Francis Casey "Niño" Alcantara is a world-class Filipino tennis player, and this is his story. Nico Bolzico is learning the sport from one of the best in the Philippines on this pilot episode of Make it Hurt. Niño’s origin story is similar to many aspiring homegrown athletes who dreamt of making it to number one in the world. Since tennis is not as popular as boxing or basketball in the country, Niño climbed his way up the ranks through the help of private sponsors and the support of his family. His sheer grit and determination is helping pave the way for Philippine tennis, drawing more attention to the sport and attracting more support for up and coming tennis players in the country. Watch the full video to see Nico and Niño have the match of a lifetime!

I couldn’t agree more, as Filipino living in Australia I could relate to this. I appreciate your enthusiasm to give this opportunity to broaden their knowledge and help pinoy’s to reach their full potentials. 🎉

When we lived in Manila for 2years, my husband easily found a lot of FilipinoTennis players to play with but mostly they are matured man who plays in Clubhouse. Then he got turned off by how the Clubhouse man treat the ballboys. We started looking for more tennis players and found younger man and woman who does tournaments that is really competitive and nice. Tennis is active in Manila ... just not loud like other sports.

When I was in college back in 2000, that was also one of my dilemma. Most of the players were older, and the location of tennis court were usually too far from my dorm. Most of my friends or the people around me weren't into tennis or sports, so I hardly got to play. Then, one day, my friend's younger brother borrowed all my tennis racket and didn't return it. Then life got so busy. I never had the chance to find anyone to play with after that. I still miss it. But I think my joints won't agree with the sport anymore.

Tennis helped strengthen my weak immune system when I was young. And it kept me fit without even knowing because I enjoyed it too much. It's sad that around college, it wasn't easy to find an accessible tennis court where we could play. Location is usually too far, and knowing only a few people who like the sport made it harder to schedule to meet-up and play. Nowadays, I don't get to play anymore, so I just catchup on tournaments like US Open, Wimbledon, Australian Open, etc. I hope our local tennis team will continue to grow and the best will get to move up the ranks and have that chance to play and win against the top players from around the world.

Lovely to see how Filipino athletes, like in this case, are featured to showcase their achievements in the sport they are good at. In tennis, it is true that we have promising players all over the country but lack exposure. We should have a tennis academy. I have played tennis myself since the 1990s but am not a professional player. I just play for fun. I love the game. And wish to see more Filipinos (full/or half-blooded) excel. Cheers

It’s a realistic Goal to Win One point against a Professional. I can’t watch 18 mins of video but I like the concept of your Channel. Keep it up. When I come to Manila perhaps you can show me where to play Padel,

Tennis is technically the most complicated and demanding sport, top players are a mix of triathletes, technical wizards and mentalists. Nico underestimated Tennis as Paddle is easier but closer to pickleball where Tennis is at the opposite in extremes. Touch tennis is another sport that is closer to the Tennis spectrum in difficulty but still easier and more accessible than Paddle for many as Tennis balls and equipment is still too expensive for low income earners.

Nino Alcantara is too ripe for doubles. He needs more travel and nutrition sponsors to transition his game into singles. Just one singles tournament (250, 500, 1000 or maybe 2000). Just one singles trophy. And Nino Alcantara will be an icon in Philippine tennis.
