Security engineer here, I never actually worked in a networking position directly but worked with other network engineers closely. I do have my ccna though and I would say that has helped and prepared me for my current role as a security engineer.

I can vouch for this as I was a network engineer before becoming a security engineer. All the network protocols and services are really the bedrock of all networked communication.

🎯 Decided to take a pause on cyber certs and go for the CCNA. Will sit for the exam in a few weeks. Looking back am confident it was the right move. Have learned a ton and gained a genuine / growing interest for networking. Enjoy the videos Dean. A+ as always

Can I ask you about your decision, what exactly made you switch? Lately ive been studying a ton of cybersecurity, but I realized I really enjoying networking as well. Im a student looking to break into Tech and its been tough deciding my path. Thanks and good luck on your exam!

@@RobbieFlores I have a handful of cyber certs already. Was studying for OSCP but realized for me its better to build a strong networking foundation. IMO you really need to understanding networking well for cyber and CCNA is the best opportunity to do that. I watched a few of Jeremy'sITLabs CCNA videos on RU-vid and was sold. jumped in and just really enjoyed all of it. Feel way more confident now and understand Networking (routing protocols, switching, variable length subnetting, vlans, trunking etc.) so much better and learned how to actually do their configurations. haven't sit for the exam yet. Have it scheduled here towards end of the month but so far my experience.... 10/10 recommend the course. even if you don't plan to sit for the exam.

@@user-tt2bc4cx7g Just watched Jeremy's OSI & TCP/IP and LAN Architecture videos. I get what you mean. Deep understanding of Networking is clearly essential. I decided to pursue Pen Testing last year and initially focused on learning Python and BASH first. I realize now that I probably should have focused on Networking first lol. Thanks for sharing your perspective and for the YT recommendation, it helped. Also if you haven't already, sounds like you would enjoy taking the PNPT Cert from TCM security.

@@RobbieFlores Thanks. PNPT is actually on my radar and looks interesting. maybe later this year. After CCNA i'm planning to go for a cloud cert. Most likely Azure. As for CCNA, can't say enough about Jeremy's course. Would also recommend picking up the CCNA Official Cert Guide and Boson practice exams. Both have been really great. Good luck!

Im currently a network engineer and get to work on a lot of fortinet ngfws. I completely agree with you on this video, it seems like with all of the added functionality of firewalls anymore, that this position can really prime you for a cyber / offensive security job.

I attended this college that was promoting the so-called well respected ISC2... I dropped out as I got bored. I don't trust teachers anymore. They are carrot danglers

👤 CyberSec here. A network engineer will never be able to stop, detect, or circumvent social engineering attacks. The term “Better” is probably not the right word to use. Networking skills are crucial to any tech discipline, but it doesn’t overrule or out-do all the others. Besides, most networking guys are not people-oriented, which is a major strength CyberSec folks hone over time. Sorry, but this argument only works on novices…

@@StyxShowI must say, I COMPLETELY agree with you about the fake Cyber folks out there. Don’t worry; it’s starting to catch up with them. Not being able to prevent simple hacks is becoming a real problem for people hired in certain positions. Thanks for the explanations in the video. Glad to know that someone actually “gets it”.

@@made432I shouldn’t have used the word “never”-you’re right. My point was…whatever you’re not constantly training for, most likely will not amount to someone who is honing that specific skillset. Having good people skills is not the same as making an entire organization aware & implementing security protocols based on certain social hacks. Again, no doubt it may be hard to get “you”, but network guys who don’t have the Cyber job description, are most likely not keeping specific hack prevention plans “top of mind” for the organization….

My opinion on this subject is: You can not become Great Cyber Security Engineer in Networking Field without strong fundamentals in areas of networking and how basic services are working. I have met during my career many Cyber Security Professionals, some of them having 30+ years of experience, who claims that fundamentals are always crucial, in pentest, security and network engineering and also it will be a valid knowledge in monitoring, vulnerability assessment. I can not imagine how Cisco PSIRT team is mitigating advanced issues in their Cisco products without having good knowledge how network protocols are working in details, especially having in mind that Cisco is networking company, which created first router for enterprise networking. So definitely yes, network knowledge is a key in life of IT/ICT engineers and Cyber Security Professionals !

This is from someone who graduated in a network engineering program and is currently a CISO.. I just disagree with the last part as network engineers also need to know programming(especially), windows server configs(not only linux/unix), legal, risk mngmt, IT gov, QA, ESM, SDLC, cloud, BCM to be a great cybersecurity professional..but yeah learning linux is good enough for entry level cyber. While I agree that it is nearly impossible for cyber people to be network people, it is not easy being in cybersecurity due to how many roles you become accountable to. Easy to get in, hard to master.

Cybersecurity is broad. Network is highly integrated with Security but there are parts of cybersecurity that are not network focus.

This doesnt apply to all. Many companies provision and maintain applications. They secure applications directly, not much networks - PaaS, SaaS, FaaS.

How do you provision and gain access to apps in companies? Is it not over a network? Those apps MUST, and I repeat MUST pass through some servers, switches and routers, right? In addition, literally all cloud service providers that provide services like paas, saas, etc literally provide those services over a network. Who designs, and implements that? The network engineer job role will never go out of fashion. Somebody will always have to be there to lay those Ethernet cables, crimp them properly, install and configure those switches, routers and access points, configure vlans, routing, ACLs etc Networking is like plumbing, it will forever be relevant and needed.

@@aminubello234these guys don't get it, they hear the word cloud and they assume that it's a magical entity and doesn't have to travel through a network... Cloud engineering starts with a network connection... Networking will always be needed... It's the roads that cars drive on... Even if you have AI automated cars they still need to drive on roads and people still need to maintain those roads and build new ones

Not even close 🤣, technology is moving so fast that networks can't keep up, I'm a network engineer working directly for the government and the amount of backlog work I have is ridiculous. Networks are constantly growing and evolving and they need physical labor to be installed as well as architecture knowledge to implement and deploy. There's no way network engineer jobs will disappear. Untouchable by AI as well. The backbone will always be the backbone
