Modellers license says you can make supporting structure narrower for the needs of the model. You could shrink the width of the buttresses on the tunnel, this would make the tracks closer together, and thus ease the inside radius, and the curtain walls less wide, giving you a little more leeway with the outer scenery. While it's a big step for a novice(?) you could consider a point kit, or designer pointwork to get the visuals of the sweeping curve looking right.

Looks like you could add a wooden board fillet on the left of the baseboard at the join as you approach the tunnel mouths, that would allow you to bring the track beds over slightly to the left and lessen the curve of the tracks enter the tunnel mouths giving you a straighter track course. Just an idea. Where the other board abuts on your title shot for the video there looks to be scope to add in the board here.

Great work Richard, could I suggest leaving the track as is and bringing the tunnel mouths forward by 15-30cm? I know that means less visible track but that would result in the line of the track being straighter out of the tunnel mouths and you would not get the ‘sharp curve into tunnel look? I think that would look more natural. 😊👍🏼

That inside curve looks very tight for an area that you say you want trains running at a fast scale speed. Working the largest radius curve to the point where it becomes a straight along the wall and then working from back to front where your track setter radius tool was laying might leave you with that innermost curve being pretty tight. Difficult to tell with cameras giving poor depth perception, but getting the radius correct on the innermost track might save you frustration later.
@NewJunction
@NewJunction Год назад
100%, there's no getting away from it the inside line (up slow) will be second radius once past the tunnel portal.

Hi Rich, Just a thought….. If you move the tunnel portal back along the curve, although it won’t be on the baseboard join you will be able to show off the 2 portals & their tunnel wings to a better effect. It will also provide a bit more space for scenic work as the portals will be on a angle which will provide a better view for spectators. With some clever foliage you could still disguise the join.

WOW - your introduction is amazing!!! If you're going to have tunnel, having title plates on the ends of the tunnel for viewers would be a cool idea. It would have the name of your layout and may have other things... As far as realism goes; i have watched many videos on your last layout but forgot how it looked and i forgot if you had high-speed trains, but if you seeking realism and have high-speed trains you may have to make bigger tunnels, right?! Nice work. You need to pickup a cheap 3D printer like the Voxelab Aquila. I've got a ton of tunnels on the layout here, and 3D printing is the way to go. You do the same math and prototyping that you do with scratch building, but you can then reproduce it over and over again. The computer also does precision curves. 3D printers are about the same price as a DCC Ready Loco these days! :) As for the curved points, be careful with them. I've got three of them on the layout here, didn't really have a choice as I had to use them, but they can be quite temperamental until you fit point motors.

I hate to be a naysayer on this Richard but I think this will get some major revision before it works. Great idea and good work but I think that structure needs at least a 3' wide baseboard to work and it needs to be at least one coach length down, (towards the camera) so that the swing of the coach ends entering that 2nd. radius curve won't be seen. If you don’t mind me saying the tunnels in my opinion would look more better placed further into the straight section of the board at an angle with the left side at a almost diagonal with the right side further back. Good to see the progress! What radius are the curves going off screen going to be? Looks like it will be tight for 4th/3rd to be square at the tunnel portal? Is having the tunnel portal on the edge of the scenic board not going to be venerable to damage, and the joint line will be over the top of the tunnel mouth - even move visible? Would moving the tunnel portal further onto the board make for a stronger construction and all the curves to finish inside the hill? Just a few thoughts, sorry if this is sounding negative, since you have made far more layouts than I have. Have you installed point motors or will this be done later? Great video!

@@NewJunction I've used them on the scenic section of my layout with a slight curve. That experience convinced me that more was possible. I can recommend them and they're a really good price. Bob

Coming along nicely, not wishing to throw cat amongst the pigeons but have you thought about hand building the points? I know it seems scary at first but it’s really not that difficult and you can get some really flowing junctions.

I had for a nano second but I feel it may be out of my budget lol

@@NewJunction To be honest if you can make your own vee’s etc (takes a bit of practice) it can work out far cheaper in the long run

@@8nedgehilldieselservicingd212 I've been hankering after modelling Bangor station... will definitely have to make my own points if I'm to accurately reproduce the trackwork into the engine shed... overlapping points and all sorts!
@8nedgehilldieselservicingd212
@@theelectricmonk3909 it’s really not that difficult once you start, although it can be a bit intimidating at first, I’ve built track in 7mm, EM and now in 4mm but it’s very therapeutic once you get into it

Hi Richard, finally caught up with your updates. Just one note on the tunnel portals, would it not be a better idea to fix them to the corner board and keep the scenery fully on that board? The thinking behind that is less likely to get damaged during transporting to and from shows and it will also keep the board split lines hidden. Just a though, thanks JR

@@NewJunction In its raw form, the foam board is weak but once the cladding is on, it becomes a hardened structure. Hope that helps you or someone in the future 🙂

Also, would it be better if you moved the tunnel entrances to a position where the track was more straight? This would look more like the real thing (not that you're copying it slavishly) and will allow you to ease the curves in the off scene section. They look as if they might be a bit tight. Anyhow, good stuff. Bob
