The Eldris is part of the new 2016 line of knives from Morakniv. Its a small capable EDC fix blade knife that can be carryed around the neck or many other options. Join me as I test this NEW beauty in the field and put it through the paces!

Just for the fact that you put both imperial and metric values in your descriptions, you have my respect. One of the best review on this knife.

Have to agree about the price. At the online shop I go to for Mora knives, the ELDRIS is literally double the price of an older also S.S. Mora Companion. I'm sorry, but no. There are other less expensive S.S. neck knives out there. Some can be fitted with decent traction control grips. And I just can't see paying double for a much smaller and less capable Mora over the company's own Companion model.

CedricAda Gear and Outdoors Let me just stop you right there. This is not a good whittling knife for many reasons: its too wide, not the best steel, bad handle for various grips, 90 degree spine will kill your thumb. Actually, if you ask me, its just ridiculous hipster jewlery but the name roughly translates to "kindling" so if this knife has a main purpuse it would be to assist in starting a fire. Something any knife can do. Now for a "bush whittling knife" you should be looking at the Mora 106 or 120, you will never call the Eldris a whittling knife again after that, trust me. Those knives are used by professionals for good reason.

I always carry a 106 around my neck for crafting and general purpose and they are absolutely brilliant for any number of tasks but its when carving it really shines. Moras laminated steel is amazing.

Cool video. I'm glad these things are finally available in the US. I've started to transition to carrying fixed blades rather than folders. They are just easier to deploy and usually cheaper than a comparable folder that can't do as much.

Gearaholic you see them in stores? There are only two stores within 60 miles of my house that I know of that sells Moras. One charges almost double what Amazon does, and the other only has the Companion, Companion HD and Bushcraft Black. I'd have to order online to get one. My wife said no last week so I'll probably get one next paycheck. My current neck knife is an Izula. Which would you prefer?
@Gearaholic
@Gearaholic 8 лет назад
I can't say witch i prefer because both have there merits. Izula has more blade but requires more maintenance.. Eldris has a Great handle but smaller blade..I personally Like the Mora but Its still new to me and hasn't relieved enough Pros/Cons to give a honest answer! I think when you want something ...you already know you are going to buy it!
@Dkclemons1
@Dkclemons1 8 лет назад
Gearaholic I recently discovered Moras and I'm kind of addicted to them. They aren't all that pretty but they're super comfortable and really sharp. I install Internet for a living and the non tactical look of Moras aren't threatening to most people. I'll definitely end up with this one. Probably next paycheck. Do you think the kit is worth it?
@Gearaholic
@Gearaholic 8 лет назад
Honestly, I think the kit is a rip-off. $20 extra dollars for some string, a peace of leather, and a fire steel don't add up in my book. I think the kit is a bit gimmicky, but if some one wants those accessories its a good deal for them. I would rather carry a Bic lighter and the Eldris as a much more effective EDC.

After testing/using the Eldris with other Moras (911, Garberg,, Kanbol) & pocket knives (inexpensive & high end), I think the stubby Eldris is a miss instead of a hit. Here are my reasons from use to give the Elders a pass (minuses): - The short 2 inch blade is very, *very limiting in ability* as a 3 in or more folding knife can easily out perform it - The 2 inch knife with a smallish handle *lacks the leverage* just a little bit bigger knives have. - This small but fat Mora is *more fatiguing* in wood work & *more frustrating* for food work than most. The Pluses: - small blade = easier to sharpen - quick to use - all-weather design - tough knife This Eldris should come & go after folks realize it's drawbacks. Folding knives like the larger Swiss Army's & other Moras like the 911 or Mora's Basic line-up are much better users all-round than the Eldris. Oops: double post.

Looks to be a very interesting little EDC knife. However, i'm really getting turned away by the Mora price policy lately. First the ridiculously overpriced Garberg, no this little bugger that's twice as much as a Robust even though it's using up much less material. Guess Canterbury's expensive...

