In addition to being a great singer, Tarja is a sweet and humble person. You can see this in the way she has always connected with fans and interviewers in general. She also demonstrates this in small acts. For example, in this documentary Tarja arranges her own clothes for the shows. She ironed her own dress. A diva, in a bad sense, would not admit to doing this kind of domestic chore. The interview Tarja gave after being fired is heartbreaking.
I agree. And she had to struggle to even have the bloody iron avalable backstage! With a little more competent manager and a tiny bit of good will, she wouldn't have had to hire her husband to take care of such things. Then she gets called a diva!

And BINGO, at 31:20, one of the main points of friction between Tarja and the band. To do her best performance , she needed a lot of personal space and private time. As a female she wanted physical privacy away from the guys. And the guys are living in each other's back pockets, on top of each other. Zero privacy. And let's face it, they can get crude and rough. It never occurred to them that as a female, Tarja had different needs. She felt isolated and unheard. Her husband saw an opening there and stepped in as her protector. Which in the long run didn't help at all.
My thoughts exactly. Actually after this my respect for Marcello grew. Also felt bad and sad for Tarja for having to put up with the sometimes disgusting behaviour. However I believe that in the long run the guys have learned stg. I do not thing that Tuomas would make Johanna go through that ordeal.

Getting solidly drunk, being proper young tear aways, causing trouble. Mad, bad and dangerous to know. But that's how young rock and rolly guys are. Zero grasp on the niceties of civilized behavior. Tarja had done some proper classical training, she was a YOUNG LADY. She was raised with MANNERS. Plus, with her method of performing, she needed to be treated like a Dresden China doll. She needed privacy to pull herself together and warm up. She needed privacy on the road. She needed her own space, her own room. Some personal safety. The guys....Nope. They just couldn't see that Tarja didn't like being treated like a fellow drunken lout. After years of being mistreated, I'm not surprise that she tumbled for the first guy to treat her with some common courtesy.

And I hope that the rest would do the same, simply because Finnish men and alcohol is a bad combination. This has been a truly eye opening document. So thank you Just Jen for doing it! Somehow I understand Tarja better now. Floor has a totally different physique from Tarja and Anette that makes her more resilient. And it seems that the touring schedule is now more humane.

And the thing is like you said:Privacy for the rehearsal, opening voice and " to pull herself together." It's not Tarja being a diva thing, which she isn't but it is to do with the fact that she is, indeed a soprano, even singing operas and she takes that seriously.So if that is seen as a diva behaviour, I don't care.A professional has to do what professional has to do.And I think that is where a young metal band life style and opera-soprano singer life style crashed.One of the things that maybe caused problems. I think Floor can handle the guys, as she is different kind of singer and also they all are older and wiser.Lessons learned.Things have settled down.People are happier.Tarja was leaving the band anyway, it's understandable that she would want her own career and they all have their projects besides Nightwish nowadays.It's just the way that it happened that is sad.I wish the door would be open for reconciliation (?) but Tarja and Tuomas were so hurt in the end that this is one of those things that better leave it be.And so it has been since 2005.
They always tried to accommodate Tarja's female needs as much as possible. In the early days of doing clubs it wasn't always possible to have a completely separate area for her. But according to he guys she could get as bawd and rowdy as any of them with a few wines in her.
The doc is so loaded. The band's forced smiles. Tuomas completely checked out. Marcello physically putting himself between Tarja and the band. The authorised biography 'Once Upon a Nightwish' is essential reading for any fan. Granted, it is heavily skewed in favour of the rest of the band, but it does seem to paint an honest portrait of Marcello's role in the disintegration of the relationship between Tarja and the Nightwish camp. The book claims that no matter what money sum was offered to the band for a gig Marcello would always insist on 20% more. So the Nightwish management just started giving him the quote that was 20% LESS than what they got so he would agree to the gig. Tuomas made these feelings very well made in the song 'Master Passion Greed'. And Tuomas explained that they made the letter public so that the fans would know exactly what was going on and it would stop the media from just printing a bunch of lies and speculation.
If you haven't already, I recommend you read the biography "Once Upon A Nightwish" It's a fascinating book that tells the story of the band's very beggings right up until Tarja's dismissal from the band.

Can I just make an observation here? It's been said/written that Tuomas composed for Tarja's vocal style and range. Thinking about that and the powerful delivery she gives in live performances it was always going to be a hard call for future singers to measure up. Annette came into NW with a very different sound, yet performed all the loved/revered songs the fans adored to the best of her ability...for that she must be acknowledged. Floor arrived and put her own magic to the songs and performed brilliantly...still does. I can't compare the ladies...they all joined and not only took on a massive task to recreate the magical compositions of Tuomas but also add their own personal flair to each song. They should be appreciated and admired for the momentous effort that took/takes and commend their individual bodies of work within the most fantastic band in the world! Can't compare the incomparable.
I loved the Anette albums. In fact 'Dark Passion Play' is my favourite Nightwish album. She's an incredible singer in her own right. She may not have been suited to a lot of the older material, but she sang her ass off on those records. Her vocal on 'For The Heart I Once Had' is just jaw-dropping. I'd like to see Floor do it some time.
@Just Jen did just see that both conserts Lowlands 2005 and The Wishes to Eternity if you wanna react to them. Lowlands is almost the same songs as End of an era, And she is more healthy so her voice is better and more powerful
I don’t judge Tuomas for doing what he thought was best for the band, but l don’t think it should have been an open letter. It should have been done privately between the band and Tarja, and then release a statement to the fans, of their decision. Then maybe a reunion, at some point, could have been possible. I don’t blame Tarja for wanting to make a name for herself, she’s amazing, and l don’t blame her husband for supporting her and helping her achieve her dreams. In the end, both bands are thriving. Nightwish has an amazing singer, the wonderful Floor Jansen, and Tarja is doing her thing and killing it! ❤️ You should checkout Tarja’s press conference, after her dismissal, to see just how heartbroken she was. She’s absolutely not a “Diva”. She also wrote an ‘open letter’ response to the band. Check it all out, if you want to get both sides of the story.
I think you’re right. That letter should’ve been kept between them. I feel the same way, I haven’t read that letter yet. But we will be reading it on my Nightwish Sunday stream. I believe we will get to it this Sunday.

