MUST WATCH! Welcome new wig wearers or those that are thinking about it! This video is an overview of the new wig wearers experience. I’ll give you my opinion on how to get started! Learn how to manage your expectations in your wig journey. Get inspired and motivated to stay with it and have patience and persistence. And finally, learn how to “come out” about wearing wigs to family, friends and the public. Recognize that the decision to wear wigs is an emotional process and also requires a financial commitment. My own wig journey has led to a better quality of life!I want the same for all of you! I highly recommend you supplement this video with Part II of this series and by researching how to determine your face shape to see how that plays a roll in style selection. XOXO TAZ

I have always had thick curly hair until the past couple months. I’ve lost almost all my hair. I know this video is older and you may not see this comment ever but THANK YOU! The coming out section was very very helpful to me. I wasn’t sure on how to react to people at work. This has been so emotional and devastating to loose almost all my hair.

You end up getting a horrible imitation of a mismatched mess! I didn't know where to turn to or buy from! I know now that I 've seen wigs run in over thou! And sooo many colors! Watching this site more,,,,Love her style and the more blondish wig colors she picks out! Wish I had some! Gotta start somewhere,,,hate to return a wig, cos I made a bad choice and looks terrible on!!! How do you make the right choice? Gotta learn to style it and trim it maybe? You are so awesome. My hair is my identity. There’s not anywhere that I go that I get 1-5 compliments on my hair, even from men. After having COVID my hair fell out at a rapid rate. I wore my hair topper out to a business appt and I just did it. The wind even blew while we were walking to my car and I just rolled with it. I think the stigma of wig wearing is not such a big deal anymore. More and more people are opting to wear hair pieces and wigs it seems. It is what it is, I just have not gone to a full wig yet. My anxiety of my thinning hair outweighs my fear of wearing a wig in public. My next step...this video was perfect for me!

Great video! I don't understand the stigma and reluctance about wearing wigs. There is nothing wrong with my bio hair, but I love to be able to not have to fuss sometimes or for the convenience like when on vacation or something. Wigs let you change your look effortlessly. Most of the time people just think my hair looks great! :-) Back in the late 60's, "falls" and hairpieces were very popular and nobody thought of it as a big deal to wear them, but that seems to have changed in later years. There is nothing more fake than tattoos, yet they are accepted for the most part now, even on women. And as someone else pointed out, fake nails are everywhere and everyone knows it. We need to start getting getting over this wig and hairpiece self-consciousness!

You look younger in a wig...I feel more confident in a wig...I save money in coloring my hair when I wear a wig...there is absolutely nothing shameful in wearing a wig!! Just like getting hair extensions...acrylic nails..etc..etc!!.

Appreciate your openness and sensitivity--and, buying that *first* wig is emotional! I didn't know that, encountered a couple upsets having to do with "expectations" of the sales company--so, this was good to hear. I have two wigs. The first time I wore one out I determined I would appear confident and not assume others imagined I was wearing a wig. I got looks from three men, two clerks who assked to assist me--and met a friend who couldn't figure out what was different. The big test was wearing the 2nd wig out with my kids and in-laws--and former sister-in-law (auntie): NO ONE had a clue it was a wig! When my former sister-in-law complimented me on my hair, I said, "Christine, this isn't your mother's wig!" She couldn't believe it! It was fun!

Hi Taz, Thank you for being an agent of change, a wig ambassador and an empowerment advocate for those folks who have hair loss for whatever reason. I donate my hair. I grow it out only to shear it all off. The stylist picked up the wrong clippers and ended up shearing me so I said "its ok, just take it all off, it will grow back". I then began investigating wigs to wear while it grows. Unlike most, I dove in. I watched a couple dozen wig videos on RU-vid and ordered one! I must have gotten really lucky. I did not measure my head, I did not agonize over color or style and I paid no attention to the presenter and comparing myself with them. I wore it out in public the very first time I put it on. I felt great! I purchased two completely different wigs and love them both. My c'est la vie attitude no doubt comes from the fact that I have never suffered severe hair loss though I did lose half of my hair to menopause and it is still considered thick by most people. So, now that I am wanting more wigs, funnily, I now agonize over color and style and size because I am discovering so many of the designers and find they are all so very different! I apparently have a pea-sized head after measuring it. I thought it was normal to have sizable gaps all over. This is a huge struggle. Now that I have become educated, I have also become more discerning but this is also an amazing experience of freedom! Oh and whenever I get compliments on my *hair,* I always say...."and guess what? This fabulous hair is wig!" Sometimes it is a person who clearly does not have thick luscious hair and I always hope that my joy will help them feel brave enough to embark on their own wig adventure.

