People got used to "unless the person is lying near dead on the ground unnecessary roughness shouldn't be called" which is not how the rule works. Crown of the helmet contacted the player above the neck. That's a penalty no matter how light it was.
I def agree with the call. The dude wasn't just leading with his helmet, he was actively trying to hit the dude in the head, and on what was essentially a defenseless receiver. You can literally see the dude adjusting his trajectory and following the dude down as he's falling. Then the dude does wind up making contact, even though its not a lot, I think him trying to was bad enough to where any contact warranted the flag.
I disagree with the "shit is weak" portion. Player lead with the crown of the helmet, did make contact with the back of the receivers helmet, even light contact like that can cause a concussion. That penalty is all about safety and reinforcing that you do not use your helmet as part of your tackling kit; and you do not aim for the head.
@@kristiansmiley2221wtf? Lol was easily a flagable play. Why not just put hands on him? Then acts all tough after hitting someone who was essentially just sitting on the ground GTFO of here 😂
On that fourth and one at 1 at 50 seconds, between Chicago and GB, it looked like Chicago didn't make it, but worse, when the ref measured it - he didn't pull the chain tight and it clearly looked like he brought the chain back towards the ball a few links.
That one was really bad! The helmet to helmet gave Ty Johnson a concussion? How is it not a penalty? He should get fined for that! I remember Damar getting disqualified for a lesser hit
Damn right!! Refs: We don't get paid enough!! Me: Do your jobs right, and you'll get paid, dumbass!!! You make a bullshit call or blow another obvious one that Stevie wonder can see, and you're gone!!
I think the reason for the no offside calls on the Texas is because the person putting the line of scrimmage on the field is just a little but off or the center moves the ball back.
@@sillyrascal3382 start watching point spreads. Every single time a team gets screwed on one of these calls that team doesn't cover. They are rigging games with these phantom penalties.
I love how the very first clip shows Washington's player use his head to hit the Cowboys player and barely attempts to use his left arm/body to make the hit.
Yeah IDK why that first one is in there. Not only did the guy lead with his helmet, which is illegal, he led with his helmet againstwhat was essentially a defenseless receiver that had the back/side of his head to him. To top it off, the guy was tracking the receiver's head! Which makes it so much worse! You can see the guy actively adjust his positioning so he could try to follow his head as he was falling. That was honestly dirty af.
@@undeadarmy19Because if you watch it in slowmo you can see the contact was light so those people do t think it is a penalty. The rule is clear and the refs only judge those plays at full speed, so yeah it’s clearly a penalty.
the opening clip is 100% a penalty his helmet clearly hits the receivers helmet, regardless of the power of the hit he lead with his head and thats a nono
You are 100% correct and the it was clear that the ball was not caught and the DB lowered his head and lead with head. Most of the time the "expert announcers" should keep their mouth shut when a foul is called. That was a very good call because it was not a massive hit but was a blow to the head of the reciever.
I agree. But Justin fields runs too much as a QB. If he wants to make it in this league he needs to actually pass. Otherwise he will join the trash heap of “mobile” QB’s. Vick, Vince, and a host of others. No primary running QB has won the SB. Ever. Mahomes is a not a running QB. He’s more of a run and gun.

@@davidroman1654 100% correct. The dude didnt just lead with his helmet against a receiver that was essentially defenseless as he was in the air trying to catch the ball, but he had the back/side of his head to the DB, so wouldn't have known to brace himself, and the DB was literally tracking his fckin head!! If you watch it, you can see the guy adjust his positioning so he could follow the receivers head, which is why he's following the guy to the ground. He just didn't get the in time to make the hit.
Just complete lack of consistency this year. Nothing makes any sense. Needs to be fixed because it makes watching games frustrating rather than enjoyable.

