The signature phrase "Blackpink in your area" is an announcement of their presence, influence and power... It's sassy and full of attitude, sorta like "step aside bitches, we have arrived! Blackpink is on the scene!" It also reinforces the idea that Blackpink has been pushing the boundaries of kpop, they're not just big in South Korea but have now become massive global sensations... They're currently on the "Encore" round of their second world tour!

*HOW YOU LIKE THAT* is about coming back from a dark place stronger than before. There are many Greek references in the video, a few examples are: The winged statue in the temple represents Nike, Goddess of Victory. Rosé (silver hair), in the beginning, is portraying Persephone, Goddess of Vegetation (plants, flowers) and the daughter of Zeus. One day while she was out gathering flowers, Hades, God of the Underworld, abducted her and dragged her down to the Underworld where she was forced to become his wife. The video shows her in her beautiful image, surrounded by flowers, as well as how she became, dirty and grey, staring up at the world through a hole in the Underworld. She was eventually allowed to return to the surface for part of the year, which is why we have Spring and Summer. Jennie (maroon dress) under the umbrellas is surrounded by dancers, their hands are "spiders", crawling over her face. Directly after this, under the burning umbrellas (they're rotating too, by the way), Jisoo is seated in a chair that is spiderlike in its design. The Trojan Horses at the end are a message from BLACKPINK to the world. They symbolize the fact that BLACKPINK, like the Greeks, will emerge and take over the global music world. If you look at the last scene you will notice that on the inside of the dome it looks like there's an organic growth over parts of the ceiling. It's actually a map of the world that the group is going to dominate.

Wow! That’s very insightful. I caught a few of the Greek mythology references but your explanation is very thorough.

Well those are references to the MV, not to the song. It is true that Blackpink is dominating the world, because his numbers show it, but the song, at the beginning, shows what one is missing for having left a girl because they are all wonderful and you lose a lot if you leave them. At the end of the song they talk about themselves, "look at the sky, is it a bird is it a plane? Blackpink!!"
@NoelMcGinnis
@NoelMcGinnis 11 месяцев назад
It wasn’t actually bird imagery, that was the representation of Nike, the goddess of victory that had the wings behind them. Obvious what she represented here.

Also, for those who don't know, Look up in the sky, it's a bird, it's a plane, comes from the 1950's Superman tv show. Of course, Bird - Plane: Blackpink

Not only Blackpink, every K-Pop group, male or female are incredible in their singing and dancing. Unlike American artists, Koreans are trained. They'll be trainees for companies before they could be selected/debut. That's why their performances are always perfect. Not to mention choreography, production, wardrobe, etc.

(1) "BP in your area" = their signature phrase. (2) In my opinion, this song is one of their "Black" songs, i.e, confident, defiant, girl power, etc, which the vast majority of their songs are. The "Pink" songs are very few, most are of the vibe of vulnerability, introspection, etc. In these songs, the instrumental music tends to be toned down quite a bit. They tend use these songs to demonstrate their vocal prowess and their ability to express feelings through their voices. They include (1) 'Stay', (2) "Don't Know What To Do', 'Hope Not', 'You Never Know' (very very much personal to them), and 'Happiest Girl' (heart piecing). And, in my opinion, the following two are both "Black" and "Pink": (1) 'Love Sick Girls' (the title song of their 1st full-length album 'The Album' in 2020) and (2) "Hard to Love". And there are "odd-ball pink'' 'Ice Scream' (soft, fun and quite naughty) and "odd-ball black" 'Crazy Over You'. These young ladies are very versatile.

It is a tag line along with just blurting out Blackpink in some songs. But Blackpink in your area has an obvious meaning if you are in deed an English speaker. If you think it has no meaning, then you need to go back and punch all of your English teachers as you're embarassing yourself.

There are many opinions about which song is Black and which song is Pink. The most accepted by the Blinks, is that it depends on the lyrics and the meaning of each song, not by its music. So the black songs are the ones that show empowerment and overcoming the vicissitudes of love. Some are slow and others lively: "The hapiest girl", "Typa Girl", "How you like that", "Hard to love", "Solo", etc... The Pink songs talk about love and illusion: "Stay", "Lovesick girls", "Gone", "As if it's your last", etc...

"How You Like That" was my introduction to BlackPink and to Kpop in general. As someone who, in my younger days, lived in S. Korea, Japan, and the Philippines, I was struck by their brash, in-your-face manner, and, as I looked into it, I became a fan of, not just them, but other groups/solo artists as well. Korea, as a country, is very conservative, so Kpop is an accepted anomaly - it's popular, but there are very strict rules that they are supposed to live by. For instance, they're not allowed to date. Jisoo (the one in the red dress with the burning umbrellas) just shocked the Kpop scene because she announced that she is dating. She's 29 years old. Kpop is one of the few catalysts for social change in Korea - intended or not - due to the lyrical content of many of their songs, and behavior (both on and off stage) that challenges societal norms. This is why I'm so fascinated by it. Great reaction, and it's nice to see others who aren't in their teens/20's recognizing the talent and excellence of all of these young artists.

Very good description of Korean culture. It is a sample of the revolution that Blackpink is moving, not only in Korea, but throughout the world. women must lose their fears and dare to stand out in all facets of life.

