Completely agree. There is no comparison between the two. You just can't compare a big turbo 4 pot to 3 litre straight 6. Never in a million years. And looks awful too the new 1 series. The only one I've seen that looks half decent is the Motech editions of the M135i. Bring back the old for me.
People are just wanting to hate this! Go see one in person and I promise it will change your opinion! Bmw say 80% of people don’t know it’s RWD and to be fair I’d believe that. Mines ordered, can’t wait
I think the reason they’ve gone front wheel drive and 4 pot is because the engine and running gear is also being used in the new JCW clubman. Makes sense to put one running gear in both, rather than designing for both.
That's one reason, the other is down to packaging and interior space. It's greatly improved over the previous models and brings it into line with it's direct competitors; the F20 gen had about the same sized cabin (especially in the rear) as a Polo.
I remember reading up on a top gear mag about them speaking to someone from BMW and one of the questions was why make it FWD. I can't remember exactly but I think he said some of the other models (correct me if I'm wrong) cane with FWD and people didn't complain.
@Chris R most customers these days don't know how to drive... I can see that everyday... not to go in far in essence.... they probably don't even understand how mechanics work, like manual transmission. But if you can't recognize in 10-15km what wheels are driven... You maybe shouldn't even drive. Okay if you are noobie to driving came out of driving school I understand you can't recognize what wheels are powered, but if you drive for 4 years and you can't recognize driven wheels in car....damn either manufacturer made horrible car, or you really don't care about driving or something. Also they get rid of ZF 8 speed now it's made by Aisin and it isn't same unit... it's slower... Whole car is disappointment in some way. If I want FWD BMW I would get small nimble MINI and that is how they should keep it. So, should BMW done it?. NO, period. But they did. And you can always go for sporty Focus... it would handle the same now if not better. Ford is doing proper FWD cars now for decades.
There has been a rumour that the M135i isn’t the successor the M140i, its been said that there is a hybrid M135i prob M140 or M145 with hybrid electric in the works... might just give the model the boost it needs... but personally I’m glad I have the M2... 👍🏻
It will be compared to the M140 and will struggle in areas but cars like the M140 are quickly becoming a thing of the past with EU regulations. It’s better to compare with other similar offerings available new.
When Porsche chopped the flat 6 out of the Cayman and put a 4 pot in they got slated. This should be no different. The world did not need another pseudo four wheel drive 4 banger hot hatch, it really didn't. There is nothing special about it anymore, it's a better car for most plebs buying it but for the enthusiasts the magic is gone.
I think the problem is the f20/21 was very unique compared to the competitors RWD 6pot. Now it’s not unique.... at all! it now sits inline with Audi / VW and Mercedes. Shame... f20/21 was a special little car
Joe Hince Is this going to be a heated thing? Like most people on RU-vid who can’t handle an opinion of any other individual than themselves! I prefer the 140. End of. Oh but the rear of the 135 looks 👌🏼 but those front grills are too over powering.
No No No BMW then I’m biased because my son owns an 1987 E28 rear wheel drive six pot great review Jon but I hate the direction BMW are going I feel the passion is dying 🤔
I’ve said in other discussions about the new one; I’m sure it’ll be very capable, sell massive amounts and be a success for BMW, but I would have one if you paid me. It’s gopping. If you cover the front end in pictures it looks like every other jacked up mini suv-thing on the market.
With the those lights the backend looks a ickle bit like a 3 series estate, still nice mind :) The interior is a massive step up. Just a shame to see them moving away from RWD, it just makes the car the same as any other euro box with an over-boosted 4 cylinder engine.
Do you know thumbs up great great raw review. Wasn’t sure about the start up noise with neighbours but you’ve convinced me to buy after a test drive thanks 👍
I was lucky enough to pick up a low mileage 13 135i over here in the USA and the main thing that impressed me was the power train. To me a BMW that is a performance model, even if it's not an all out M car, absolutely has to have a straight six. It's part of the brands identity. I'd have less of a problem with this car if it was just rear wheel drive but it's essentially a jacked up Mini. If I wanted a reasonable hot hatch that was a 4cyl awd, I would buy a Golf R. If I buy a BMW I want a six cylinder engine and preferrably rear wheel drive. If you have an M140, especially with the B58 and you trade it for one of these you'd have to be out of your mind. No other hot hatch is offered with rwd and a such a wonderful engine. You'd be trading in something unique for something that's just like all the others. Don't do it you'll regret it.