Wild Card referee assignments Browns at Texans: Clay Martin Dolphins at Chiefs: Brad Rogers Steelers at Bills: Carl Cheffers Packers at Cowboys: Ron Torbert Rams at Lions: Craig Wrolstad Eagles at Buccaneers: Adrian Hill The playoff predictions for the Super Bowl referee lays eyes on Bill Vinovich and John Hussey for having the highest scores. However the Super Bowl referee is selected from one that officiates a divisional round game
There are up to 4 games in the divisional round so up to 4 referees will be assigned. Then 2 Conference Championship games so 6 out of the 11 referees remaining will have a opportunity to officiate a game. The other referees include Alex Kemp Alan Eck Bill Vinovich Brad Allen Clete Blakeman John Hussey Land Clark Scott Novak Shawn Hochuli Shawn Smith Tra Blake
The Divisional round referees have been announced. John Hussey @ Texans vs Ravens Alex Kemp @ Packers vs 49ers Bill Vinovich @ Buccaneers vs Lions Shawn Hochuli @ Chiefs vs Bills
Now the Conference Championship assignments go to these referees Shawn Smith: Chiefs @ Ravens Clete Blakeman: Lions @ 49ers Which means Scott Novak, Land Clark, Tra Blake, Brad Allen and Alan Eck did not get an on field postseason game. The Super Bowl referee assignment is going to Bill Vinovich. This will be his 3rd Super Bowl as a referee
some of these are close calls that could go either way but the ones that drive me nuts are when somebody grabs a face mask, you see his head twist and the ref is right there looking at it, and they don't call it. yet they call all these ticky tack calls every week. It's the old thing, "how did you NOT see that ref!" yet they will call some guy for being 1 inch over the line for lining up in the neutral zone, as if that effects anything, or the teensiest tiniest flinch for an offensive false start. He winks and it's false start. I love the line one of these commentators said 'These days the NFL is trying to do everything they can to prevent violent hits" what? So are they trying to not play football? every hit is " violent"
9:43. The ball was clearly short. I know the refs needed to make it up to the lions for the officiating in the cowboys game, but did it have to be against my Vikes? Such an obviously bs call too. Make it up to the Lions by leaning there way on penalties, not on fourth downs when you can visibly see the ball is short of the line to gain.
@@grantgolden2477 Every O-Line has been horrible on holding penalties so for every one Parsons should have gotten, dallas's line got away with one. its a wash if they never call it
6:05 at this angle, it is impossible to tell with 100% certainty that the player is offsides. The only sure way to see if he’s offsides or not is to look straight down the line. It’s also important to remember that the LOS on the screen isn’t the official line, and there are some instances where the ball is behind the line. Same with the referee positioning, it is impossible to tell if they are directly on the LOS without looking over the shoulder of the referee
I have seen a lot of Jonathan Owens doing hits like that on QB it looked like he hit his head . Did they check Fields for a concussion? He didn't look right
The hit was good. He was going in for the hit before the slide. They did check Fields for all of 2 plays then he came back. Didn't look the same the rest of the game though.
Considering the cluster f**k of a season, this weeks reffing actually didn't seem too bad... I mean it wasn't good, but at least by comparison it seemed a bit better. Maybe the demotion due to the fiasco with the Lions actually did something positive...
That hit on fields wasn't a missed call but I see why some may find it controversial. Drop the play speed of the video and watch it frame by frame. Defender started with the dive at the exact same time Fields started his slide. Greed for that extra yard and you give that defender no time to back off.
Yeah, I would agree if they probably wouldn’t call it if it was like machines or something. I just wish there was consistency you when they are “ protecting the quarterback.”
The issue is we've seen QBs protected so much with the exception of Fields. 31 QBs slide like that and it would flagged. They threw more flags for hits on Josh Allen by week 6 than they have for hits on Fields in his career
Maybe it's just me, but this QB slide right before they are about to get hit crap has got to stop. I've seen QBs fake slides, fake running out of bounds, fake dang near about anything that might draw a penalty to get a few more yards and it makes the defense afraid to even touch them.
