Robert De Niro, who was recently nominated for his ninth Oscar nomination for Killers of the Flower Moon, has an upcoming gangster mafia movie where he will play both Vito Genovese and Frank Costello.
The movie was called Wise Guys but will now be called Alto Knights, and is directed by Barry Levinson and written by Nicholas Pileggi, writer of Goodfellas and Casino with Martin Scorsese.
The film has screened and we have a couple of reactions to the movie.

De Niro had a super underrated cameo in American Hustle. He wasn’t on screen very long, but he played a scary and realistic mob boss.

What's a realistic mob boss? There have been too many movie and TV depictions ti know anymore. Most mob bosses today probably pattern some of their behavior off of media depictions. Incestuous circle. Mimetic mobius strip.

@@NormBa yeah but you don’t know how many they’ve met in real life. Whether it’s grown up with them or seen them in their neighborhood at some point. I know DeNiro has a couple pics with real mob guys. Not just going off of media. However with certain ppl it’s all they have to go on since they’re dead and all but he could still work in the real experiences he’s had in the past.

Alto knights was mafia social club...The Ravenite Social Club was an Italian American heritage club at 247 Mulberry Street, in Little Italy, New York City. It was used as a mob hangout and the storefront later became a shoe store, and as of 2022 is a men's clothing store. The club was founded in 1926 first as the Alto Knights Social Club (after an old street gang during Prohibition), and later became a hangout for Charlie Luciano and others. The Alto Knights name was derived from the Order of Saint James of Altopascio. In 1957 when Carlo Gambino took over, he renamed the club "The Ravenite" in honor of his favorite poem by Edgar Allan Poe, "The Raven".

I hate to disagree with you but I think "Alto Knights" is a much better movie title than "Wiseguys"....."Wiseguys" is a word that's been waaaay overused over the years by mobologists on youtube and the public in general. I'll accept obvious movie titles from "pioneering" movie but other than that I hate obvious movie titles. It's like beating someone over the head with their own arms, I mean seriously, could you be anymore obvious than that?...."Alto Knights", on the other hand, is an intriguing title. There's a secret meaning behind it and if you'll do your research, you'll know what it is......

Id look more forward to seeing a Sopranos reboot with Bobby Cannavale as cousin Gyp the boss of the Jersey mob and Michael Gandofini as one of Tony Sopranos illegitimate offspring that we never knew of coming to take back what his murdered dad once owned. Maybe old man Silvo who eventually woke from his coma as a mentor? So many characters with a back stories could be brought to a new light Tony B's Evil twins, Bobby Jnr, Ralphies son? Janice? Carmela who is now married to Furio who left the life, AJ, Meadow who herself has a son called Anthony. Uncle Patsey who is under boss to cousin Gyp, Walden who runs the Aprille Crew, Carrmine Jnr boss in New York, can you believe it? Benny Fazio just out after doing 20 fcuking years in the can without a peep, Little Paulie, Arttie still in kitchen, Slava head of the Russian mob in Jersey. Who wouldn't want to see that?

Vito Genovese didn’t build up the power of the gang he was the beneficiary of Luciano’s & then Costello’s intelligence. When he came back he knew Costello’s power base was gone, mostly Luciano but also Albert Anastasia (the most feared mobster & a true psychopath who they assassinated), & that there was no one there to stop him from taking over once Anastasia was out of the picture. Genovese was the main muscle of their street gang when they were kids & it continued that way into adulthood & Luciano was the only one who could control him. They also underestimated Genovese bc he wasn’t very smart & too impulsive but they didn’t take into consideration that all the muscle would be loyal to him. For the most part the big earners & guys with brains were naturally always in the positions of power which irritated guys like Genovese. It’ll be an interesting movie & it’ll show people how cutthroat & devious Genovese was to turn on someone he’d been close with since he was a little kid.

I saw a pic of DeNiro as Vito on the set and he looked very much like Genovese. I was able to help Debra Messing with some research on Costello’s wife who she’s portraying. She told me he also looks very much like Costello. I hope he gets Costello’s voice right. None of the other actors I’ve seen portray him bother getting that down and that’s a big part of Costello’s character. Have to agree with the previous comment that Costello didn’t take what Vito built. It’s the other way around. Though Vito was apart of building the family, Costello brought way more to the table. Vito had two tries, the first barley lasted a couple years then he had to leave the country, and the second didn’t last much longer before he was jailed. He had the muscle but Costello grew that family much more during his time. Both were fascinating characters however and if done right this could be a great movie.