As a person with a full head of healthy hair, I look at this like a fashion accessory! I have decided to get into wigs, just to change things up, experiment with styles I'm too afraid of doing on my own hair or don't wish to damage my hair with chemicals. I am in LOVE with wigs now. I had thought originally that I don't need a wig, why wear one? Well the answer to that is, why not? There are so many beautiful styles and options now, wigs aren't just for people with hair loss..they are for anyone.

for 8 years I wore my hair in dreadlocks to mitigate my hair loss. It's worked for me up until my locks grew almost to my waist and started to become heavy and uncomfortable, especially while trying to wear my bicycle helmet. I'm an avid cyclist. when covid hit us, I decided it was the perfect time to make a big change and I cut my locks off and shaved my hair all off. I've been wearing my hair super short - almost a buzz cut since. I've always been fascinated with wigs but didn't like the looks of those old nest looking types and just recently started to explore what's available now a days. well, I'm happily surprised to see that wigs have really changed and I'm more than ready to begin exploring wearing wigs now. thanks for these tutorials for beginners. You really touch on so many of the concerns a new wig wearer may experience. Found this video very helpful and encouraging.

Love this!!! My wig journey began due to a hair cut disaster literally two days before my 30th high school reunion! I happen to go for a quick trim on my already pixi cut and was butured and almost cancelled this special trip. A dear friend who has worn wigs for years came to my rescue and got me through the emotions and into a cute wig for my reunion. I got so many compliments on my hair which made me feel sooo good!! I've always struggled with my hair ...very fine and a bald spot from birth that I struggled to cover all my life. I'm now so excited waiting for my first lace wig...united..and am embracing the fun and freedom I finally have. I'm also a teacher and was first nervous about being around teens all day...but I feel beautiful which the kids see and have no problem sharing my story!!! Thank you for all of your amazing videos!!!

I started wearing wigs in 2005, and I wish I had started sooner, before my hair was so fine and flat that it was just unstyleable. But back then, the selection was much more limited. The worst part was wearing a wig to work for the first time. I worked for a large software company. There was a lot of internal competition. By no means was everyone I saw on a daily basis my friend. There were some people who wanted my job, and would use any sign of weakness as a lever. My BIGGEST mistake was this. I should have totally broken in my wig before wearing it to the office. My head is 22.5" and average wigs always fit too tight when they are new. Some brands' average size is too small (Ellen Wille is an example) and will never fit me. And I should have learned how to tape my wig on so that it would not slide back from my forehead. My worst moment was sitting at a round table with a group of customers and my boss, and feeling my wig starting to slide back. There is no way to adjust the position of your wig at a round table meeting. It would be nice if everyone you know and work with will be happy for you. If that is not the case, you can still start wearing wigs. Easiest is to start when you start a new job. Otherwise, pick a style and color that looks similar to what your colleagues are used to. Break it in at home until you know it is fitting properly. (True average head sizes and petites will not have this problem.) Learn to fasten the wig to your head so you don't have to worry about it moving back or riding up. Start wearing the wig when you come back from a vacation. If someone says your hair looks nice (for a change, you think!) say thank you. Then act confident. You don't owe everyone an explanation.

Just another note. I was 50 when I bought my first wig. Before that, when I went into a meeting and was introduced to 15 people, I could see them (the women especially) looking at my hair when meeting me. I wanted to be "the woman with the short hair in the taupe suit", not "the woman with the really bad hair". I didn't want to look glamorous. I didn't want to have attention-getting hair. I just wanted to have normal hair. I wear my wig 16 hours per day. I select practical, shorter styles that are age-appropriate, yet chic, and are durable. I wore Jon Renau "Blair" for years, and have been wearing Jon Renau "Natalie" for recent years. I have had many compliments from women in the grocery store on my hair style and color. Here is an important side benefit. I once felt it made no sense to invest in a nice wardrobe or take pains with makeup, because my hair would look terrible in any case. Since I started wearing wigs, I have concentrated on fitness so I just look better in general. I now feel fine about how I look at age 63.

