With the softer types of headlight kit, it's usually not necessary to remove the old and apply new headlight sealant. Normally there's more then enough sealing inside the channel of the headlight to close up properly again after baking the headlight open. In some cases it is necessary, for example with headlights that use a permanent kit (permaseal) which doesn't get soft when heated. This material is perfect for the job.
Applying this sealant is easy. Apply the strip in the channel of the headlight housing. At room temperature it's soft and can be stretched easily to reach the thickness you need. Push lens back on to the housing, and heat the headlight again in an oven to soften the kit. Squeeze the lens on the housing and make sure that any excisting clips are snapped back into place. Watch our video for applying instructions.
It's a roll of 9,5mm wide and 4,5 meters long. That's more than enough to seal 2 headlights back up against moisture.

I just retrofitted lights in my '11 ram. that had permaseal. Put the lights in the oven at 275F for 10 minutes, then used a flat blade to seperate the seal. threw them back in for another 5 minutes and I was able to pull the lens off. To get the permaseal out of the seal chamber I put the housing backs in for 7 minutes, then used the screw driver to scrape all the permaseal out. All in all it was about 30 minutes per light total.

Is there a video that tells u how warm is the oven?

Thanks for the video. I recently purchased some of that sealant. Hopefully a new seal will stop water getting into my headlights and killing my ballasts! My headlights are rather large and won't fit in my oven and unfortunately I don't have a heat gun either. Will a hairdryer suffice?

I used a heat gun and worked around it, digging out the old glue with a flat head.. It's hard work.

No this will not affect the LED bulbs..

looks to me if you had clamped it with about 6 or 8 small steel clamp all around then it would have had a perfect seal but messing around with pliers is not really guaranteeing a good seal and fitment....

Stuff works great. I've reinstalled my headlights and ran my car through a couple washes and no moisture. So far so good. =) However, i have another question: I read someones post on a forum complaining that butly tape caused his headlights to develop a sort of film on the inside because of the fumes overtime or w/e...Is this a credible concern?
@braelinlove1514

I know it’s been 8 years but to follow up, no this should not be a concern, butyl glue is what is used in OEM applications

***** I forgot to tell you this my fog light lens are made of glass will the heat fracture them?
@frostbite1991
@frostbite1991 7 лет назад
super late reply, but for those looking, glass lenses are almost always cemented in and cannot be removed without damage
@samwalker6195
@samwalker6195 6 лет назад
This is a late reply, but the best way to open glass headlights is to submerge them in a bucket of gasoline over night. Clean them well the next day obviously, but they should come apart easily after.

Are there any downsides of using butyl sealant on a tube and dispense it in ”liquid state”?
@Retrofitlab
@Retrofitlab 2 года назад
We don't have experience with butyl from a tube ourselves. But some things to consider; it needs to stay in a hardened state and not get soft when you have a hot day. And that it can be softened up again when it is heated in case something fails. And in liquid state you have more chances of making a mess and getting it on the front lenses etc. so probably also harder to keep it clean during the install. So there are some reasons to use headlight butyl from a roll :-).
