Only 20% of US military officers are academy trained. The rest are from civilian universities (ROTC, Officer Candidate Schools, or promoted from the ranks). If you hang around military people, including mid level officers, many are more liberal or left wing than you would think. Bernie Sanders was the number one choice of military people. Maybe the US needs the Carnation treatment. Tom S.
As someone who’s never going to get on Twitch - or put any effort into finding out what it even is - I only watch these videos on RU-vid... and I would really appreciate if Matt would repeat the questions out loud (to some extent) when he answers them. There’s a lot of “Oh yes, I did read that. The thing about it is, the characters. The characters aren’t fleshed out and so the ending doesn’t work” or something like that, and I have no idea what he’s referencing. I don’t know if anyone else has this problem but I figured I’d throw it out there. Otherwise I really appreciate these rants; they’ve def had an impact on my thinking process ... Thanks!
Christman is a Castellano nobleman. Hence his atypical knowledge of Portuguese history, ETA terror, the affairs of the Catalonian province, and the pronunciation of the name ‘Franco’.
The real question is, if the Mid-West is the USA's Balkans, the South is its Italy/Turkey/Mediterranean and Texas is Germany then what's the rest of Central Europe? I could see Colorado as Austria/Lichtenstein and maybe Kansas as Hungary. Not so sure about Switzerland, Poland, Slovakia or the Czech Republic though.
I can do NE: England is Massachusetts, Ireland is VT, Scotland is NH, Wales is RI, the isle of wight is Martha's vineyard. Connecticut is part of whatever NY is.
Originally 'Judge Dredd' was a parody of Dirty Harry style vigilante right wing cop porn, with death sentences for jaywalking etc. The way it grew into a nuanced and questioning series producing stories like 'America' and 'Democracy Now' was a miracle. 'Mechanismo' seems uncomfortably prescient - the robot judges displaying excess aggression because they've had their personalities modelled on Dredd.
Fringe exile provenance, lots of independence from the society, lots of strife with the locals...Massachusetts or the Western Cape is the Utah of Europe...and the whole derned cycle repeats itself.
We can't do anything for you, Matt, if you go from "Fuck Ridley Scott!" to "Why no world building?" Like, he's the guy. He's *the* guy. You could argue other aspects of his films suffer because of his focus on production design and making the space believable. Whether it's future LA, a desert road trip, Ancient Rome or 70s NYC, the world is always lived-in.
Good Palaver. Speaking of casting movies, what do you think of my Moby Dick 2022 all-star lineup? Ishmael - Matt Damon Queequeg (and Fedallah) - Keegan Michael Key Ahab - Bryan Cranston Starbuck - Leonardo DiCaprio Stubb - Will Farrell Flask - John C. Riley Pip - Jordan Peele
Typing this comment as the grand Europe-America analogy is still unfolding, so if he gets to this forgive me - but what about the Baltic States? Perhaps Idaho?
