Oh My Gosh!!! WAY back, believe it or not, I was one of the handlers of Clarence_ around the early '60s!!! He was such a sweet boy, and YES - he WAS very cross-eyed. We were all so sad when he passed away around July of '69 at a rather young age! Thank you so much for the good memories there, buddy.✨🤗✨

I have just got back into air gunning. The last time I owned air rifles was as a teenager in the early/mid 90s when I had a couple of BSAs and a Diana with which I used to go rabbit, pigeon and rat shooting, along with regular plinking to keep up my marksman(boy)ship. Now in my early 40s, I live somewhere that has a rabbit and rat surplus (and having just divorced my vegetarian ex) I’ve decided to get back into air gunning. Obviously, after so long I’ve got to get my aim back to spot on before going after anything alive, so decided that I would speak to my local gunsmith and seek his advice. In the future, I may well treat myself to a more expensive PCP, but to start with I decided to go for a entry level (but still decent) springer. So when I wandered into the shop, not only was the chap a very nice, knowledgeable and happy to help gunsmith, he also had a few secondhand rifles that he sold on commission for other customers. Given my knowledge of air rifles isn’t amazing, I had already sort of decided to stick with what I know and look for something similar to a BSA SuperSport, the rifle I had when young (new or secondhand, I wasn’t too concerned) By pure luck, he had just taken in a perfect condition BSA Lightning (and including a fairly decent Hawke scope) which also came with a warranty (provided by the shop not BSA obviously). For me, as a (sort of) newbie this was perfect, especially given it’s a carbine as I live on a boat and do not have a great deal of space. I’ve already put a few tins through it and am really happy with it and for under £200, it seems the perfect set up for someone like myself.

One thing I’ve found about the general air gun community (I’m talking real air gun lovers) they are honest, friendly and approachable... it’s a grey area this, I’ve always purchased new from shops but the three second hand I’ve had (all collected by myself) were all practically new, as advertised and very very good value! On the flip side I purchased a brand new HW100 that required returning for repair after 3 weeks due to leaking 😂 it’s a tricky one! Late to this one but great video!

20 years ago I paid £50 for a late model BSA Mercury from a private seller. Other than keeping it clean and changing the old breech seal I have done nothing to it. \the rifling is great, the barrel is true and the rifle consistently provides a tight group. It is still producing 11.5 FtLb and is a great old rifle.

@kurt5079
@kurt5079 2 года назад
@@billdesmet3929 Nobody said the UK is innocent... I wasn't looking to trigger people merely pointing out due to higher regulation gun deaths are very rare. Suicides is a valid point. Police deaths are not. Police deaths are also incredibly rare as police are not armed as standard and generally neither are the people they deal with. So again due to regulation and the lack of armed police it is an issue that doesn't really come up. I'm sorry If you did not like it but my point is both accurate and valid.
@kurt5079
@kurt5079 2 года назад
@@billdesmet3929 Also on knife crime. Last year in the UK there were 221 killings with a knife or sharp instrument. Not ideal but still 45,001 less deaths than guns in the US the previous year. It is more likely someone will survive a knife incident than a gun one. I am not attacking America or creating a UK vs USA situation. Just pointing out that while higher regulation can be frustrating there are also benefits.

Good advice. I got my old, gently used (1 small scuff) Dianawerks M-34 for $150. It's a nice mellow rifle, that shoots perfectly still. I fixed it up a bit, and so forth. I ordered that AA pro sport Walnut in .22. Never had as much anticipation over a spring-piston since my HW35E. I'm praying for nicely figured wood, and no flaws anywhere. The video gives really solid advice. Easy to get burned.

Great video again Andy, and good points made. I've only ever purchased 1 second hand gun and that was from the shop I've purchased many other new guns from. I have been offered many for sale at my old club, but always declined the offer as I didn't know the history of what was on sale. I would rather wait a few more months and save the extra to buy new. That way I know the gun will be looked after, have no performance issues and usually will have a good warranty in case of any problems which arise. It may sound a little snobbish, but I like to know that what I'm shooting will perform to its best whilst remaining within the parameters of the law. I've always got a good price for any trade in's that I have made by using the same shop for years and knowing what sort of mark up they will need. They are always happy to take back a gun they originally sold that is in mint condition without question. Using the same dealer also let's me haggle more as they know I'm a good customer who will return time and time again and spend my hard earned with them. Its the gun shop for me all the way when shopping for new kit or bolt on bits! Cheers and keep safe!

