NEW Sony MDR-XB950N1 Review: Should You UPGRADE?

just copped for 119$, I was at BB looking for some IEMS and there were some for 50$ then i saw these on sale....looked up a couple reviews, tested them out. And pulled the trigger. IMO solid and hard to act like anything "new" coming out are really going to improve on being solid bass cans, that actually get quite loud on BT. While also maintaining mids when plugged into my schiit stack, proving to be a solid gaming option for shooters and immersion. The app actually helps bc if im using them for my pc for a movie or game, i can on the fly dial back the bass depending on how bad the bass gets depending on how the game/movie is mixed since they will all differ bass wise. I know the NC isnt as good as the other flagship lines but at the price i got them at id say the 950n1's get the job done. IMO the sweet spot for HP deals are 50-119$. Just always keep an eye out for the deals. There are also a good amount of open or semi-open backed headphones at that price point. Which typically benefit from amp power(my lg phone has an amp in it w.o this the wired listening is quite lacking without a supplemented power source when connected via jack). BC the extra bass and NC is also applicable when connected directly. To those wondering if these will work on a pc or for console....youd definitely need an external amp or amp/dac combo. Of which ive already invested in. If i was considering a purchase for dual use id probably steer clear, also youd want to see if it works with bluetooth for gaming consoles etc(of which i dont own). BT it has "power" if you jack it to a device like a PC or console directly it will be lacking. I just wanted better performance outside of the "Lows" in a bass can option that performs where beats and crushers dont, im pretty sure the 950n1s are the cans. Especially on sale. Crushers would be cool too if you could dial back the bass with an app so you could use it with other gear etc. but a lil lever or etc would probably afffect the mids or highs too which is off putting to me.

That's a pressure release grill on the top. It's not a speaker, but yes it helps a little for sound to leak. I personally have BT's. My hinge also broke, but I dropped mine from the table. As a replacement (while I wait a replacement part from overseas) I bought B1 (they were cheaper than BT with shipping for some reason) and after finishing my purchase I found out that N1 exists.. :D I would have definitely added that extra 20EUR to get noise cancellation, but it's too late

If the N1's didn't stick out so much at the sides, I definitely would've chosen them! (Unless I was going for the cyberman look...which I'm not ;-;) I prefer the more rounded, closer to the head appearance of the BT's so I'll be buying them. Can't wait! Thanks for your review, very helpful

Sound leakage is the sound that others can hear when you're wearing the headphones. They're obviously going to be loud if you're not covering the earcups.

The N1s battery life is 22 hours with Noise canceling on so its more than +2

there's a new model 950B1 .. its exactely like the N1's but without the noise cancelation and it costs 200$ .. i recommend buying the B1's instead of the BT's

dope video, this came on my suggestions after watching about 3-4 videos from other people about these headphones, and you really did an awesome job filming and giving a good in depth review and discussing fully what was needed to know about each headphone separately and comparing them... i actually had another tab open with another video to help me figure out which one to get, but imma close that out because you completely answered all the questions i've been trying to figure out, really great video and good perspective i'm looking forward to see any other great videos you'll be making in the future

Trust me on this, my bt has cracked on the joints, both of them exactly after 2 years... coincidence maybe....and support service claimed it was manually damaged....for cry out loud.... it has been just in my bag.....

Taking off the headphones and having the headphones on doesn't give the same sounleak. With the headphones on the music will guaranteely not leak much at all.

Some useful information for yourself and anyway viewers... I've had the BT's since July 2015 and I got them for an absolute bargain (€135) in Dublin airport on my way to Toronto... Unfortunately, earlier this year the swivel mechanism of one of the cups broke - very easily. After some research, I found that A LOT of people are having this issue! I'm kinda fighting a losing battle, because I love the sound quality and comfort so much that I'd buy them again but the design is a let down and Sony's customer service is not great at all. You might have some luck getting them repaired if they break after 1 year but mine were after 2 years. To get it repaired, Sony will try and charge you almost the price of a new one - Postage fee, repair fee and even an INSPECTION fee... Very disappointed with Sony, I buy a lot of their products, especially audio.

