Clive Barker is one of the greatest minds in all of horror. His originality and love for the macabre have always made him stand out in the genre. So imagine hiring him to create a wonderfully unique monster film, only to take it away from him and change it to a by the numbers slasher film. We're diving deep into all of it as we cover, "Nightbreed."
WATCH OR OWN THE FILM HERE: amzn.to/3I5pyFm
Written, Narrated and Edited by Tyler Nichols
Produced by John Fallon and Tyler Nichols
Executive Producer by Berge Garabedian
SERIES SYNOPSIS: Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs. Either way, we have to ask: WTF Happened To This Horror Movie?

I wrote a review of Nightbreed for Fangoria. It didn't make publication. However, a few weeks later I received a letter from England. Clive Barker loved my review and thanked me for the kind words about being murdered by the Hollywood machine.

Nightbreed is a classic. Great score, practical effects and bizarre characters especially the hero villain Decker that should of defentley returned in a sequel especially considering how the film ends? The 25th Anniversary Edition is awesome. "More monsters!" Additional footage as meant to be, The actual ending as Clive Barker intended. Brilliant. The real Nightbreed. Clive was so excited that original footage was able to be found. Forget the Hollywood ending. Watch this remastered, correct version of events as meant to be and story to be told. Feel the madness, feel the love, flow with transformations of monsters. It was a life.

I'm personally glad that there was never a second movie, films in general and especially in the Horror genre, try to show everything and answer every question far too often and no mystery or curiosity is left to the audience. For me most Horror films take a turn for the worse when they show the full creature or monster and try to hard to explain the mystery behind it. its okay to be left wanting answers ! Its what keeps that love of a movie alive for me.

This is one of my all-time favorite films. I loved the original version back in the day when it first hit the video rental stores. Sadly, I didn't get to see it at the theater. I knew something was missing when I first watched it and longed to see more of Midian and its wonderful inhabitants, who were obviously not the monsters they were made out to be. I absolutely love Clive Barker and have followed up on his search for the missing Nightbreed footage for decades. I've seen the movie more times than I can count and have read Cabal almost as much. When Barker finally found the missing footage, I was overjoyed for him, those who worked on the film, and all of its fans. I have cherished every second of footage released, whether it's polished or not. Some of the Nightbreed that he created are just absolutely exquisite, magical beings. The worlds and those living in them that he creates are like nothing else. The man is a genius. ❤

The Ultimate Cabal Cut (3hr 19m) can be found on Internet Archive. The restored scenes are (as is typical in cases like this) transferred from video, by the look of it, and don't have the best audio, but it is the most complete version of the film it is possible to watch, and it is so much more coherent, easy to follow and true to the original vision for the movie. We get to see many more Nightbreed which really makes it a hit for me.

The thing that has always left a sour taste with me as far as Nightbreed is concerned is the fact that it doesn't really "end". It's definitely prepped for more. And I know it didn't perform well, so there was never going to be a sequel. And the comic kind of took off where the movie left off and moved it along. But this could have been a good series if not for studio interference. But, the same can be said for a lot of films of that era. For some reason, the early 90's are full of examples of where movies are hacked to pieces by studios and end up being terrible. Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3, Nightbreed, Highlander 2, etc. Although, let's be honest, ANY cut of Highlander 2 was going to fail. Every version I've seen has sucked. Just some less than others.
@ketchupkatsup9805

Barker was actually going to write a trilogy and finish off the story in book form, but was so pissed off over what the studio did to the film he just moved on from the whole idea, so it never got finished sadly.

i'm wondering "what became of Clive barker?!" one best selling novel after another, three successful well respected "cult" films directed by the man himself, art works and comic books and games, but still not one of his major novels has been translated into a film or better still, a mini series. WeaveWolrd, Imajica, The Great and Secret Show, Coldheart Canyon (amongst others) would be perfect for what has become the definitive way to show these stories to the rest of the world (whether they've read the books or not)...the limited series. that being 6 to 12 episodes. It seems that the equally brilliant Neil Gaiman has achieved, what should have been equally happening with Barker's career, but what happened? I'd heard many years ago that Barker did a huge deal with Disney (of all folks) that was going to include everything from productions to theme park rides. Did they buy all his work and then just bury it?. You'd think by now that a wonderful novella like "The Thief of Always" (to Barker what "Coraline" and "The Ocean at the End of the Lane" is to Gaiman) would already be a movie, but still...nothing. Who has the rights to Barker's work and why is it not being translated into other media?
@cicolasnage5684
@cicolasnage5684 2 года назад
Sadly Barker is one of those writers that could not shake off being the “horror guy” he wrote romance novels, Hollywood ghost stories and magic realism and though they were success they never reached superstar levels his earlier novels garnered. Several of his works were translated to film but in my personal opinion they were not very well translated and lacked the great imagery that barker so greatly put to paper. On the graphic art side of things his success with comic was touch and go, he had his own imprint with marvel comics in the early 90s but sadly as imaginative as they were they failed to catch on, his books of blood stories were adapted and retained the dread from the original prose and were pretty successful. Naturally hellraiser had several series of comics over the years. There were other adaptations as well, the deal with Disney was in 1999-2000 and it was for what would become his abarat children’s books that were going to be made in addition to the thief of always. It was a pretty major deal at the time with barker making a lot of money but Disney being Disney and not understanding the subtlety and the macabre and the strange ideas barker put forward abandoned the project all together. Barker still published the books though, nowadays Barker doesn’t have a lot of output besides his art books from specialty presses and as not as prolific as he was due to his poor health after the result of his trauma at the dentist, bottom line though barker just isn’t a bankable name as Neil Gaiman was. In the 80s and early 90s yes but nowadays besides a hardcore fan base Clive Barker is kind of all but forgotten which is really sad being he is such a creative individual. The star that shines the brightest burns the fastest

His writing went downhill at the peak of his popularity. I wonder if Hollywood helped ruin him the same way it has many great writers. That said he is a legend, but has also been a shadow of his former self for almost 3 decades. I still love Clive but the cutoff point for me seems to be the early 90's and I find most of his work after that period to be lazy and desperate.

I watched it back in the day and understood the monsters as good guys or misunderstood. Did not mind the slasher part.

I loved the original version when it came out and also understood that the monsters were the protagonists of the film. I always wanted to see more of them and their world and felt like something was missing. Then, I found out what the studio did to the film. I've been obsessed with this film for 30 years and am so happy that Clive Barker finally found much of his lost footage so that a more complete, faithful story to his vision could be released.

One of my favorite movies of all time. Love both the theatrical and director's cut. Saw the original on vhs as a kid. Was probably too young for it at the time, but still i loved it. Saw it as an X-Men horror movie. I adore this film.

@@kristinakaminskas5135 Yeah it's crazy to me that Clive Barker hasn't managed to get the Nightbreed tv series off the ground. In recent years i've seen more and more people talking about it. It clearly has a fanbase ready for more.

Perfect as a Universal Studios HHN House/Scarezone. Would likely never happen unless there is a remake but I can imagine a berserker hoard chasing people through a graveyard leading to a Midian house.

I actually tried watching this movie recently and I absolutely did not understand it and could not get into it and I love tons of weird movies and horror. I wonder how I would feel about it if I saw it how it was meant to be seen.

I remember seeing this movie when I was young, I thought it was interesting when the main character died he went to a different afterlife. I remember the protagonist was "judged" and one female monster mentioning to another that she dreamt of the protagonist. I thought it was cool there was a halloweentown like afterlife
