We got a chance to visit with our pal Halston Harrist of H Squared Racing Engines in Houston, TX earlier in the year. Not only did he show us around the shop, but we got to hear the details of one of his latest engine builds - a 540 cubic inch big block Chevy that'll find a home in a customer's 1969 Camaro. Dyno #'s vary between dyno's. Nice BBC, but I'm a solid lifter fan & like a litte more compression.

What does it cost to build a engine like this high revving big block?

Unfortunately, the price point will fluctuate depending on the builder you use and the parts you choose to put in it. We'd guesstimate you'd be looking at $15K-$30K

I have an aluminium 540 with 11.5 comp, solid roller with 270, 285 degrees @50 with 315 cnc ported Brodix heads, sheet metal intake with twin 950 APD carbs, my combination make a little over 800 hp but at 6400 revs, power drops slightly the more I rev it, can't work out how this one's revving so far and making similar power with less cam and comp?

whats the lift on the cam, big cubes need more cam. also, what do the heads flow at higher lifts?

Sounds like high rpm for a 240+ at .050 hydraulic camshaft. What size intake port are those AFR heads?

Those heads have 325 stamped on them. Those are non or partially CNC ported 325 cc heads flowing around 340 cfm @ .600 lift on the intake unless they have extensively ported them.

Over 800 hp on a 10.5 to 1 with a relatively small hydraulic roller 540 with 325 AFRs..... having a hard time buying it.

While it’s not a particularly large camshaft it should be enough to make that number. That’s a great head with decent low lift numbers. It should also make enough vacuum for power brakes.

Actually have built a couple engines including a 454, a 540 and 565. Currently have a 565 with larger AFR heads and a larger solid roller cam and quite a bit more compression. Highly ported Edelbrock 2927 intake matched to the AFR heads. Have dynoed several engines. Also, I've seen how easy it is to fudge a dyno reading. @@moparian