Hmmm, not really my kinda knife, I have never really seen the need for a fixed blade knife that small, but isnt that the point really? That it might be the perfect blade for sombody else. I consider my Gerber Gator to be a pocket knife. When I'm out in the forest, my Benchmade Bushcrafter is a fucking pocket knife. Hi bro. I bought this knife based on your recommendation. had a couple of questions: being new to outdoor camping and stuff.. is it normal for the knife to have burn marking on the top after using the flint from magnesium and would that affect the knife with corrosion? Also what type of would chipping would I use to create the fire from the flint because i tried for like 20 minutes and got bunch of spark but that's it? Thanks bro. great channel. hope it grows.
@Gearaholic
@Gearaholic 8 лет назад
First off thank you for taking my recommendation! Yes, it is common to see brown/yellow burn markings on the knife when using a fire-steel and it should wipe off when you clean your knife. No, it should not effect the knife steel because the stainless steel Morakniv uses has an excellent corrosion resistance and edge retention... Its the same steel used in razor-blades! You might dull the 90 degree spine if you use it a lot, my recommendation would be to use the steel scraper that comes with the fire-steel. I "wood" recommend using Fat wood shavings (Pine tree wood saturated with pine sap), the shavings will take a spark and its water proof. When I start fires using Fire-steels I build the fire log cabin style with a solid wood base, I also make sure not to use Green or wet wood. I collect dry grass or anything that looks like it will take a spark and add it to the base of the fire to aid in combustion. I hope this helps you out and if you have more Q's... Keep'em coming! Cheers! G.

Got this knife for Christmas and I loved it ! My bro and I both bought each other one. But we are both wondering the right way to sharpen this knife with the secondary bevel. Scandi grinds are a breeze to sharpen but we're unsure about the right way to sharpen it while maintaining its factory bevel. Anybody have any tips?
@Gearaholic
@Gearaholic 7 лет назад
Use the blade angle of the scandi grind as the guide during sharpening. I use 600 then 800 grit sand paper on a flat surface or leather scrap , 30 passes on either side. Try stropping the blade edge on a piece of leather (light pressure) 25 passes on both sides, check the edge, 25 passes again on both sides. Last, paper cut test to check for hangups. Check out my video on sharpening techniques. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Y7imoLeQ2sk.html

Thanks for the informative review. I went ahead and sprung for one of these since the price went down a little. I think it's a great secondary knife but it's still the highest price I have ever paid for a Mora (Frost). Bought my first one in the 50s for a whopping $1.00 at the hardware store. Old, rusty and still takes an excellent edge. I think this little Eldris will outlast me. Heck, maybe even my oldest one will.

I like the little knife as a neck knife but wish it was made of carbon steel instead of stainless. The steel is supposed to be hardened to 57/58 HRC but it seems softer than that to me. It is the same hardness as an Ontario Combat Knife but does not hold an edge as well. Sharpens easily but does not seem to hold an edge for long.

I think Mora has the intention on making a CS Eldris, they will probably release it in the future. Although I personally like the SS version of the knife (low maintenance, less rust, throws sparks) but I haven't noticed edge issues...I think only time will tell! cheers!
@CSGraves
@CSGraves 7 лет назад
I'll confess, I bought one of these, but really only cause it's kinda cute and chubby looking. Stainless steel and sheath retention aside, I think a Mora Classic No.1 is much more practical if you need to carry a small fixed blade; it's lighter, longer, and thinner than the Eldris, and doesn't have a compound grind which makes the sharpening process more consistent.

You can use it for self defense but its pretty small. Remember that using any weapon in self defense can be bloody, will require a full investigation & Cort hearing, psych evaluation, and possible jail time if necessary. I would recommend hand-to-hand self defense classes or martial arts for inner city protection, plus its easy to justify in Cort as instinctual preservation of life. They also teach De-esclation of force classes for defusing or avoiding conflict. Carry a loud whistle and a blunt striking object like a Kubaton or fat sharpie. Never punch with your fist but with an open palm, elbows, and knee strikes! Face/head, neck, armpits, groin, knee caps, and shins are great places to strike/kick. Remember the object of self defense is to create time and space to escape to safety...don't hang around and Jackie Chan bad guys!

I got one of the red ones for Christmas. It is a fun little knife but I don't know that it really fills a niche. It is most useful as a neck knife. The Sandvik stainless does not seem to hold an edge for very long. I don't think it does anything the Mora Classic #1 can't do, once you sharpen the spine.