This season, and the NFL in recent years, in general, is just showing that how badly the referees make costly mistakes that rob the team of their win. The NFL needs some full-time officials!
first clip is just so dirty, i hope the league looks at that player for next season. dude literally just launched himself head first. as a bears fan, GB got sold on that second clip lmfao. even i was saying in the moment that that was garbage
literally by rule it was a legal hit,no contact with neck or head and he led with his shoulder. Was already starting the tackle at the start of the slide. the rules analyst even agreed
@@gavinbailey36 Bro did you watch a different clip? The dude led with his helmet and actively tracked the receivers head as he was falling. You can see where he adjusts and then follows the receivers head down as he was falling to try and get it. He was TRYING to hit him, he just didn't get there in time to actually make the full hit, which is why he barely hit him with his helmet. Not only all of that but the receiver was essentially a defenseless receiver falling to the ground and he had the back/side of his head to the DB so he wouldn't have known it was coming. That was 100% dirty af.
@@undeadarmy19that's not what happened. Fields hesitated at the same time the defender adjusted himself to get the tackle, and then he slid. Fields definitely did that on purpose to generate a penalty
What no one pointed out in the Cowboy's commanders game. Was that the Right tackle and Guard where hitting Micah Parson in the head every play he lined up on them ( well I think every play. Gave up counting after 3 quarters). I also hope the league fines the guy on the tackle on CD Lamb. The one where the guy hits him the helmet. The guy on his back rolls over on his ankles. then gets up by pressing his hand against CD's ankle trying to twist it. Why CD gets up and pushes the guy.
The video is part of a series titled and I quote "NFL Controversial & Horrible Calls". Notice the word CONTROVERSIAL? Not exactly hidden in the fine print. So if you disagree with a call it starts to fit into the definition of the first adjective. ;)
I think the first call was legit. There is 0 reason for that kind of attempted hit. Just because it was weak doesn’t necessarily mean it should be excused.
Agree completely. There was clear indication that he was trying to hit him with his helmet. If it's about player safety, the attempt should be enough to call a penalty.
I def think that first one was a good call. He was leading with his helmet and actively TRYING to hit the other dude in the head. I mean, look at his trajectory, he literally tries to follow the dudes head, but winds up only barely hitting it.
This whole video is why I feel refs and umpires in every pro sports league should be fined a percentage of their pay for just down right bad calls. And it would make them think about a call a little longer than they do now especially if their money is on the line. If everyone else on the field can be fined and is at the very highest level of football then why not hold the refs to the same expectations? You want the best of the best on the field then make them put their money where their mouth is.. and I think that’s fair, cause it’s not easy to make it as a ref onto a pro field so it’s a privilege, and like I said if they have to put their money up if they make a mistake then I’d bet bad calls get cut in half.. idk why this wasent a thing a long time ago it seems completely fair if you ask me.
There should 100% be a way to overturn calls, even after the game. Refs do need to be held MUCH more accountable. Theyre out there affecting people's livelihood everywhere. Not just the players, but the people betting on the games too. I play a lot of disc golf, and while the players do a lot of the reffing themselves, if a player doesn't agree with a call, they're allowed to call a provisional, which allows them to play from both scenarios, keep the score for both on that hole, and later once its reviewed they keep the score that applied to it. Take the Cowboys vs Lions game. They could've let the 2pt conversion stand, then played it out the other way too. Then, it doesn't matter if they make it or not, the Cowboys simply play like they need to go down a kick a FG. If they get it, the 2pt doesn't matter anyways. If they dont get it, you cant go back and say "well we dont know how the game would've ended though" like a lot of Cowboys fans were claiming. Even though the chances of them getting in FG range with the time they had left would've been very slim.
@@undeadarmy19 I agree with what you’re saying, but it’s going to be hard to get everyone on board with letting it stand and playing it out like you said. And it would add a lot of confusion to the game especially for people who are just learning the game, and then you have to decide do they do that at all levels? If not which do they start at? But I get your idea and I agree there needs to be something done, idk if there is a good idea that everyone would be happy with, that’s why I feel the only realistic option is to fine the refs, because no team could say it’s unfair or it favors one side or anything, and in the scenario you explained there would always be someone who’s mad or thinks it’s unfair even tho it isn’t. It’s just hard to get people on board with changing things about the actual game like that, I don’t want you to think I’m saying it wouldn’t work cause I think it would if everyone was on board. But like I was saying no one could say it’s unfair to fine the refs, it dosent interfere with the way the game is played and nothing about the game itself is actually changed. But I know fining the refs won’t be a cure all, they will still have issues with that solution.