I enjoy working with a fan but the Sony MDR-XB950N1 makes it sound like I am on a motorcycle at 60mph. Furthermore, the headphones hurt my ears if I wear them too long and fall forwards and backwards too. Guess I have to spend the extra for the Bose.

I know I'm a little late to the comments, lol. The grille you see on the top of the cans are actually Bass ports. They intend it to work like a typical car audio subwoofer enclosure, so air can escape giving a tighter Bass response. I still enjoyed the review and it helped me out alot! I got the BT's for 35 bucks almost new, the sound quality compared with other headphones I've used is just crazy! The hype is well deserved for these beasts!

The app is a little more useful than you make it out to be, especially compared to the BT's version. All you can do there is massive bass boost, or none. The N1(and B1)'s version allows you to go from OEM boost to +10, or even down to -10 if it's a genre that doesn't warrant as much bass as these will give you.

Hi i would just like to ask hows your sony xb950bt right now ? is it still okay ? how about the performace of the battery ? and also the swivel part or the one that connect the headcup to the headband ? because most of the buyer of this product have a same problem on that part and they say its easily got broke ? and if its okay to charge the mdr xb 950bt using mobile phone charger ? and how do you charge ur headphone ? because sony didnt put any adapter just a cable on the box .. and lastly is it okay to buy on the amazon of this product ? sorry for so many questions , i just want to verify things before getting this hoping for your response and thankyou in advance nice vids by the way .

The "outer speaker grill" is a microphone to allow the active noise cancelling feature to filter out the ambient noise

i dont own none of them so my question are the MDR-XB950N1 better in any way? like no sound but material quality because mostly thats what i m interested in. the only thing MDR-XB950N1 attract me is that they can fold but i dont see why i should get them for that. i can get the MDR-XB950N1 for 130 euros as for the MDR-XB950BT i can get them for 107 euros. the price difference is not that big.

Man. Just thinking about it, they really should have made it a hard carrying case. If it's more expensive better keep it more protected.

My bt's broke after falling about 1-2 foot onto dirt so I might get the n1's instead of another pair of bt's

Great video! I think I won't be upgrading by know. Really curious about the app and the sound effects it can provide. Is the sound "more clear" or do they have better highs? The Bt's sound insane, but sometimes I loose detail at some songs, and not every electronic genre benefits from the bass feature. May be I'll save and go for the MDR-1000x. Also, for that price, one might expect a hard case.

At about 5:00 you mention that "there's a lot of leaking sound when you **take them off**" - how is this different to when you take any headphones off?

I just tried them on at bestbuy and for some reason I don’t like how they fit they feel completely different! Not sure why maybe it’s because they feel lighter to me? Not sure I have the 950bt and they are worn out big time! Ear cups ripped battery life wearing down they are getting a bit tired! Still kind of want them if they come down to $100 I’ll buy them!

The speaker grill is for all the bass to leak out instead of leaking into the sound.

I tried the BT at Walmart I like how soft the cups are and the look but I wanted to see how well the bass is but Walmart played pop and more pop when I skipped. Cmon Walmart you want your customer to buy your shit or nah.

I had the BT's before and sent them back. the bass was just too much and you couldn't control it. Now that they have an app it may be worth it... but maybe not. I got the v-Moda crossfade wireless and the bass is not enough...lol!!! so I'm in the market for bass headphones again. I like the look of the Skullcandy crusher headphones and the 40hr battery life over the Sony n1's

Drop them once and their toast, best headphones I've had but poor design, super fragile plastic swivels at the ear cups break easily if dropped or not handled gingerly

Great vid! I just have one question. Did sony address the problem with the fragile hinges on the bt when they released the n1? just bought myself a pair of n1 and im worried that it will have the same problem.

Is the build as poor as the first version?! Mine broke after a month whilst sitting on the underground. Sony didn't repair them and blamed me for breaking them. Turns out hundreds of people had the same issue

Hi, thanks for the review of both. I really love the base , most expensive headphone dont come close to it . I have the old BT and many times when volume is at max ,I still need to increase the volume by 10 % but just cant. I tried apps and eqs but they dont help. My question is if you put both on max volume , is one of them any louder ?

Are the N1's exactly the same BASS and powerful volume of the B1's, beacause N1's button says BASS EFFECT and the B1's says BASS BOOST, Is it different?