Carol Hansen another big giveaway is that if you don't know how to blend in a lace front part with your own hair people especially women will notice because it will look fake. If you notice women looking at your forehead then you don't have it well blended.

I wish every wig shop would sit potential new wig wearers down and have them watch this. I remember the first time I wore a wig to work and mostly everyone thought it was great and didn't know it was a wig, or didn't mention the "wig" part. But their was one witch that was determined to "out me". She would stand over me as I was on my computer and stare down on top of my head, etc. It was miserable for me, actually tramatic. I went to a highly recommended wig shop and let her suggest styles for me based on my face shape, and if my face would light up when she put a style on. That was an amazing experience. Years later, I don't care if you know I'm wearing a wig. I love wigs. My hair goes through very very thin/scalp showing/no bags to more hair and can do well without. It is what it is and I'm prepare to be beautiful either way.

Taz, You are spot on about the wig journey! Thank you for the validation of emotions I have gone through! It is so true what you say. My case is that I have fine crappy hair that takes a ton of work and time every day to make it look remotely good! As I have aged, it has gotten even finer and more sparse! So I started the wig journey! I am happily at the stage now that you talked about, wearing different styles every day. I get a devilish delight when people I encounter realize I must have a wig on because of a color change or length! Lol! It's a look they get when they are trying to figure out what is different about me! I agree 100% with the wig journey experience you described and know that you will encourage many on the same journey! Thank you, Taz!

Thank you for this video. It just so happened I received my 1st wig today and it looks terrible on me. I am 53 and my natural hair is a pretty silvery gray with dark lowlights. It is just falling out by the handfuls, so thin, and my scalp shows very noticeably. Feeling defeated I thought to give up. I happened to key in a search for videos about wigs for women over 50 and found you! Very sound advice. Your video picked up my deflated self confidence. I am going to try again with your video advice in mind.

Thank you, thank you!! Your experience very much mimics my own. I finally took the plunge - I wore my first wig for an entire week last week and all of my co-workers know: My bandaid is off!!! I have always wanted to go blonde, but have never been able to due to hair loss/ fragile hair. No more wishing... I can be blonde this week, silvery pink the next... the options are limitless!! I feel so liberated. I only wish I had come to this realization years ago!

Thank you for this video. I wish that I had seen this when I was grieving for my lost hair. Your comment about not fooling people and wearing the wigs so that you have hair and feel better about how you look hit home. I realized that the reason that I rejected so many wigs and was so self-conscious about wearing the wigs out and to work was that there was still some part of me that was trying to get my hair back. Wearing synthetic wigs just killed me because it felt so fake and shiny and sometimes I could feel people staring. After about a year of having to learn my trial and error, wig after wig, and learning about this whole secret wig world that existed online, I am finally starting to have some fun wearing different styles in public and to work and the courage to have short blonde hair one day and long red hair a few days later and to say "its a wig" when people complement me on my hair. People having the courage to talk about their own hair loss and wig journeys have helped me to be more accepting and stop trying futilely to hide the fact that I am wearing a wig. I am not sure that I will ever get there 100% but progress is being made.

Oh, I know just how you feel. I have only had to see a few people I know so far (thank you Covid!). So far, people think I just got my hair cut. I have a "topper" and recently bought a wig. I have so much anxiety and self conciousness. I do look younger and better, but I still am not real happy with the topper. It is human hair and $600! But, I guess I will eventually learn to live with it. I love the whole secret wig world too! Lots of stories and help.Good luck with your journey.....losing your hair sucks.

Great video! I'm a new wig wearer and I think the advice to get a wig close to your own style and color and also just a standard cap is spot on. I think until you figure out which manufacturer's wigs fit the best and what styles suit you that is the way to go! I kinda got lucky with my first wig purchase in that it fit reasonably well and looked reasonably natural. It helped me to persevere. I like bangs though so that helps! Thanks for mentioning about feeling that you have a hat on all the time and that you get used to it. For some reason I didn't expect that to be an adjustment.

