She had EXACTLY the right reaction to the ending that everyone experienced in ‘88. It just shows you how timeless the music is. It’s a shame this one didn’t win as Madison was a juggernaut. It will, however, always remain as one of my favorite shows of all time.

Juliet Ferriera is the name of the Phantom of the Opera color guard actress (the main dancer) in this performance. She’s my high school marching band’s color guard director, and she’s absolutely AMAZING. She’s done so much creative work to make our marching program top notch, and we idolize her because of it. Can’t say enough good things about her.

the music moment you described after the show ended really is a profound and special thing. it's not just being unified with pride while competing with your fellow members, or the knowledge that it's your final opportunity to perform with (or even be in the vicinity of) this family of people, performing something you've rehearsed every day for months and months, since after finals, IT'S ALL OVER, and everyone goes home to wherever in the country/world they're from.......but on top of all that, it's about that feeling when you see, hear, and FEEL the crowd being affected by your performance. in my 5 summers of doing this (03-07), my most memorable and cherished on-field moment was at the climax of our (bluecoats) 2006 ballad, and i can still remember the exact feeling at the moment we arrived at our big major chord. i can picture the view of the crowd in wisconsin from behind the bell of my horn and feeling this tangible rush of energy from the crowd, the emotional resonance of all the harmonies, melodies, and dynamics we'd been building up. (ironically, or perhaps not, in a meta kind of way, that sort of connection was kinda the concept behind our show as a whole.) i felt unified with the crowd, like they felt what i was feeling in that moment. it's the big payoff, the culmination of months of effort.....but don't sell your own emotions short!! what you experienced is exactly the point, and i appreciate your earnestness and humility in terms of sorting through your responses. we do it all summer long, day in, day out, and it's exciting (and difficult) to push ourselves to be as good as possible and all, but there's really nothing like sharing this craft with a crowd of people, reveling in their surprise, and basking in their gratitude and enjoyment. it's truly a two-sided conversation, and reactions from people such as yourself, whether it's in crowds, and online like this, is the exchange of energy we do it for. also, what you said about old drum corps being pretty similar to modern drum corps, and the honor of carrying on these traditions and keeping the legacies going, are both so so so true. it really is an immense honor to help carry the torch for the activity, in the footsteps of these timeless shows we know and love. there are a lot more similarities than differences; rule changes or not, it's still the same 'thing.' for what it's worth, i'm not sure drum corps is dying, or even getting less popular than it was 10, 20, 30 years ago. yes, there are less corps than there used to be, but there are still full stadiums around the country as the tour is going on, and thousands and thousands of people auditioning. people like to say it's less popular because they're not happy with some of the modern rules changes, and want to act like the changes killed the activity just because they're mad about the changes. it's not 'popular' like mainstream popular, but it still seems pretty healthy. while some people hate the new rules, others love them. i love older shows (especially once asymmetrical drill became a thing in the mid-80's) and new ones alike....i used to be cranky about electronics and rule changes, but i love the performance level of where the activity's at these days, so i'm just happy to be along for the ride. cheers to anyone who got this far!! much love and here's to hoping for a strong and healthy comeback for our beloved music-pageantry-sport in 2021!

Also, your perception and feeling about how it feels to perform is spot on, but what I find even more amazing is that you TOTALLY get the feeling of family and camaraderie everyone that's marched with EVERYONE else that's marched drum corps. It's an instant bond and feeling of understanding and friendship. You *know* how hard they worked, you *know* that person went through hell but also experienced the best times and biggest sense of accomplishment. I've actually got jobs because an interviewer knew what drum corps was and saw I'd marched on my resume'. They understand that level of hard work, dedication, and teamwork is something few people can match, and I'm so, so thankful to this day I got to experience it. :)

You got to see the two styles that make up Vanguard. On one side, Vanguard is amazing at doing arrangements of Broadway musicals such as Phantom, Fiddler on the Roof, Les Miserables, and a few others. On the other side, they are incredible at performing a lot of 20th century and contemporary classical music, which is what you heard in the Babylon production. It definitely does good to watch corps in the 80s and 90s because you get to see the corps' musical and visual identity evolve and change from year to year. That was a golden period of drum corps.

There is nothing else like this. It takes so much energy and commitment to do this. Santa Clara did this show but very different arrangements 2 years in a row. The 1988 show was so very incredible and the 1989 was even more incredible. Vanguard played after us at many shows and we got to go in the stands to watch all the other corps perform. It was such a magical time beck then. I wish I had a time machine to go back!!!!

FMM -- The Cavaliers '77-'87 (Baritone/Contrabass)-- As performers, most of us are so focused that we try to block the crowd reaction, but when it hits, it's a feeling that's very hard to explain. Sometimes the crowd can be so loud that it overpowers our playing, and that's when it becomes difficult. When your group hits on all cylinders as Santa Clara Vanguard did here, with the emotion and power, it's pretty awesome. That's a hard feeling to beat, knowing that you left absolutely everything on the field, with no regrets. That's what makes it all worth it (win or lose)

I was there in Kansas City in 1988. I have seen this performance a thousand times since, but watching with Courtney made it seem like the first time!

Something to be said about the quality of sound without being dependent upon amplification and electronics... If you like the recording, hearing it LIVE was incredible. The sound was THICK and tangible. You could feel it in the air around you. Speakers can make loud sound, but it is not the same.

There is simply no substitute for giant sound being made by humans, and the listener being aware of this at every moment. No amplifier and no electronic effect will ever have this fundamental power.

Courtney I think you'd really enjoy Cavaliers 2006 show Machine. It was mid-2000s Cavies at the peak of their dominance and as someone who really seems to enjoy the drill aspect of DCI, I think you'd really appreciate how cool and unique their movement is! Definitely worth checking out!

It is overwhelming. Was there on the 50. If you don't know the story of Phantom of the Opera, watch the musical (not the movie) and you will gain an appreciation of what they did on the field. Especially the meaning of the mask/masquerade. And you are absolutely correct on the big brass sound. It is what keeps me coming. If you like it in the videos, just wait til you hear it live. There is NO comparison.

Another instrument facts: they're actually using bugles! More specifically, two valved (button) bugles. Whenever the 2 trumpet/ soprano horn soloists played, you can tell there's only 2 valves

A corps worth looking at is Star of Indiana. 1991 is one of my favorite shows of all-time and 1993 was so different than anything DCI had seen at that point.

1989 was a special year! SVG just edging out Phantom Regiment in one of the closest finals of all time. Please watch / react to Phantom Regiment 1989 “New World Symphony”. Both shows are still in my top 5 all time shows. A huge thank you for exposing the world to DCI. Much love and respect to you from the USA

Nice to watch this, Love that you love it. The first ever DCI finals video I saw was 1988 (I'm 50 BTW) I was in a Drum Corps in England at the time and DCI was the 'Premier league' of Drum Corps (the best of the best) so we all idolised it. All the corps were incredible, it blew my mind! they were amazing. The one that really stood out for me though was 'Blue Devils', the coolest corps and the best sounding hornline I've ever heard, to this day!. Please do a reaction video for BD '88. I hope you won't be disappointed. Great vid. keep up the good work