Even though I'm not in the market for a used air rifle, all the reviews are so good I have to watch them :) And to those in the market for a used one, go with a reputable brand. I was pleasantly surprised when I brought out my old (33 years more exactly) BSA Supersport Custom .25 to see that there was spares available from lot's of different sources. To nitpick, I'd like more springer reviews, i.e Weihrauch, Diana (especially 440/470 Target Hunter). Cheers

Sound and sensible advice , almost all of my guns were bought second hand with the exception of a Remington Express which I think was a bargain , I've only had two poor buys neither of were expensive and both were cheaply fixable , but I've been shooting (on & off ) for over 40 years so have some experience and probably been lucky . Stay Safe Stay Well and Keep on Shooting (plinking in the garden at least, until the end of the lock down).

Great video on buying secondhand. I've worked full time in the gun trade and still do a bit , this has some great advice. No matter where you've bought a gun from I'd always keep in mind that it will probably need a service in the near future and for some PCPs that can get quite expensive , even for a Springer you can be talking about £70 plus for a full service.
@hooters28

Very good points raised there as usual Andy. I have a fair collection of PCPs and the only ones that really held value are the Daystate limited editions. I find that brand also comes into it as, like clothes fashion, certain models become really popular for sometimes no real reason and then this has an affect on the value of others from the same manufacturer. However, the only way anyone is getting any of my rifles from me is to prise them from my cold dead fingers. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

A very valuable and information-rich video, Andy… I’ve sold quite a few myself. However, I haven’t purchased a preowned gun for a few years… the last was a Beeman R1 springer in 20 caliber. It had a repaired stock, and it definitely wasn’t cheap, but it was from a reputable dealer, so I took the chance…. The gun was(is) a real gem…

I got my first PCP last year, a nice little BSA Ultra SE, which I found through Gunstar (UK website for second hand and new guns). It was listed for a shop a town over, so I popped through for a look, as the price seemed too good to be true, as it came with a Hawke Scope, silencer and bag. When I got there, they let me look the gun over, and though I couldn't test it as the shop didn't have a range, it came with a 3 month warranty and they had fully checked it over and cleaned it. As Andy says, I would highly recommend going to a reputable store where you have recourse if there is anything wrong with it. I also had my first trip to Drapers last week and found the staff to be very friendly and welcoming, willing to answer any questions I had and letting me handle the guns I was interested in. Walked out a happy customer having bought my brothers birthday present from them.

Thank's Andy. First class as usual. I'd like to thank you for getting me back into airgunning. I used to have a couple of old Slavia springers when I was a kid. I have started buying a few guns and setting up a range in my basement. Sure helps during the pandemic. I am somewhat jealous though. Over here in Montreal, there are very few places where you can buy airguns, none of them specialized, there are no ranges and practically no second hand market. Another source of envy is your higher FPS limit and legal silencers. But we have full auto :-)This said, I really appreciate your enthousiasm for the sport, you are funny, intelligent and easy to listen to. Keep'em comin'

Totally agree with all you say. I love my springers but the trouble is as you say when you have something you like you are reluctant to let it go. Eventually you end up with more guns the you have time to use them. Best policy I think is do your homework then try a few of what you think is right and pick what feels right for you. Interesting video. I have been looking at getting back into airguns having sold my RN10 a couple of years ago. I was looking at buying a new gun/scope package but they were looking at £1200 for an S510/HW110. I managed to find a HW100 with Hawke scope, bipod, boxed, 2 magazines for £655. I contacted the guy who lived 120 miles away and he agreed to drive and meet me half way. Always a bit of a risk buying used but thankfully this was an excellent purchase.

