@Joseph Hacker : Lots to do & lots to check out... Here are a bunch of common needs for the Dodge Ram Gen II V-8 gassers: 9 times outta 10, a "popping" sound is caused by cylinder misfires. Almost nobody does proper preventitave maintenance, so... 1.) Start with a FULL ignition system tune-up: New distributor cap, rotor, spark plugs, & wires w/ceramic boots. Buy the correct ACCEL TST tune up kit for your engine. Those ACCEL brand kits really are the best quality bang for your buck. I believe a 1997 engine will use a different tune up kit than the 2001, so make sure you buy the correct one. Look on eBay for the best deal on one. Oh, and be sure to properly check & set the gap on EVERY spark plug before installing them. Plugs are rarely all pre-set from the manufacturer to the correct specification, and the gaps are often off by a bit, due to rough shipping & handling, etc. 2.) Replace the intake plenum gasket. The gasket gets "sucked in", and then the engine will begin using excessive engine oil, and they'll also run shitty. Many people will blame the oil consumption on the piston rings, and they're dead wrong, 99% of the time. Intake plenum gasket failures are a VERY common problem on all the older Magnum 5.2L & 5.9L V-8's. If you can afford it, buy & install a "Hughes Plenum Kit". The Hughes aftermarket repair kit really is worth every penny. 3.) If applicable, make sure your UPSTREAM (before cat) oxygen (O2) sensor is good. An upstream O2 sensor is what controls the engine's injection system's air/fuel ratio. Make sure the catalytic converter is not plugged, nor gutted. On these trucks with such basic/crude emissions controls, I believe you can get away with running a gutted or deleted cat, but certainly never a plugged-up one. Worst that typically will happen is the check engine light will stay on if catalytic converter is gutted or removed. That's because the downstream O2 is responsible for telling the ECM/PCM (computer) the status of the catalytic converter's efficiency. 4.) Make sure you have no vacuum leaks. Old vehicles are famous for vacuum leaks due to degraded/cracked/split rubber hoses, elbows, & lines. Probably should have made this #1 on the list, but vacuum leaks often lead to leaner running, boggy performance, & higher idle RPM's. (Not really what your complaint was about.) In case you wondered... Yes, I'm a professional mechanic. Yes, I own & have repaired shitloads of Dodge 2nd Gen trucks, both gas & diesel. Good luck & God bless!
