Great to see Basil's work featured! For you folks at home, I got to visit Basil's workshop with Ricky & Simone when I visited S.A. to help with Rigging; To say that Basil is a super talented guy is an understatement, he's a very skilled Engineer and massively great friend to Lady Africa! He's been so critical to many projects on Lady Africa by sharing his knowledge, workshop/tools, and help to Ricky. The project he is working on (that needs the infused panels) is like a massive off-road R/V based on a Unimog type vehicle. Basil is very humble, but trust me he, the quality ad imagination of his work puts the pros to shame. I've been around the world twice and met lots of cool people, I can honestly say Basil is one of the very best people I've been lucky enough to meet!

Thank you for your kind words Luke, and may I return the complement. It was delightful to make your acquaintance and to see your skill and dedication to your work. It was very noble of you to cross the Atlantic to help fellow sailors SV Lady Africa with your expertise and time, at your own expense. Very kind indeed. I hope fate will cross our paths again. God bless you Luke.

Ricky you have done such a fantastic and professional job on the engine it looks absolutely superb. If it is not too late though I would recommend you take off the exhaust manifold and trim those studs so that only two threads protrude through the nuts. This will pay dividends down the line if you ever have to remove it after the suds have heated up and threads corroded. If it is too late - do it at the next convenient opportunity.👍

We use TIGHTEN TO BTB Barr Tight Billy. If he tightened it you could hardly undo the bolts.... On the engine i personally would use a remote oil filter. It is much easier to change and more importantly you dont make any mess with drips as you can put a catch pail under when removing.

Great to see you getting ahead, I think you will need a better belt system for your allternator to get top amps also may be another fan to cool it as allternator will over heat at high amps output cooking it self pretty quick. Great work and good luck hope to see you in nz one day.

On the high output alternator shouldn’t you have a dual belt system. The single belt has a tendency over heat under load.

Loving your progress. Kan nie wag vir die big splash nie. Just a word of advise, use fully synthetic oil for the motor as mineral oil can become thick and grease-like and struggling to drain it out via the dipstick can happen. Daai Isuzu gaan van nou op vakansie wees!

Nice job with the bell. (I'm new to your channel) Dose the adaptor plate on the back of the motor come out to the same place it would normal? I ask because the shaft in the bell is supposed to slide into a pilot bearing in the end of the motor's crank. If the adaptor pushes the bell to far away the shaft will come up short and that end will only be supported by the damper plate (spring plate) allowing the shaft to bounce causing all kinds of issues.
@livingwiththemaias
@livingwiththemaias 5 лет назад
Thank! 😊 Yes it does. We put a shaft extension to align up into the pilot bearing!

Great work again this episode. btw Whats that motors max rpm ? 2000rpm would be for fuel savings etc ?
@CheersWarren
@CheersWarren 5 лет назад
tls cool hi I expect it's an old style low rpm engine. Only modern diesel run high rpm like the Yanmar 35-4500rpm. Check out the Beta diesels they use more traditional engines for their conversions that are high torque, like tractor engines which was the traditional source for marine diesel conversions.(like ford Lehman etc) Their engine probably has a max rpm of 2500 so 2000 would be a good cruising speed for the engine. Prehaps Simone will post the engine specs at some point. Cheers Warren
@livingwiththemaias
@livingwiththemaias 5 лет назад
Thanks. The max RPM is 4000. Yes you are correct. 2000 would be for fuel savings ☺

I think you would be much happier in the future if you went to a Serpentine belt while it is super easy to do so. Otherwise you made end up with squeaking wearing belts, not to mention brake dust everywhere....or maybe you have it set up for that. Hard to tell by looking at video.
@mikeferguson2828
@mikeferguson2828 5 лет назад
yup Ricky 80 amp alternators battle on a single V belt and its my mission to change to a serpentine belt system for my yanmars. 160 amps will kill a single belt in no time. even with my 80s they stretch regularly.
@livingwiththemaias
@livingwiththemaias 5 лет назад
mike smith yea we sure would , only problem is changing the crank pulley into a polyv setup. This is not the final setup just yet , we still have to tweak the design . If we can get the pulleys standard off the shelf we will surely change them 😎💪

Doing oil changes through the dipstick tube is OK occasionally but what about the crap that deposits its self at the bottom of the sump and it will, maybe a sump plug brazzed on the side that is accessible.
@alfa156
@alfa156 5 лет назад
Absolutely would do what you suggested. There will be no way to remove sludge.
@dcbourbonireland
@dcbourbonireland 5 лет назад
The car Toyota Camary 2300 cc diesel engines that only ever got oil taken out with pump through the dip sticks often suffered drastic damage and rebuilds due to the way sludge blocked up the oil feeds. The same engines drained from sump bung and sump cover removed and cleaned were known to exceed 500,000 kilometres with syntehictic oils with normal service schedules to replace consumables like injectors and normal part replacements. I assume there are ways to wash out sumps without to remove the sump covers but offhand I don't know any ways but hopefully other experts can tell us how to do that .Many parts of the world the quality diesel oil is bad with high water content which results in corrosion especialy to sump cases. Worse again in the communist controlled EU the 7% vegetable oil mandated to be added to Diesel fuel to cut pollution lacks lubrication to keep diesel high pressure fuel pumps working properly. That results in expensive rebuilds of diesel high pressure pumps with suitable kits costing typically €200 or buying new units over €1000 a pop. From 2020 diesel fuel for marine use in most of the EU has to be more expensive road transport fuel with the 7% vegetable oil added to it . The off road marked diesel fuel for heating etc with no added bio fuels will become near impossible for boats to get . For many of my EU friends in boats who work as marina rats doing fixing of engines in boats in the EU most of the work these days is just cleaning out tanks and filters from the algae growth that bio fuels cause in modern diesel fuels on boats . The rest of the work is rebuilding or fitting high pressure fuel pumps especially for the modern inline injector types.The problems are worse for engines driven at low RPM for long periods because the excess diesel fuel is returned to the fuel tanks . The inline system subjects the bio fuel to excess heat as it passes close to cylinder heads and the heating causes the bio fuel to become corrupted .Then that unused corrupted fuel returns to the fuel tank and builds up problems .Engines run at high RPM for most of the use don't tend to suffer the bio fuel problems so much. The third word regions the Diesel fuels can suffer from added in kerosene to improve profits and the kerosene content lacks lubrication for the high pressure fuel pumps with excessive wear issues. The older type marine engines from the 1970 era with no turbo and simplex injectors are better able to deal with diesel fuel mixes where there is bio fuel or kerosene fuels or added water content included in the fuel mix .Many types of older Volvo engines seem to be able to use Perkins engine parts resulting in big saving for the same parts.