I know that people have commented about BLACK and PINK songs but many of them are newer BLINKS and I wanted to clarify things for you. Here's the actual meaning of "BLACK" songs and "PINK" songs: First off, according to their company when the group debuted in 2016, "The meaning of BLACKPINK aims to contradict the common perception of the color pink. Pink is commonly used to portray prettiness, but BLACKPINK actually means to say that 'Pretty isn't everything'. It also symbolizes that they are a team that encompasses not only beauty, but also great talent." That's the basis for the group. Now that we know that: The group debuted on August 8, 2016 with two songs, BOOMBAYAH and WHISTLE. Both were huge hits. Two months later on October 31, 2016 they had their first comeback with PLAYING WITH FIRE and STAY. After that they kind of disappeared from the public eye except for award shows. It wasn't until June 22nd, 2017 that they appeared again with one song, an upbeat bop called AS IF IT'S YOUR LAST. One hour before the music video dropped on RU-vid the group had a "Live Countdown Show" where they talked about the video and how excited they were. Jennie (the first singer in the blue scene in the video that you watched) tried to describe the song without giving away spoilers. She said "We were nervous about releasing this song because it was different from our previous songs." She awkwardly was trying to come up with a way to describe it and said "It's more of a ....pink song than the others, it was uncomfortable filming it because we had to smile and in previous videos the CEO told us to look fiercely into the camera." Fans took that comment and ran with it, categorizing every song as either "Black" or "Pink". Neither the group nor their company had created the labels, fans did it on their own, and in reality it's a mess because everyone uses their personal taste to call it one or the other. So in closing the only song that the group actually named by color is AS IF ITS YOUR LAST. ...so take the "BLACK" and "PINK" definition with a grain of salt. If the story has more of a swag or dark feel you can call it BLACK, more upbeat songs you can call PINK (or not!) In my opinion the only songs that are really "PINK" are AS IF IT'S YOUR LAST and ICE CREAM, maybe BOOMBAYAH, DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITHOUT YOU and FOREVER YOUNG.

a very interesting curiosity is that blackpink does not use green screen in their MV'S. I think it would be cool if you reacted to some of the girls' live performances, in April of that year they performed again at Coachella and the official blackpink channel has performances of "Pretty Savage" "Shut Down" and "Typa Girl". but it's just a tip, don't feel pressured to react to it. ❤

I enjoy all your BLACKPINK reactions. I suggest you check out another 4 member female K-pop group called 2NE1. They were one of the most popular groups around 2010-2015. They have light and dark theme songs as well. Their debut song "Fire" and their most popular song "I Am The Best" are on the light happy side. "I Hate You" and "Ugly" are on the dark somber side. CL, Mimzy, Park Bom and Sandara have also released solo singles. All their videos and live stage performances are great. My favorites are 4 member female groups because it's easier to remember their names. 2NE1 is my favorite K-pop group. Looking forward to your next reactions.

HYLT is great... it starts out fooling you into thinking this is a sad "pink" song and the girls are about to get all emotional on you, then you get kicked in the face when the beat drops and it turns out to be a "black" song about not only getting over that relationship but making that person regret their life choices.

I feel compelled to point out that as a person who has been following and studying Kpop since 1998, Kpop has no feminist agenda whatsoever. One has to examine the entire "girl crush" concept or the "girl power" vibe embraced by Kpop girl groups in the whole Asian pop culture context: back in the 80s and 90s when Japanese pop reigned supreme in Asia, Japanese girl groups and female solo artists almost without exception embraced the "cute" "bubblegum" and "girly" style, and over time audience around the East Asian region began to feel bored and a little fed up, which explains why Kpop girl groups were able to take Asian audience by storm and quickly replaced the Japanese in popularity over the past decade because they are simply refreshing and totally different. Yes, Blackpink and many other Kpop girl groups' songs may sound empowering for women from the Western perspective, but I cannot stress enough that Kpop has never been intended as a vehicle to promote feminism or any other so-called "progressive ideology' like the way Hollywood has been. Therefore, I think it is important to avoid trying to fit Kpop into the Western feminist narrative. Simply put, Kpop isn't intended to be "woke" whatsoever.
@kai_masters

@mikkj1

It doesn't matter if it's intended. I'm pretty sure that BP intends to promote female empowerment. I think that "Tally" couldn't be more direct, plus many of their songs highlight women making the first move and others talk about taking charge of a relationship and/or getting out of a toxic one. Off the top of my head, (G)Idle with "Tomboy" is pretty direct as well.

@alanlee8590
@alanlee8590 11 месяцев назад
@@iamguava Really? Its always easy to criticize, but can you come up with your own analysis? Or are u just too dumb to do that? And if u r just some newbies to Kpop, take a hike. Go check out Baby V.O.X's 2001 album "Boyish", in which you can also find "girl power" theme. If I was outdated now, then I probably would have been outdated 20 years ago. Don't lecture me just because you think you know Kpop, I bet u don't know shit about it until quite recently.
@alanlee8590
@alanlee8590 11 месяцев назад
@@mikkj1 Yeah u might be right. But make no mistake, female empowerment in East Asian context is about truly "empowering" women in a postive way, rather than some "we don't need no men" or "men are trash" BS. We don't demonize or trash men here in Asia like the ultra American feminists do. and we don't appreciate woke trash like "Barbie" here either. It DOES matter whether it is intended or not, because if you are purposefully spreading certain types of ideas through pop culture, that becomes propaganda, not entertainment. Hollywood does that systematically, Kpop doesn.t. I m indeed sick and tired of how the American showbiz systematically uses its platform and global influence to advance its "progressive" agenda and spread woke garbage to the rest of the world, and believes its counterparts around the world are following suit and doing the same "stylish" thing. This is nonsense. Pop music should be about entertaining, not brainwashing. The fact that the Americans are obsessed about doing that doesn't necessarily mean everybody else in the world is too.
