NHL Salt Lake City Team Design Contest Winner Announced! 

Nine months later and the Coyotes are moving to Salt Lake. Video has aged like fine wine.

The fact that the logo of the winner glows under UV light is such an intelligent decision based on the biology of actual scorpions. Great job!

I honestly liked the Yeti concept more than the Scorpions concept, and the fact that it’s hand drawn is impressive. The color purple is well known within the state of Utah and the concept reminds me of the 1997 Utah Jazz jerseys, which is really cool. I love the alternate logo that would go on the shoulder patch. This is all my opinion but I think the Yeti concept should’ve won 1st place.

I love the Scorpions for the Arizona Coyotes tie in. "Scorpions" was 2nd place in the original "name the Phoenix hockey team" contest that "Coyotes" won. The moment you pulled up the design I thought, "that will be my pick for the winner..." Sure enough, it was, and then it was yours too! I can't believe I got 5th either! I fully agree the name doesn't roll off the tongue. Way more praise for the design than I expected! Thank you for the feedback!

The Utah Yeti is awesome. It is rough for sure but with a touch up it would be an awesome Jersey. I also love the colors of the Utah Elk(red/copper).

Thanks Neil! I narrowed down the name to the Scorpions from a list that included names like Raptors, Saints, Swarm, Sting/Stingers and Seagulls. It's interesting that other people came up with the same names but ultimately chose Scorpions because it really doesn't exist any where else in pro sports. I made sketches for all these names but Scorpions came together naturally. In terms of the UV glow of the jersey, I thought it would be a cool idea for warm-up or after a goal. Also, using UV lights over the crowd would be cool and intimating to see a bunch of glowing scorpions staring back at the visiting team.

Finally something positive about the whole situation. Thank you. But yeah, bad ownership forced the relocation. No wonder betman had to get so hands on. Previous ownership ran that franchise into the ground. Poor communication. No long term business plan.

I love all the references to the Utah State flag and the Salt Lake City flag is great. I love teams that incorporate local elements like that.

Utahn here. Wish I'd known about this contest, I would've loved to take part. Some context for a few of the design choices. Bee themes: Utah is known as the "Beehive State" so there's no surprise the idea seeped into a lot of the designs. Vipers: The Salt Lake Golden Eagles moved to Detroit in 1994 to become the Detroit Vipers, so this brings it full circle in a sense. There should have been more green: The most iconic look of the Salt Lake Golden Eagles was based on a Kelly Green foundation. 16:43: That shoulder patch is based on the new state flag, which could do the branding work for any potential Utah team by itself. Utah Yeti: DEEP roots in the late 90s Jazz branding here. I like it. I took my own crack at it a few years ago in a sort of front office thought experiment with the "Utah Eagles", and while the color scheme didn't quite work, I minimalized it in a later reprisal to a simpler black/white/yellow scheme (to match the Jazz of today) that ended up working really well, then implemented the Kelly Green for the 3rds. I know it wouldn't have qualified for this contest since it was entirely constructed with the design tools in EA NHL, but I'm still pretty proud of it. i made a design in NHL 23, i named them the utah stingers. a bit of a double entendre, as a stinger is on a bee, utah is known as the beehive state, but also northern utah is really known for their air force base, and there is a military plane called the FIM-92 stinger. the colors would’ve been the royal blue and gold that the air force uses.

All the Bee names legit has sold me on a team there being named the Stingers. Each game will begin with a live-reading of the Bee Movie Script.

Now that it’s seemingly inevitable that the Yotes are relocating, the Elk is the one I am REALLY hoping gets the nod! It goes so hard for the environment of Utah, and the people of Salt Lake City IMO would absolutely get hype for a team with that identity!

Best one is the Salt Lake Stingers at 16:45 for my vote.

I'm one minute in the video and the only thing I can think about is the Neil wearing a LA hat with an Arizona jersey.

The fact that a slideshow was needed shows how hard it musta been to narrow it down. Wish i could have participated but im working on my first full 32 team JERSEY set (remember i only did the two IndyCar and the Stadium Series only had a few jerseys) for future release. Note on that. To those who come up with ideas for all 32 teams on a regular basis especially Detroit. I have even more respect for y'all now because i am struggling after Detroit and 12 other teams.

I had an idea for a design and pleased that some of these for Stingers came very close to what I had in mind.

Utah Yeti logo has been done. The old Kootenay Ice WHL team logo.

Really liked the Yeti concept. What you said was bang on, that is one of the best I’ve ever seen. It also screams 90s to me which I love!

That 2nd place Utah Yeti design is incredible. I so hope that the team decides to do something similar. But given how Ryan Smith branded the Jazz, I really doubt they will do something that cool.

Utah Yeti is easily the best team, it’s unique it matches the state, the weather, great for merchandising. I could see the Utah Yeti becoming a real thing.

Swarm would be a perfect name for the Salt Lake City/Utah team. I mean, a hard working collective, united as one etc...They can do so much from a marketing standpoint for both the team, the fans, the arena... yeah, pretty much anything.

Skull wearing a cowboy hat?!? Common, that rules. Also: Monster and Pronghorns. A bit too much colour in the shirt, yes, but the monster logo is unique and has a character to it and a nice outline. The Pronghorn logo is brilliant! Can't believe it wasn't near top just for that alone. I seldom see a completely new design language in a logo. How rare is that? Rivals the best NHL logos.

Agree with the Scorpions as the top jersey. Also liked Yeti, and the Stinger jersey with the dark purple and gold. Utah Bobcats is a good name, though logo needed some work. Think the ownership will include the entire state in the team name. Utah Scorpions still works. Vipers is another good name. Lot of good entries. Congrats to all for a job well done

That Serpents logo is creative - it has more than just an "S", it has an S and L and then the snake right below it Yeti was definitely the best imo!

