Well a beautiful weather window was bestowed upon us last week. I ventured off the beach and mixed up jigging the new Mackinaw shads and slipped some crabs down into a few holes. Weakfish patrolled the perimeter and we put a beating on em. The bottom sweepers cleaned up on the other tautogs around.
I prepped the tog with a mushroom cream sauce the following way:
Cut tog into portions. Fry in butter/oil with flour + salt + garlic+ pepper.
Sautee garlic + chopped sage for a few minutes. Add chopped Portobello mushrooms. Add half cup of heavy cream reduce, add some green onions and a drop of flour to thicken.
Enjoy!

Incredible videos, Thank You very much for all your efforts! Living way up here in Seward Alaska, it's nice to see someone from the southern part of the lower 48 doing what I did growing up in south Louisiana, which is catching all sorts of coastal saltwater fish, and being a remote bush Chef/Cook, I especially enjoy the cooking you do! Nice work Elias. I've caught multiple Tog of similar coloration in CT waters (LIS) but could not pinpoint the basis. I say that since for the same spot I've caught completely different coloration...different group recently migrated? water chemistry? Who knows. Thanks for backing me up on ignoring a quality beer during 'low carb' meal approach? It's allowed and negligible since you drank it with your other hand. Well Done Sir!

i've heard from alot of hardcore tog fisherman that the yellowish rust color on a tog means it comes off of a metal type structure. Maybe a sunken ship of something of the sort, i've caught a couple tog with that coloration and i was fishing near some metal structure.

So how is the Epixor doing? The last comment I remember was something about the drag was getting sticky. I watched Nick's review and I bought the 55 size. 65 bucks off Walmart.com. Mine was butter smooth out of the box. Thinking about changing the drag washers out with carbon.

I have caught golden tog both in Long Island Sound and off the Jersey coast. Caught red and orange tog too. Not sure if one can say it has to do with structure as they move seasonally. I don't believe it is from rubbing on rust as someone suggested, the coloration appears to be skin pigment. Probably just genetic color variants that are persisting.

Elias, Nice Black fish! , You probably already know this one. They are one of the slowest growing fish in the Atlantic Ocean. I'm guessing that tautog you caught was around 20-25 years old. On the flip side yum! 👀

I used to fish LIS. I have never ever seen a blackfish of that coloration. It seems almost impossible. I wonder if this is some adaptation to the extreme southern range of the species? Per your comment, maybe they spend more time over a sandy type bottom?

I’ve been catching SE NC togs for the last 8 years. All males in these area are light with golden highlights. The females are a lot darker. I don’t think it has much to do with immediate habitat as there is no difference in fish coming from sandy ledges or wrecks. It is definitely pre spawn time for them here in NC and, I think, the colors are especially bright because of that. Females will bite better once spawned out later this spring, but bu then (April - May) there’s so much other fish around there’s hardly any tog fishing. Great work on your videos!
@EliasVFishing
@EliasVFishing 5 лет назад
Nick Maraveyias Thanks for that info. Def makes sense it can be specific to this particular strain. And I agree come April and May doubtful I’ll target them either. But gosh it’s really nice to have a fishery like this in the winter. What’s the biggest tog you’ve seen out of the SE portion of the state?

As to the color of Tautogs. Different colorization of fish usually comes down to a few factors- Food it is eating and/or mating colors. Doubt very seriously it has anything to do with rubbing on rusty metal.