I don't understand people's obsession with awd, after driving X-drive cars and then rear drive I'd never go out of my way to get one. Especially considering how good BMW's traction/stability control are. Winter tires with rear drive is not only better than awd with no-season tires but also more fun.
If BMW want to comply with all these emmisions then why didnt they go 5 cylinder? I think that would of been a good compromise. BMW could of said to the emmision boffins “ we have taken away 1 cylinder now thats all your going to get” 😎👊🏻✈️
How is he saying that there is no fake exhaust being played through the speakers when it's so obviously clear. BMW are very well known for playing fake exhaust sounds through the speakers.
wasnt clear to me.. but either way I wasnt saying there was no fake exhaust note.. I was just asking if Lew was sure because I wasnt sort of aware of it... Id rather a car didnt do that :) does the M140 do it btw??
@@ForensicDetailing As I know this fake sound is on some modern sports cars with 4 or 3 pots and some electric cars. I think a 6 pot don't need that. But in a review of a sporty Peugeot car they complained that the pitch of engine rpm and fake exhaust don't match😅
I've tried beer, gin, whiskey, going boss eyed and looking through thick ass glasses and no....that front grille still looks like shit. The incredible b58 is too much to lose imo.
Good video but nothing has made me change my mind about changing my 140i, my next car will be the M2. All BMW have done with the top spec 1 series is numb it down to please the majority most of whom will be family drivers, with the ability to have some fun in a safer way.
@@Lew-tronic I agree, I suppose the point I was trying to make was that the new 1 series isn't necessarily a better car but anything that can do a 0-60 in less than 5s is clearly quick. I love the big smiles my 140i brings me every time I get in her and fire up the wonderful B58 engine. Sadly my car has the dreadful PPF which numbs the exhaust down, but I will get a Remus system put on her by Motech early next year, can't wait!!!!
Just finished EVO’s review and it states the 135i uses the ZF 8 speed. Lesser engine/gearbox combos are lifted from Mini but based on our Mini and 140i ownership I think the standard cars will be the better options as they are better at being an everyday car compared to the old 1 series
Correct Phil Lee. Just found some info stating the new 8 speed is from Aisin? Spelling may be wrong. Just proves you can’t believe everything on the internet. I’m in a new 3 series so still ZF I think
I think if you didnt have its predessor in the m140i being as good a car as it is then you would probably rate this new version higher and so its probably best ro put this up against its new competitors ie s3, a35, Golf R. But the honest answer is i would certainly not return my m140i for this new version !
Alcantara is on the way out after 3 years? Is he talking about Tesla or Ford Alcantara? ;) I would not buy any modern BMW even though I had been born in to a BMW household... the front ends look so uninspired and brash and exchangeable for a long time now, they have embarked on the same unfortunate road Audi did... and even Audi management could not stand their bland, brash front grills anymore!
Looks dreadful. Looks like a Ford Focus and a Hyundai i30 had a love child. Old 140 looks like a BMW. And lets be honest, a performance BMW with 4 cylinders? Really? Also, sounds like fake exhaust audio is being played into the car.
Kenny G Agree completely, definitely a touch of the focus in it. There’s literally nothing I like about that car at all. Body Styling horrible, interior looks so confused, what we’re they thinking? They’ve really dropped the ball with this one imo.
I love the look of the new m135i been looking at them this past two weeks, I'm thinking of waiting till the next reg change tho incase they bring some type of facelift or m140i as bmw do. Saw a nice red one at the dealership, and a grey one with the orange/red leather interior I like the interior but would want a red car but together the red and red/orange leather would look weird. Would have to be the blue with the red/orange leather interior 👌🏼
No matter how positively i try to look at this car as an m140i owner i can't help but feel underwhelmed and i guess that's in itself marks the car in my mind as a bit of a failure. It offers nothing over its competitors that they havent already done, and are better at doing... so i always find myself asking, whats the point of this car ? Id rather get the better interior of the Mercedes...i hope there will be a m140i variant of this.