A lot of very good points Andy. Sometimes a second gun is £30 cheeper and for that saving you get no warranty and most of the time a few marks and blemishes. I’ll pay the extra unless it’s a 80s springer I’ll been looking for. For a while. Great insightful blog.

Had to travel from derbyshire to north shields in Newcastle for it managed to get a black bsar10 with Hawke scope, bipod, silencer, bag and pellets plus all Receipts for the bargain price of £650 this was 7 years ago and I still have this beautiful gun today. I have had some work done over the years on it not because there was anything wrong with it I just wanted it altering to my preferences. Its had a full John bowker blueprint and the barrel length shortened.and puts pellet on pellet every time. This vid brought back a bad memory, & is good advice for anyone, not just newbies to the airgun world. I bought a mk1 BSA R10 about 5yrs ago that had a certificate for a blueprint tune from J.Bowkett. Couldn't try it as it didn't have a scope fitted, & the guy lived in a flat. Once i got it home & scoped it up, the damn thing wouldn't shoot as I'd have expected it to. I persevered for a while, but eventually gave up & sent it to Phil at the RatWorks as he only lives down the road, & it seems that all the good bits had been taken off, & replaced with the standard R10 bits. Lesson learned for me..........shoot it, & chrono it before buying. If you cant, walk away.

Firstly I think this is the most informative video you’ve made. Every new buyers should watch it. Wow. I this we’ve been on the same Buyiing journey. Quite often. I’ll look at a used gun and still end up buying new because the owner says it’s tuned or it’s almost the same price as a new one. or just I’d like everything that comes with a new gun including warranty. Some of my favourite guns are late 1960s early 70s you can’t buy them new And like you say 9 out 10 are over priced scrap I find most gun shops have scrap yard corner. Guns with parts missing no sights scratched and rust and If they see your eyes light up. It’s like taking your wife to a car dealership for a new car and she jumps up and down screaming I want the that one, no matter what it cost , in front of the salesman Pcp’s are the worst to keep up with. They go out of fashion faster than r£100 tipped jeans a friend bought a top of the range. PCP Waited weeks for it bought all the extras Got it home didn’t like it. Just wasn’t for him, tried to px it a few weeks later. They told him. They aloud him less that a quarter what he paid including tank scope and hard case.. never stop learning everyday is a school day. The best day is when your picking a new gun up. Maybe that’s just me Keep the videos coming it’s making lockdown bearable. Cheers 🍻

Great video as always. Why more dont buy second hand amazes me as there are some excellent rifles turning up as all rush for the latest FX, AA or Daystate. Huntsman Regal, AA410 being prize examples. And yep, why get rid of a good springer you won't get much for it, they go on forever and make a great backup when the dive shop is shut indefinitely. I have to say I would always go through a dealer for second hand though as at least if you find the seals have gone you will have some comeback and they will have tested it to make sure its the correct power for your needs.

I still have my first springer too. Apart from sentimental value, it's good to have something in your quiver that just works, doesn't need air or CO2, and will always be ready to go.

Thanks to Andy’s informative and entertaining uploads I’ve decided to get into the sport properly. I have a .22 springer that I bought especially to deal with rats coming into our garden via next door, who insist on feeding the wild birds. Problem now solved, just the occasional rat trying his luck. Anyway, I am now awaiting delivery on a Walther Rotex Varmint .177 and the rest of the gubbins needed to start off in the world of pcp shooting. A bit expensive to buy all at once but hey, it’s my 60th birthday next week so I’m treating myself. Mrs. H won’t be too pleased about it though. Thanks for the vids Andy👍

I've bought new and used air guns, mostly used. For example, bought a used Hatsan BullBoss .22 on eBay for $265 in perfect condition and very accurate. Good deals on eBay depends on the time of year. Bought a used Hatsan 135 in .30 caliber on eBay and again, arrived in perfect condition. When buying new my first stop is Pyramid Air and a few other reputable online stores. I stay away from Amazon. Anything purchased from Amazon is almost guaranteed to arrive damaged because of how it was packaged. In my area local mom and pop gun shops don't sell air guns or have a very limited inventory. I've had great success with Walmart purchases both in store or online.

