I worked for Starbucks for years and despite running the cleanest stores and having the highest customer satisfaction in the region they fired me in retaliation for complaining about one of my superiors who was very bad at his job and sexually harassed teenage girls. They reported my social medias, waived my built up vacation I couldn't take because I always worked OT, and turned away MY regular customers when they asked for me. This intro was cathartic and I hope more people turn to better and more ethical coffee companies. P.S. for being so "woke" and "progressive" Starbucks seems to keep having a slave labor problem on a lot of their plantations especially in Brazil...what a weird world

if you do this kind of glue-up id really recommend doing it with a jig. Its the way we tend to do it with violins and guitars, that also have bend sides with mitered joints. with a miter joint between bent sides like this even a slight change in temperature/moisture can result in an inferior fit of the joint surfaces. Having a jig for the clamp-up you can probably reduce rejects by a lot.
@lokithecat7225
@lokithecat7225 2 года назад
Or pre bend it, like they do with the chairs. If the wood has a bend in it, then you have removed all stress from forcing a bend.
@TheVergile
@TheVergile 2 года назад
@@lokithecat7225 oh no, you misunderstand. this has to be pre-bent either way. Cold bending it during the glue up is a bad idea and rarely ever done in woodworking unless you want to pre-stress a part on purpose. But if you bend a part it will slowly loose some of that bent over the next few minutes/hour. So for complex bends you either have to let the part cool/destress in a mould or bend it multiple times. But since bending literally means compressing/stretching fibers it also leads to uneven behaviour when its changing its moisture content and temperature. Thus even if you prebend a part perfectly and it is stable it will change its shape if you cant perfectly control the conditions. And since most wood glues are in aqueous solution or dispersion the act of glueing alone introduces a change in moisture. with a miter joint even a small change in curvature or position can reduce the overall strength due to the geometry. So when building musical instruments most of us tend to do the glue up in a jig that ensures proper positioning and registration. It also helps with clamping curved surfaces (which can suck with traditional clamps). For reference: the bending of instrument sides per hand can take a day or two of work. So you really want to make sure you dont screw up during the glue up. Especially if your wood is matched.
@TheVergile
@TheVergile 2 года назад
@@lokithecat7225 either way you need to clamp if you use most wood glues for proper adhesion. If you put force on a bent surface it causes flex. so even if your bending was unrealistically stable you would still want a jig so your clamping force can be perpendicular to the surface at all clamping points. Which would be impossible to do without a jig.
@lokithecat7225
@lokithecat7225 2 года назад
Nod... Just seemed like they were using straight wood, and forcing the curve through the... die? mold? setup they constructed, which led to the wood tearing. The system they used for bending the chair... backing? in a previous video seemed like it would reduce the stresses. Not sure how feasible it would end up being long term, if even a "Properly bent" piece is still unstable with temperature / humidity shift though... Maybe some sort of Varnish / Sealant might be necessary, in addition to curing the formed piece. Feels like a lot of work for a part that shouldn't cost all that much, especially since you intend to be throwing (light) objects at the parts under stress.

A while ago you guys showed a prototype-version of gluing the "S"-bend for the back of some chairs. Couldn't you do something like this for the curved-tray-walls? If they are already bend before final assembly, popping should be much less of an issue. Though I could see some issues arising due to added complexity and production time. Greetings from Germany -Nik

If I remember rightly, the chair backs were several strips of wood laminated together and didn't involve a mitre joint. Though, I had the same initial thought, I think this is an different issue.

I had this cool idea for a module that holds guide books like Monster Manual and rulebooks off to the side so that if there's a question about some action that needs a ruling, the source material's handy at the table. I have the image of it in my head. The sad thing is that Starbucks is one of the best places in Taunton to get coffee; I was loyal to Dunkin Donuts for many, many years, until I realized that most workers there don't GAF about how they make the coffee, so it ends up being essentially burnt, greasy brown water. Starbucks is more expensive, true, and their source material is essentially the same as Dunkin, but the employees that make the coffee at Starbucks actually seem to give a damn, so the end product is typically superior. That having been said, Dunkin has Starbucks beat when it comes to the non-coffee products like the pastries and sandwiches.

I'm curious how a book cubby that hooks onto the table via the magnetic rails would work between weight and leverage.
@LabTech41
@LabTech41 2 года назад
@@jameswest6232 Well, I'm not sure if the design I have in my head would work on the inner rails of the table, but mine would essentially work on the outside rail. Just think of a box that looks like one of those manila envelopes, with a little tab that allows it to hang from the rail. It'd be pretty tight in against the table, so most of the weight would be straight down, which I believe would be pretty secure on the basic design of the modules. Given the weights I've seen them take, it shouldn't be too problematic. It wouldn't be a bookshelf, because that'd be totally impractical, but for 2-3 manuals it'd get the job done. I'm trying to keep it simple, because more complexity would just mean more pain.

How about using a Wyrmwood logo shaped rod with tongue & groove joints on the sides to put these curved sides into, with the logo jutting out into the tray? An additional groove could then be cut into the bottom of the tree logo for an optional tray divider that splits it down the middle as well. These Wyrmwood shield shaped pegs/ rods could be used in a variety of ways in other projects or even just sliced off and used as inserts or inlays when a peg is not needed. The rods could even we worked into pens, slide rods for a gaming screen, or many other things.

What about carving an L-shaped piece and gluing that onto the tray? All of the benefits and none of the weaknesses. You can get dozens of L-shaped out of the same piece of wood by carving them side-by-side. And, if it overlaps the other sides, it'll look absolutely gorgeous. You could even get fancy with the carving . You could chamfer the corner and put your logo on really predominantly. Maybe having a more dynamic edge on the inside. If it's a really thick border you could even carve a groove in the top for holding dice. But all that might be a bit overboard. Simplicity is key.

Why not glue on thicker sides that are straight and then mill the curve out of those? Then you don't have the problems of removing too much material, you don't have to worry about springy wood and the joint will be covered up by the rolling surface (leather I assume) anyways. The only challenge that remains is lining it up consistently for the CNC but that's easy enough.

The stuff on the table or things I don't really want to be interacting with unless I'm moving a mini. But the the dice on the dining tray or something that I'm constantly interacting with. Having it slightly elevated makes me feel closer to me and separated from the table. Sorry I'm thinking way too deep about the philosophy of this.