What’s funnier to me is when the refs refuse to look at the video replay when they know they were wrong. Like that just adds insult to injury, the refs should say to them “I didn’t see it, so I can’t call it. I will watch closer from now on and I’ll let the other guys know also, but I can’t call a penalty off a replay.” And that would be the end of it.
You missed including the missed overturn on the play the Packers challenged in the Chi-GB.... ball clearly hit the ground without possession and they called it a catch after review...... that was a un-screw-up-able call they got wrong. Plus they missed obvious holding calls and missed a CLEAR punch on #97 for Chicago on a post play scuffle early in the game
@WeberMentzel if they were helping the Bears, why was Owen's allowed to cheapshot Fields with no call? They let both teams hold, they let both teams push and shove after the whistle. Only one team tried to injure the other, and they didn't get punished for it
@@johnstronz4672 fields was a runner, Owen’s started his tackle while he was still a runner. It was close but that’s my take. The “catch” the packers challenged was 100% incomplete, and the Bo Melton TD that got stripped has a very valid argument for being a catch in the end zone. Also the offsides call was a false start by the left tackle 100%. There weren’t many penalties, so less chances to mess it up, but the big calls all went one way.
@@WeberMentzel if he was a runner and slid so late, why was the ball placed 4 or 5 yards behind where the contact happened instead of where the contact happened?
The bills have benefited directly from bad calls. The bills - giants game way back in the season the bills defender basically tackled the receiver before the ball was thrown and no penalty. That won’t them the game. Without that win the bills may not be in the playoffs. The refs absolutely have a negative affect on the entire season. Unbelievable.
you really wanna complain about that, a game the giants botched by failing to execute at the end of the first half, if they kicked a fg then they wouldve just needed a gwfg at the end of game. bro AJ brown got injured fumbling EXACTLY how he fumbled in OT vs the eagles yet that wasnt a fumble, you have no idea how bad the officiating has been against the bills.
so the one play that was shown against the bills with allens hand saved the whole game? as opposed to the blatant PI that ruined a touchdown and bad spotting against the bills that i guess benefited them?
Yeah dont even get me started with that BS lol. The Colts should've been in the playoffs, if it wasn't for that BS PI call at the end of the Browns game. I was so fckin excited when they still stopped them on the 1-yard line for 3 plays. Only for them to finally get it on 4th and goal at the 1. With that win they wouldn't have just been in the playoffs, they would've had the division too I think.
I am so sick of the QB slide. they have all the protection in the world already. Remove the slide and let them know, if you want to run the ball you will be tackled. If you don't want to get hit then dont run or run directly out of bounds. Then lets talk about the 5 yard fake slide because the defense are scared of a penalty.
these refs are so WWE 1 QBs sliding and the defensive player hits them late. no penalty. solution offensive tees off on the defensive player and puts him out of the game. it is chicken shit. mark my words a crazy fan is going to eliminate on of these refs who are not incompetent but only following the script. them what. fans should not take the game so seriously????? just spend untold dollars supporting their team while the NFL treats it like entertainment not sports? all we need it Trump to say the fans should rise up and protect the integrity of the game.
Get rid of this QB slides. They are against the spirit of a runner. And because the QBs wait for the last inch to go down we always get a flag or a hurt QB.
You probably have teams with 3rd string quarter backs and limit QBs to just stay in the pocket. Plus anyone can give themselves up. If a wide receiver gave himself up and you slammed into him that would also be a penalty
@@holymackenaw or hear me out we train defensive players to not lead with their helmets? Not that hard to force a QB to slide. But let's just have every team risk essentially their most important player because defensive players lack self control
Better yet. Just stop running QB’s. The best QB ever in Brady never scrambled. Every one wants to have another Mike Vick I think. But Vick washed out. As did others.
brady scrambled, he had over 1000 career rushing yards, he wasnt an elite runner but to say that guy couldnt scramble is untrue, he just often hit the quick hot route or a rb early when he knew exactly how that receiver would gash a defense.