Thanks for the video - out of curiosity: I have an array of bigger Moras at home and are currently considering getting either the Eldris or the Mora carving knife 120. I am looking for a blade capable of finishing the filigrane and detailled work, so I have my reservations when it comes to the Eldris as the blade itself is rather big compared to the carving blade. I fear that Mora Eldris is not really marking a positive evolution. the cutting tests confirm that the knife is sharp and that it has a comfortable handle. But all these reviews fail to acknowledge that it is ridiculously small. To cut a slice of bread you have to carve around the loaf. Same with an apple. To take it as the processing wood option one has to be out of his or her mind. If one is in the woods and wants to build a campfire there is exactly zero chance that this will be the only steel capable to scrap a good spark. So what is this tool's actual utility? I agree that it is light and cute and undeniably well constructed. It probably beats not having anything that cuts on you, but you will course the day you were born if you were forced to build an emergency shelter with this tool. I am yet to see a good game skinning review - which may rehabilitate it slightly in my eyes. As it is however, I would not like even to have to cut apples with it.
@Gearaholic
@Gearaholic 8 лет назад
I can see your point, I think of it more like a addition to a larger full-tang blade... an around the camp small blade for those chores the big blades are not suitable for (fine carving, quick cuts, game processing, chopping veggies etc.) or an extra blade just encase.. Sure it has limitations and its not for everyone, but I think if you can get your hands on one you might just join the dark side!

Thanks for showing the cutting of the branch from the inside (fork) first time. I always use an axe the other way, from the outside, but this way it is easier, with a knife at least. Afterwards, yes, it's easier to go from the outside, knife too, like you did.

I'd like it better if it had a "normal" scandi grind like the companion.

This knife is Mora's take on a traditional "tollekniv", it's a knife that is designed for woodworking, carving, not splitting, batoning or any other bullshit backyard survivor nonsense. Google "Helle nying".

the Mora (and other swedish products) are over/rated/priced. What do they earn with such a policy: the chinese will make them for a 10-20th of that cost (=killing the swedish industry). They have done it with everything.
@Gearaholic
@Gearaholic 7 лет назад
If were talking quality and quantity of knife I think the Swedish can probably be at the Chinese any day of the week. And yes I agree ...the prices... they suck!

The Chinese have tried to out do Mora for the last 25 years and have failed. Too many of can't stand the thought of having "Made in China" stamped on their blade.

Some good cinematography here. I like what you're doing with your reviews these days. Question: do you ever feel anxious about the knife falling out when you carry it upside down? Do you think it's ok without the additional clip, or do you think it could come out at some point?
@Gearaholic
@Gearaholic 8 лет назад
Keith Harten I think it's pretty secure, but over time as you wear in the knife it might loosen it in the sheath. Only time will tell!

That is CRAZY! I just don't think they should cost so much, I almost didn't buy mine.. but my knife obsession made me momentarily weak!
@Airik1111bibles
@Airik1111bibles 7 лет назад
+Gearaholic Yeah how do they explain this cost??? I bought a Mora Pro Robust for $11 so I'm guessing they charge another $15 for the 90° edge and dual edge tip......LOL They are cool but spendy little buggers. With Coldsteel entering the cheap bushcraft knife market with their new finn Hawk, it's gonna bring more competition and hopefully better prices for us.

Lo0ks like the same size as the mora 106 carving knife when you put it in your palm shut your hand stick your thumb up like your thumbing a car for a ride lol. It l0oks like its blade will be the same size as your thumb just like the 106. Reason i believe they have made a outdo0r carving knife. if a carving knife is bigger than your thumb then the blade will just get in your way.

Every Day Carry. Indicates gear and specifically a knife almost always carried and used often. Typically a knife evolves as you do tasks and find which you favor; into an EDC.

Fantastic review, subscribed. Great soundtrack as well. I'd love to know who the artists are. I've found the Eldris to be a great redundancy/fine work blade. The handle provides good leverage/control and the blade works outside of its size really well. It allows my big knives to do big work and not have to fumble with detail work.
