Totally agree with everything you said! I think the use of older actresses added to that lack of whimsy that we felt. It felt unbelievable to watch them go from kids to adults bc they seemed like they were already adults.... Although I liked the director's non linear structure to illustrate themes, I felt that she rewrote the themes of the book. The book is so clear that its themes are personal growth and conquering your bossom enemies like in pilgrim's progress. But the movie just seemed to be a study in mourning childhood for Jo and feminist speeches for Amy (with little for Meg and Beth). Instead of Jo conquering her rebellion and finding the joy in all aspects of womanhood, her rebellious nature is celebrated. The director's hand on the themes were so evident even as Jo wanted to open a girl's school at the end even tho she loved helping boys grow in the book... Idk it seemed to me that Gerwig didn't appreciate the themes and characters that Alcott created.

I agree so much with this. I think the modern twists they took on the themes didn't do justice to the source material. Really interesting, eloquently written argument. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

Oh, I was hoping someone would do this! I've been wondering about this new version. I love the book and the '94 version with Winona Ryder. I'm not usually a fan of hers. But I loved that movie. I remember getting back from the theater and thinking, "Wow, that's the most wholesome grown up movie I've ever seen!" I also especially loved Prof. Bhaer. I would've hated this particular change. And even thought I'm a huge Harry Potter fan, I'm not a fan of Emma Watson in general as an actress. Loved her as Hermione, but that's about all. She annoys me on a personal level as well. Well, I guess this version is not for me. Thanks.

I really enjoyed the non linear take of the new movie. I had been worried before seeing it that it would feel just like the other movies and instead it felt really fresh! I totally see what you mean about Mr Bhaer. It was a totally different portrayal! I haven't read the book in several years but I do remember being frustrated that it felt to like Jo spent the whole book talking about how she didn't need someone and then she ended up falling for someone. I always thought it would have been nice to keep that part of the story ambiguous, so I liked that they took that direction with the new movie but I felt like they should have just cut him all together if that was the case, or maybe have them meet right at the end instead. It felt a bit forced!

Yay, thanks for sharing your thoughts 😊 I totally see that side of it too. I might just have a creepy thing for stuffy old professors because I get that level of frustration too. It does seem like Mr Bhaer was just added to create an unnecessary romantic ending.

I personally didn't like the non-linear story line of the movie for many of the same reasons that you described. I thought it made Beth into a minor character because she doesn't survive into adulthood. I prefer the book (obviously) but I also preferred the 1994 film (maybe because I have more of a sentimental attachment to it). The one thing I will say is that Amy's character is awesome in the latest film. Thanks for the video!

I was really disappointed with the movie. I couldn't get over how old Amy felt. I thought she acted, looked, and sounded older than even meg and that threw the whole thing off for me. And I enjoyed Amy in the book but I hated her in the movie. I really think their casting was off on her!

Yes, I love Florence but she looks way too old for Amy. I mean, Amy is supposed to be a kid at the beginning!

I enjoyed Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet... They played vero good... but movie has a lot of differences with book... I think this movie had a big cast... is a good film but there are a lot of adaptations... The letter that Jo writes to Laurie in which she said "I miss you, etc." doesn't exist I don'like Prof. Bhaer... but in the movie his character was absent... is an important character... not as Laurie but important...

I really hope I'll get to see a nice comparison on youtube of Alcott's life vs what happens to Jo in the books and how that compares to movies, at least the current one. It would be worth finding out how directly she inserted herself into the book, what (if anything), was made markedly different and why.

Hey, I'm writing a term paper on the movie. I wanted to know if gender stereotyping is present in both text and movie or not?

Who cares Amy married Laurie? She was a villain because she burned Jo’s book and took away Paris (yeah yeah Not on purpose) from Jo ☝🏼 and I also agree that Florence looked and sounded way older that most of the sisters most of the time 🥴 but I really enjoyed the movie 😊