In a way the both roles thing is extremely indulgent, but in another, it may be that DeNiro just wants a new challenge before he retires or kicks the bucket. Also, he just had a new baby last year. Maybe he needs the money. Regardless, it's weird, but not entirely unprecedented. In Luis bunuel that obscure object of desire, two different women play the same character. So it's not too far off

In Henry's second book, Gangsters and Goodfellas, he explained that they couldn't use Wiseguy for the movie because there was already a Danny DeVito/Joe Piscopo movie called Wiseguys. You only need to have a look at a picture of Vito Genovese to see why they've cast Robert De Niro. And as for Frank Costello, the best actor I can think of to pull that off, looks-wise... is probably Robert de Niro. They were pretty similar looking guys, and they looked a fair bit like Robert de Niro. Not doppelganger as such, but same build, and facial structure. Enough of a framework that the right costume and makeup can turn into a close impersonation.

Robert TheDiva playing both roles probably stems from the same narcissistic affliction convincing himself he would be forgiven his doddering de-aging in The Irishman.

The book that Goodfellas was based upon, written by one of Scorsese's screenwriters, was actually called Wise Guys. I have no idea why Marty S changed the title because it would have been a better one than the one that was used. Does anyone out there know why he changed it?
@samweston6272

Because there was another film released in the late 1980’s called Wise Guys. Starring Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster. That’s why they changed the name to Goodfellas.

The best untold mob story is the Philly mob. Visualize the movie. Phil Leonetti grows up fatherless but idolized his uncle Nick Scarfo. Leonetti grows disillusioned with all the bloodletting, meets a girl, has a baby. She makes an ultimatum. He, has to choose between Scarfo and his girl. He winds up betraying his uncle Nick.

I don't really think the mafia genre is dead so much as its reached a natural lull. There's just not a lot that can be done without borrowing from other films or shows and since most are so recent that's not a good look. Allthe things the punk genre was founded on and against are still as relevant or more today. So wven for bands that haven't evolved much its not tired for a lotta audiences. But when it comes to something as saturated as the gangster film thats just not as much the case. The sad thing is I actually think the ways to explore the settings and characters is near endless. But as we've seen with a number of films that weren't just straightforward gangster movies and actually tried to expand and experiment, studios and fans alike aren't all that receptive. Its sad. I hope it changes.

I have to admit, even mid-90s Deniro was starting to bother me with his acting mannerisms, he is one of the greatest, few had his commitment and passion for acting, but I don't think that he's got anything else to give. I also think the same about the mob genre, the more I read real mob stories, the more I realize that these personalities have the depth of a puddle, its just about making more money by any means possible.

True, but he was good in Killers of The Flower Moon I thought. Even in mid 90's, Heat and Casino. I think he is doing too many silly comedy films. He's 80 though and has nothing to prove.

@@chrisf7189 I feel exactly the same way. He's done a lot of forgettable light roles (The Intern, etc), but at this point his legacy is already firmly established and he has absolutely nothing left to prove. (The same argument can be made for Pacino.)

yeah, really great writers and film makers really made mob guys way more interesting than they are, I mean Michael Franzese did say made guys started to take themselves a lot more seriously after Godfather came out which basically means they felt way inferior to the characters of the story, they're basically fake it till you make it, these dudes like Michael Franzese and Sammy the Bull sound very charismatic when its themselves describing themselves and their values but I bet if you knew how they handled it in reality they'd look like scummy backstabbing thieves, they carry themselves a certain way to look better than they are and fake it and people just buy it

Mafia films went down in the 2000s becasue Sopranos tv series was taking over. The Many Saints of Newark failed because it was poorly written, directed and the majority performances were terrible with the over the top caricatures and over the top Sppranos references or callbacks.. This had a whole different tone and nothing like the Sopranos show even though Chase and Winter were involved. Obviously the STUDIO were the ones that were calling the shots. And it looks like "Wise Guys" might be heading in that direction, I hope not...But I agree, they should've had De Niro face off against another great mob actor like Armand Assante who's never worked with De Niro.

Deniro playing two characters is such a weird choice, the only time something like that has worked in a movie was in Dr. Strangelove and that movie was a dark comedy, the thought of De Niro playing two different characters having a conversation while the camera shots are limited to shot reverse shot just sounds goofy, this movie sounds like it’ll be just as good as Gotti (2018)