I Acc really like the car, the side profile and rear is just 🤩🤤. The front whilst kinda ugly, still makes the car very much a head turner, cause it looks so aggressive and mean. It really does stand out 🔥
I’ve never experienced a really fast car I had a 2020 c220d would you say that you’d feel a massive difference between them because I have no clue what to expect as I’m too young to test drive
I think BMW are loosing the plot with the looks of there cars the new 1 series is nowhere near as nice looking as the old one and the new gigantic grills there putting on there cars are awful especially the 7 series grill and the X5
Love the vid, but never owned a Beemer and not a good experience with a loaner, M sport 520 I think. Maybe it’s because I am even more of a crusty old git than you are. Still love cars but not adventurous anymore.
yer that stood out as a bit wierd like they are holding it back.. do you know if thats actually correct? may it had tyre change but it was new demo car i think.
BMW gone down the generic eurobox styling route I see. Really can't get excited by it, artificial exhaust noise the nail in the coffin. BMW used to be leaders in engineering and have their own styling, now they are playing catch up in all respects.
@@ForensicDetailing I believe it is. Jon, I finnished today my course at AutoGlym and it was very good. I spoke about you to the instructor, about your very good review about AutoGlym hard wax and he did see that video. We actually used that wax today. Very good wax. Im heading to Poland tomorrow to do a car detailing course there. Its Monday to Friday. Regards mate
@@Lew-tronic I think the interior is a huge step forward which is a big plus point. In bad weather car will be much more planted on the road. This is a positive for a the greasy dirty and in winter icy back roads I travel on. Lastly I actually prefer the styling with perhaps the exception of the front grill. I will miss the engine in the M140 but am blessed to have an E46 M3 for the straight six noise and feel.
Looks very generic... nice but generic. Like an Audi/VW hatch etc. 4wd was probably needed to "keep up" with tech for Focus RS, Golf R, Audi S series etc. Likely it would have been slower than a WRX if it wasn't. Seems OK, just generic. Nothing special compared to the market.
Not really for me. Average power output, similar to the S3's, Golf R's etc. Not even close to the new 2.0T A45 with 420bhp, or even the previous ones with 375bhp.
new one is just wrong , its lost all the things that made the old versions great in line , gone rwd gone subtle styling gone two cylinders ,,, missing its just trying too hard to be a Honda , Honda are great at being Honda , just leave them to it.
But muh rwd and 6 cylinders, ok get an m240i. But muh practicality, there are plenty of run out f3x 340s available and the new one is already heavily discounted. So many negative comments from people who probably haven't even driven it. I have, and its a far better all round car than its predecessor. I suggest others do the same and form their own opinion before subscribing to groupthink.
You obviously know what you like... not! It's like saying to somebody who loves Marmite to like this all new Marmite, it doesn't taste anything like the old one but it's called Marmite so you need to like it.
Stuart Miller not correct, the comments are from people who liked something different from your boring golf r or s3. The older gen 1 series was a 6pot rwd in a hatchback, the smaller wheel base made if rather fun the drive. Not to mention the new one series it actually a down grade from the older 140i in every way apart from rear leg room and stopping distance
I've just been accused of 'not knowing what I like' and told what car I drive (news to me). Weird how people get so passionate about defending a choice they don't have to make in order to keep the car they prefer. 😁
@@stuartmiller7419 I have been accused of being afraid of change (I manage change at work). How come it is ok for you to generalise while it is not ok for me to relate to your comment?
@@minio4444 I didn't accuse you, personally or directly, of anything. You decided to take that mantle on board yourself. You also chose to accuse me, personally and directly, of 'not knowing what I like', not that that even makes sense. Are you the only poster here? No. How come it's OK for you to accuse me - directly - of something, though? You need to understand the difference between 'I have accused you of XYZ' and 'There are people below who clearly exhibit signs of XYZ'? Finally, generalisations only work if you accuse everyone of something, which I didn't do. P.S. We ALL 'manage change at work'. WTF has that 'boast' got to do with your illogical conclusions, or you being precious about a comment in relation to the behaviour of some people over the upgrade to a car model (which you are at pains to distance yourself from)?