Wigs are so nice and make me look and feel better. I am so glad you have been open and helped all us wig wearers on our journey. I am getting used to wearing them out in public now and starting to feel more confident each time. I am connecting with my grocery clerk who is on the beginning of her wig journey too. I hope we will become good friends through our wig journey. Also, I have tried and returned several wigs, most of the return postage is on me and that is fair. Expectation is the key like you have stated. My experience says to find a wig that is close to your own color and style to start with.

I have just purchased my first wig (Violet by Estetica). I was lucky enough to have a small wig shop in my town so was able to go and have 'shopping time' with my mom. We went in expecting just to look around, see what worked for me, make notes and then buy one in the next few weeks. Could only describe the experience to wedding dress shopping! Tried them on and what looked good on the rack just wasn't me. Then I found 'the one' and nearly started crying it was so perfect. Our window 2.5 hour window shopping experience turned into 'we must have this'. My mother took a picture and sent it to me and I can't stop looking. (And I have never liked pictures of myself.) We ordered it in a color more similar to my natural color and now we just have to wait for it to come in. I'm more than looking forward to wearing my fabulous new hair and showing it to my hairdresser cause she is going to love it!! Haha

TAZ! XOXOXOX Even though this video is now 6 years old it is sooooo helpful for me. I STILL have not bought my first wig, but I am getting very close. I watch a few more of your videos every day and the insight you provide is phenomenal. I was diagnosed with stage II breast cancer and I am blessed that I will not need chemo. However, I will get radiation and I will take an estrogen blocker pill both of which will cause even more hair fall than I already have just from aging. I just turned 70, but I feel young and I look young so I desire to have nice hair. Looking at your videos makes me realize that wearing wigs is a wonderful, adventurous journey and it does not have to be a secret! My plan is to dive in openly, experiment, and have fun with trying lots of styles and colors. Which reminds me of a friend of my mother who had full alopecia, and a completely smooth and bald scalp. I was at lunch with a bunch of women and she was there in a gorgeous red wig. I had no idea she had a wig on and I commented on how beautiful her hair was. Immediately another woman at the table burst out with "she’s wearing a wig!" I am not sure how that made her feel, but she handled it so graciously and with a smile acknowledged that it was true. I believe in women empowering women and women like her and yourself lift up those of us who are embarking on this journey. Thank you so much.

Great & informative video. 99% of confidence in wearing wigs is attitude. I like the attitude of those who wear them just for fun who don't need a wig, they don't care who knows it's a wig because no one knows why they're wearing one so their confidence shines through.

What an awesome video Taz! Although I have been wearing wigs for only one year and my reasons are different than most since I have minimal hair loss , your thoughts were spot on about expectations and being self conscious about wearing them. I agree once you get comfortable wearing them there is no reason not to get out of your comfort zone with length, style or color. Just be sure not to mess with it too much in case you want to return it. 🌠

Hi Taz. Even though I’ve been wearing wigs now for about 1 1/2 years, I found this video to be very upbuilding, encouraging and very informative. I related to everything you said as I am going through my journey. All I can say is when I put my wig on I feel pretty, like I used to with my thick bio hair. I can’t get used to my now thin, stringy “feathers”, and why should I have to when there are so many options out there to make me feel better about myself. Love your videos, Taz, and I think this one was very special, especially for women considering this option. 💝

This is such an amazing video. I wish I had this advice when I was in my 20s when I first started wearing wigs. I'm now in my early 50s and I'm FINALLY starting to dabble in wearing different styles. Mostly because I am not aging particularly well and the style that served me well for so long simply doesn't anymore. I finally went to a wig store for a consultation. It was so fun!!! That said the most realistic styles are pricey. But like you said manage expectations and hold your head high. ❤️

First of all, I wanted to start off by saying that I was lucky to have your clip come up by accident because I needed it. The beginning of your hair loss journey is honest, truthful and touching, it really made me feel better about my situation. We tend to be our own worst enemy and usually the public could care less what your wearing, or how you look, unless its something really outlandish and crazy looking and then that will draw attention to yourself. I have always loved wearing wigs, even when I was in my teens. I have always loved fashion, makeup and hairstyles so wigs were a way of expressing myself. I am now 67 and of course I have gray, thinning hair. Ow and don’t like one bit. Wigs have changed a lot from back when, so I am lost now. So far you have given me some good info on what to expect and how to buy now. I have always been afraid of them falling off, because of bad experiences, but I will continue to follow you so I can get ideas. Thank you very much, you have been so helpful.