Just like buying cars, it comes down to how much you can afford and how much do you want to pay. I love both and having been shooting for over forty years, it's a serious hobby in my life. If I want it I will buy it, no matter tbe cost. Even if it means doing without other things, like holidays etc. I nearly always buy my airguns, shotguns and firearms new. My wife doesn't mind as our son shoots as well. Happy days.

Great video, I’ve been considering buying second hand but always dubious of what I’ll end up with, I’ll see if the gun shop has any appetite for a trade in when they reopen and stick with new I think.

Hi Andy , Congratulations on today's show , a very tricky subject. Bet this gave you a few headaches ! Thank you for your hard work 😓. Everything you say is spot on . I've bought a couple of second hand Rifles . But I bought from a gun shop , so I could know some history of the rifle and it's serviced and some guarantee. It's worth paying a little bit more , for peace of mind . Looking forward to next Fridays Review. Be safe folks . Thank you Andy . - Cheers Simon from York 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🇬🇧

Bought a few refurbs from pyramyd air here in the USA and while not screaming deals, they saved me a lot over new. I had great luck on the old Kitching 'yellow' ads for a few more that have been and still shoot great as long as I do my part. And a few more new airguns rpm various places that I've had OK luck with. One needed a total rebuild right of the bat, and others just needed extended break in before finally settling in... So, I guess it's true. You're either lucky, have a good handle on your sixth sense for the deal, or ya get screwed...

A lot of common sense there Andy. I have never bought a new rifle and I have 4 PCPs, a mk1 Compatto, a mk1 Wildcat, a BSA r10se, and a Artemis P15. The Compatto and Wildcat were bought face to face and they are awesome. The r10se was bought unseen and posted to me, but only after many pictures and videos of the rifle and many conversations, again, awesome. The P15 did take some work to get it right, it was not accurate at any range, I turned it into a project rifle and had a HW110 barrel converted for it, it is now my most accurate rifle. I do believe, with the right research and getting to know the seller will lead to a good buy.

Not really on topic but I just figured out that the Crosman DPMS AR-15 bb gun cycles "low ricochet smart shot" lead bbs! Don't know if it effects the accuracy but I can't wait to see! I know most bb guns won't so it's pretty neat for me.

Great article. Some interesting points. I have bought mainly new with a couple of exceptions. Only thing I never buy secondhand is tools , that's just my thing. Buying guns is like buying a car or a motorcycle , if you don't know anything about them , go to a dealer. Once you build up some knowledge and experience then buying elsewhere becomes less of a gamble. I hadn't thought about the legality issues. 👍

It really depends on your budget and your experience. A good gunsmith will have quality SH rifles and new AND can give good advice - whether you want new or SH. I would always go for the high end SH option where you have a fixed budget. If you not constrained by cost ( or not you after rare SH items) then I would buy new.

And to add to your list of "where you may buy from:; add Car Boots (or if you are a US reader the closest thing I think may be "garage sale"). My father has picked up a few 'project' guns that way.But of course as people have mentioned "buyer beware' but the prices tend to be cheap.

I may have a Springer but she's a good one R-1 Beeman liked it so well , I bought a second $200.00 for my first and $265.00 for my second. Gave it to my Grand dad before he passed away then to my dad latter after my grand dad .. But would like a PC Rifle.. But it's the compresser and do dad's that shy me away .

As Andy Suggests but be careful Gunshops Dont buy anything from “The Gun Center” in lower town center in Swindon guys a con artist, even some pellets were messed up, buying in Swindon gonto “Wiltshire Rod & Gun “ well run clean bright , may be bit more but the quality is there checked over before purchase as well nice .

My grandfather and i watched many of those greats.. Including Clarence..Then we would go and shoot in the front yard (in the country) after watching the rifleman or Branded... He was friends with and shooting buddies with Cecil Brooks,gunsmith,i held some muzzleloaders that i couldn't touch today with velvet gloves.. The flashbacks continue..lol...
