Why don't outboard motor companies design their lower units to carry replacement bolt-on replacement skegs?

I had to add one to my brand new skeg when I was fishing Lake Seminole. It was very aggravating to see that happen. I called folks at Megaware Skeg and they sent one out ASAP. I was out fishing one day in Eufaula and noticed that the guard was missing. They sent another one out free of charge...great folks to deal with.

Hey brotha, fellow strong islander here. Been fishing my entire life and boating. I fish Tampa bay very shallow on a shelf here 1.2 to 2 ft low tide for 60x60 miles 4 ft hi tide for 60x60 miles on the gulf of Mexico side here on the flats., I also fish allot of fresh water lakes upstate N.Y , PA, Delaware, and of course on the island in Renald,s Channel. As well as here in Florida. I used to tuna fish the canyons on my old 27 CC out of Freeport L.I . And I've owned allot of boats from 68 ft to 10 ft. And now I am enjoying the smaller boats a 17 ft carolina skiff on the gulf, x 2 1648 jon boats one upstate N.Y and another here in Florida, as well as a 16ft aluminum deep vee on long Island and a 10 ft jon boat upstate n.y for the no ramp spots. So over the years and all my boats I learned allot. And here's my advice to you. Take that stainless steel prop off and put a cheap aluminum prop on when your fishing lakes and rivers or any body's of water your not used to. Because if you hit something hard enough with the SS prop you break either the entire lower unit, or you break splines out of the head. If you hit something with an aluminum prop. There soft. And in most cases give, and you just bend a blade or brake that instead of more expensive item's. When I'm home on the island I use a stainless prop, I know the water very well and deep water on the south shore. My home lakes, stainless prop. Here in Florida if I'm exploring, I take the steel off and go aluminum. Of im staying where I ha e learned over here I keep the SS on. Hope my advice helps you in the future!

If you hit something will the skeg replacment snap off or take the lower unit housing with it?

How are you liking that skegguard after 9mo?

Damm i just barely shaved some material off mine last weekend on my yamie sho and i felt like shit! Think im going to order one of these before more of the skeg goes MIA 😂🤣

Has anyone had issues with salt water and corrosion with these. I snapped the bottom 2” off my skeg in the driveway pushing it up into the shed! I feel like painting it in duralac before pushing on could help.

You forgot to put the lock tight on

My Skeg on my new 5 stroke Merc 250 is about 50% gone. They say it may be to close to the lower unit housing to weld without the heat damaging the seals. Does anyone have an opinion on this as a real fix and not just a patch. New Lower Units are over $5000 and it may just happen again....
