The Volkswagen Polo-based T-Cross is the brand’s third new SUV in the last two years and completes a family line up of no less than five models in total. VW, you might rightly conclude, is fully committed to the SUV, both now and in the future with a variety of drivetrains that will include a full EV model within the next 18 months.

Unlike people who would hate on all SUVs, this looks rather fantastic. Why is it so hard for people to understand that this is so much more practical and roomy compared to the Polo?

As usual, the haters with crappy comments appear like a Spring rain. I'm 61, dodgy back but not tooooo bad. I currently have a Polo which at times is hard to get into. No....I'm not a fat old man (although I'm trying hard)....I walk 8+miles a day...play lots of golf....even do my sit-ups and pushups and stretch a bit. The Polo is just a pain at times to get into. Our next car will be easier to get in. This car looks like it would do the job. We don't need a full sized SUV.....we just don't need it. So....you haters out there....why shouldn't I buy something that works for me? And......horrors.....it will likely be an automatic because I'm just fed up with changing gears all the time.

@ F Hicks, you're doing well, I'm 55 and switched to Auto 15 years ago, yet I have a friend older than me that bought an Auto and converted it to manual. Not for me, Auto in rush our traffic is just so relaxing, especially in my MB W124 where the gearbox holds the car on a hill.

Great review. I'm sick of these car reviews that have this fanatical hatred of small SUVs. They are great, especially for elderly or disabled people that need that little bit of extra height to get in and out of the car.

Sliding rear seat is very practical. Should recline too when there is no luggage.

Richard Melchers catch up dude, no companies use the word hatchback any longer. It has gone the way of the station wagon. That’s why they use SUV and crossover. Do you call an SUV a big hatchback?

james In Bradford it’s not a high riding car by any standard. How high does one want to drive? I say get a tractor if you want to sit high . I get this over a polo for space and practicality but don’t get it over the golf. Ridiculous car (not just VW though of course!)

I got my Suzuki Vitara so my elderly parents could get in and out by themselves, I previously had a Hyundai i10 and both needed help especially getting out.

why not save a few quid and get a SEAT Arona, it's the exact same car, and has the option for a 150PS 1.5 TSI, and also where does the T-Roc sit now, as the tiguan is supposed to be golf sized, and now this polo sized one, VW has lost the plot on their lifted hatches.

the arona rides really harsh, just like the ibiza, my friend got one, my old 13 fiesta rides so much better, the vw is supposed to have better comfort, with a DSG and TDI it will be perfect for me ... until i try it, can't decide to ditch the fiesta for one of these or for another fiesta, the new ford styling is a bit iffy
