The first time I heard that “Hand of God” vocal bit, I knew I’d be hearing Melon sing it

How is Nick Cave still capable of putting out amazing music this far in his career? That's sum legend type shit, sum GOAT activity.

The assassination of Jesse James by the coward robert Ford is still my favorite score ever and in general a criminally underrated film.

Holy fuck the title track and balcony man are gorgeous. Cave leaning into his falsetto goes right to the feelsy place. This album feels to me like the kind of project cave and ellis have done before, where they retreat from the bad seeds brand for a bit to do something that might feel too weird or out of left field or maybe even a little regressive to go in the bad seeds catalogue, and just do whatever they want. Those projects are always gorgeous, see also grinderman.

I want to take Anthony seriously despite him calling the amazing Push The Sky Away a slog. Carnage is a strong 8 though. So I guess he's half right

The fact that Cave has put out albums as amazing and as innovative as Push The Sky Away, Skeleton Tree, Ghosteen, and now Carnage ... 40 years into his career ... is truly astounding. There’s no doubt that artists like Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, and Neil Young have put out excellent modern albums; and Bowie’s ‘BlackStar’ In particular-is a masterpiece. But I truly believe that Skeleton Tree and Ghosteen are two of the Greatest, most powerful, and most flawless albums that I have ever heard. And not only are they incredible for how great the actual music is ... They epitomize what Art is supposed to accomplish; Skeleton Tree and Ghosteen were an outlet for an absolutely horrific tragedy that Cave had to go through. And when you listen to the albums, you are put into that world and are plunged into despair. But, by the end of the albums, you actually feel better than you did before you listened to them. To me, that’s what Art is supposed to be about. Finding a way to turn tragedy - into something beautiful. And by doing that, you are actually able to make sense of all the tragedy we endure as humans. I’ve only listened to Carnage once, but I have a strong feeling that I’m going to end up viewing it in the same league as Cave’s last 3 albums.

Lets argue: dirty three’s horse stories is underrated classic

This is my first Nick Cave album I have been exposed to. Really dug it. I do like the harder stuff I've heard he's known for so might go to The Birthday Party days and then work my way from there.

Thought this was a collaborative album between Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, the writer. Kinda relieved. That dude is a creep.

First thing I thought of when I heard Hand of God was Anthony facetiously going “hand of god, hand of god.” Was not disappointed.

Now Carnage should release an album called Nick Cave & Warren Ellis

I agree with a lot of this. I wonder if the more raw, song-focused approach was a function of them recording the record during lockdown and maybe more piecemeal than what they were accustomed to. It seems that the full Bad Seeds records are worked up a lot with the entire band in a room and while the main ideas typically come from Cave and Ellis, the other players have a more subtle influence on the overall sound. At the same time, I do kind of hope this record is a transition to a return to the Bad Seeds' rowdier side, possibly with a more experimental bent to it. I loved the last three records, but they stand pretty well on their own. Doesn't seem like there's much of a need to go any further down that road. Of course at the end of the day, I'd trust these guys instincts above all else. I'm sure the next Bad Seeds record will blow our minds like they all have.

Another masterpiece worthy of being among the other genius of this priceless CROONER, which should only be revered after more than 40 years, giving us to drink his magic concoction in constant evolution and revolutionizing the musical devices of all living beings, both for savvy as well as lay people with minimal musical fiber and a bit of poetic understanding. By definition, a genius is one who takes nothingness to turn it into something admirable, capable of changing the environment and our lives in incredible ways and that in the future, make of it a sanctuary like an effigy, to be able to consecrate, this divine envoy , for the rest of time.

Definitely on the same page here for this album. I differ with you on Push the Sky Away in that it's one of my favorite albums of all time, Cave or otherwise. Skeleton Tree and Ghosteen are both lovely with some really standout tracks, but ultimately a bit monotonous, especially the latter. Carnage is a breath of fresh air in its energy and diversity of tone!

i love every bad seeds album and phase, but my favorite is clearly trilogy phase. i'm so happy that he's still over with the sound yet. carnage is fantastic.

I really feel like they need to do Grinderman 3. There's cobwebs that need'a blowin' I reckon.

You only like this album because the emotionally potent and timely Carnage finds Nick Cave and Warren Ellis letting loose with the aesthetic they forged on the previous Bad Seeds trilogy.

The first half of this album is STRONG. So strong that I was anticipating giving this album a 10/10. I kept thinking "This is too good to be true"; and so it was. Then the second half happened and it was a major let down. It's more sleepy ambient music that does nothing for me in terms of being engaging. Albuquerque was a nice slower detour after the immediacy of the first half but the album didn't pick up again in terms of energy and by the end I was left feeling really disappointed. Had the 2nd half been more immediate, exciting and ambitious as the first half, you were looking at a 9.7 to a 10 from me. What a tragedy... Hand of God, Old Time, Carnage, White Elephant. SCORE: 8.0/10

I love Nick's music and I wanted to listen to this record once it came out, but for some reason it made me feel weirdly uncomfortable and anxious. I had to stop listening to it halfway through because I was feeling uneasy. I don't remember the last time I experienced something like that

Melon is somehow surprised that this a NC/WE branded project? How many soundtracks now? The last 3 Bad Seeds records were basically this formula with the other Seeds as session guys. This album is so good. Since Let Love In there have been a few less than great records. Nocturama/Boatman/ghosteen I'm looking at you. Otherwise the releases to include the Soundtracks, Grinderman, and now Carnage are truly a fine older catalog. Carnage took me by surprise. Really solid record.

When I saw Albuquerque was on the tracklist I was kinda hoping it was a cover of the Weird Al magnum opus track but in the style of "The Curse of Milhaven". Solid album.