The Yeti colors look like the Utah Jazz jerseys back in the Malone/,Stockton days... Only problem is the North American Bigfoot is called Sasquatch from the Native Americans - Yeti is a name from Nepal.

In thinking about it a “stinger”or “swarm” with a bee hive somewhere in the logo would play very well with the community in SLC. The Beehive house was Brigham Young’s residence as the Governor of the Utah territory and head of the Mormon church. It’s an interesting reference for the area.

Congrats to the winner! Mine is the Utah Raptors at 36:47 and I acknowledge that there is a pro team called the Raptors, but I went for totally different branding. Imo, Toronto and Utah are far enough away that nobody would get confused! (Does anybody every confuse the Sacramento kings with the LA kings?). It would have been nice to make the top 20 considering my jersey made the thumbnail!

Need to be careful with the Swarm idea. The NLL has a team called the Georgia Swarm, and this could be a copyright infringement if this was to be put into action. Great video!

Mine is the Sasquatch 35:06. I think I did ok 👍 but maybe I went a little too Avalanche on this one but next Competition I’ll come up with something really nice.

Unfortunately I was unable to enter this contest… life and work got in the way. I wish I’ve found time to. My favorite concept is Salt Lake Swarm by B.W.Hockey. All in all every concept was good!

Im gonna cry if my Coyotes move. I'll never forget when they let us submit nicknames when they moved from Winnipeg. I voted for Scorpions in honor of when Michael Jordan played baseball for the Scottsdale Scorpions minor league team...

Both 1 and 2 - Scorpions and Yeti, are both taken from Utah Jazz colors. Both of those color patterns were used by the Utah Jazz over the years. Jazz purple logo even included mountain range.

That Scorpions one is siiiiiiiiiiiiiiick, and the color scheme fits Utah so well. Maybe a bit darker red, but still. That is such a disgustingly good brand, and I'm sad that we won't get it, cause I'd buy that jersey in a *HARTBEAT*

That simpler first Stingers design was awesome, logo and colors were great. The Utah Yeti as well would be amazing as well. Reminds me of the old Utah Jazz jerseys.

the drawn Elk one has great design with the style of letters & words, but that logo surrounded in white would save the contrast in the main jersey colour, but it looks good for a simple drawing & colouring.

The SLC Scorpions would be awesome! That kit is so well done. There used to be an CHL team that played in Albuquerque called the New Mexico Scorpions. Living in southwest Colorado, it was always a blast to go watch the eagles play there (shorter drive too). Unfortunately they folded in 2009 so it would be great to see some scorpions in the hockey world again.

I wish I knew about this earlier. I think the Salt Lake Osmonds would be a hit.

Suggestion for name ideas. 1 Two-syllable like Wham-Bam or one-syllable like Boom 2 No "S" at the end 3 Regional, as in, has ties to the state 4 drop the usual bird, cat, dog names 5 Utah over Salt Lake for being shorter and more inclusive 6 makes for a catchy logo 7 BE UNIQUE!!

The Utah Yeti will be an epic name and jersey design has incredible potential! It is relatable to a winter fierce creature and rolls off the tongue so smoothly, I hope this will be the name given for this franchise.

Utah yeti reminds me of the Kootney ICE

My two problems with the stingers/bee concept: 1. Utah already has a baseball team named the Salt Lake City Bees 2. We already have enough black and yellow colored teams and uniforms in the NHL (Which is why I favor a color scheme like this more 18:19 )

The "Scorpions" concept was my favorite a well and there were some very good submissions too!

Thank you, I really enjoyed watching this! I do have to put in my 2 cents. I really like most of the designs and colors. As you say there are many talented people that have contributed! But, mostly, I don't like the names. One has to understand a little history of sports in Utah! The Bees and Bee themed names have traditionally been used by our Pacific Coast League baseball teams, other that a period when they were the named "The Gulls" and when they were a Pioneer league team named "The Trappers" (partially owned by Bill Murray). They were for a time names "The Buzz" and then "The Stingers" before finally getting the Bees name back. I don't like the name Stingers because we often referred to them as ''the Stinkers" because they were sometimes not so good! Ice Hockey has history in Utah and for a long time we had the IHL "Golden Eagles" and now the ECHL "Utah Grizzlies". Since the Golden Eagle is the Utah State Bird of prey, I think we need to return Ice Hockey in Utah to the Salt Lake or Utah Golden Eagles. They had the coolest Red, white and Gold uniforms. Look up Dan Plante's Salt Lake Golden Eagle's Jersey!

What about Salt Lake City Scarabs or Salt Lake City Sphinx. You could take advantage of Egyptian style themes.

What's interesting is the Utah team will not be keeping the Coyotes/Jets 1.0 franchise's history but will bet treated like an expansion team without being an actual expansion team. The Arizona Coyotes are considered an "inactive franchise" and if they can get an arena built within 5 years, they will be re-activated.

I like the vibe and the concept behind this contest, very innovative. All the designs are really good, they show the creators are passionate, with a vested interest in what they are doing. All good things come from that freedom of expression. For my money 'the Utah Bobcats' take the prize.

SLC should do the Salt Lake City Skinwalkers, though i see them using Utah, not SLC. Due to PC reasons they cant use Skinwalkers but maybe Spirit?

Neil, I have to respectfully disagree with you because I do think that the Arizona Coyotes are going to move out of town. The mostly likely scenario would be for them to move to Houston and become an in-state rival for the Dallas Stars.

I have only one issue with the Salt Lake Union: the acronym for the salt lake Union team store (Same issue as the south lake Union- streetcar it’s a streetcar not a trolley)