You should never do this with an open letter, just do it in private. You can not expect that a person stays allways the same as a teenager for ever. She was married, her priorities changes, that is life.
I don't think it had so much to do with her being married, IMO.It had to do with that guys in the band couldn't understand what their only female member needed.Tarja struggled to have her basic needs met at the tour.Everyone else in the band had help.Each member had technical crew/ assistant or whatever to take care of things for them so that the said member could focus to do their thing for the show.For example their instruments were properly taken care of and on stage in time.What did a singer need?A microphone!Right??!!Tarja didn't have anybody.After firing she did held 90 minutes long press conference where she explained her POV. on several things. It was just basic needs at the tour: Her own dressing room for rehearsing, changing clothes, opening voice, for privacy etc.She liked to iron her clothes but there was no equipments to do that.All those things that I bet Floor nowadays has if she needs them.Basic stuff that were forgotten or didn't exist or were last minutes thoughts for Tarja.Hence I'm questioning also band's manager's competency at that time.Also she felt lonely and misheard.She is classical singer, a soprano, so she works little different in that perspective too,She has her own methods to get ready for the show. Also the band's touring schedule was BRUTAL for a soprano, she felt exhausted.Also there was some other UNFORTUNATE things that happened for her but I'm just mentioning a few. Guys were living a rockn' roll life with whatever social skills and understanding of females they had at that time.They didn't need as much privacy, I guess.Maybe this all led to the thing that Tarja had to hire her husband as her manager to run things for her, making sure there was a dressing room etc.The rest of the band didn't like her husband and I'm sure they had their reasons.Tuomas was very angry and as we know shit hit the fan like never before in NW's history and hopefully never does again. Tarja put up with A LOT OF shit.But she loved their music that why she did it.She was leaving a band anyway in future.She wanted a solo career.So she wasn't going to be permanent member anyway.Members tend to come and go in a bands.They have individual needs. Keep in mind this was A LONG time ago.Things have changed since.But it really all comes down to basic communication, respecting your band mate and it's obvious nobody in the band asked Tarja:" How's the heart?" like they do nowadays.Hehe! Anyway: Tuomas has said that if Floor ever leaves NW that'll be the end of the band.That's sensitive, introvert musical genius talking, IMO.So I bet they listen better her needs and wishes.Also people are more mature and times have changed in general.It was a major screw up from NW's part, IMO. Time is merciful in this case, I'm sorry Tarja had to take that hit back then.I'm also really glad that Floor is now the singer.She can stand her ground in the band, things have settled down.And I know Tarja agrees that Floor is lovely.This band has SURVIVED AND THRIVED.
hi i am at least 2 month late i was there for this livestream and other end of an era reactions i wanted to watch this at least 3 or more times to confirm just notcied that Tuomas sings along with the lead singer but in this last consert he did sing but only with Marco when Tarja sang he kept his mouth closed and there is an overall disconnect from the boys and Tarja she loved / still loves fans and that was her focus

I was watching this stream.I was afraid that when Jen started calling Tarja's husband names that it's going to go trashing Tarja next.Luckily that didn't happen.Also I don't see how Tarja's husband should have enjoyed the foreskin joke.That was tasteless.This was uncomfortable to watch at some points for obvious reasons.Seems to me that the guys didn't quite understood Tarja's needs at the time and added to that they didn't like her husband.Recipe for disaster.I also didn't understand why Marcelo had to be there in the first place and he may have been the master passion greed but he is still by her side +20 years later so he obviously has her best interest in mind.But I don't think he should have been involved in Nightwish business anyway at that time. Some say Tarja is a diva.She's anything but from all I've seen about her.The press conference after the firing was heartbreaking.I hated them all for being such cowards and back stabbing her the way they did. I agree with many of your points. Why should he think the forskin joke funny? Its a sex joke on his wife, at their expense. Does not make him a narcisist for that. Also I think People need context. We see in the video how many of the fans are VERY touchy and invade their private space repeatedly, one fan grabbing Marcos beard even. That is mild campared to what Tarja was exposed to. She was sexually assaulted on stege by a fan one time , her current husband was the guy that came to her rescue, and he and Tarja did not know each other by that time. In addition, she would often be grouped. Thus, him doing his job as her manager and stickning by her side, also as a protective husband is not strange at all. We see Ewo, the guys' manager also present thoughout.

There are two sides to every story, and this documentary is recorded and edited from one, as was the Open Letter. Watching the stream it was easy however to see that you watched it with a critcal lense on Marcelo and Tarja. Please, bear with me here. I am saying that we should not throw out judgements so lightly about people we know little about, or from impression based off on accusations from their adversary, thats simply just unfair. I understand however that it is NOT EASY, how could it with such amazing, beautiful songs like Poet And the Pendelum? " He’s been known to do much worse than what we’ve seen here." May I ask what? I love the band, I discovered them when I was 10 years old in 2000, have travelled multiple countries to see them with all singers. I do my utmost best to try and seperate my emotional love for the music with their personalities. He actually gives me the good vibes, the vibes of someone who actually has in mind the safety and needs of the frontwoman of the band. He did so also before he and Tarja fell in love. You have to understand, to be the only woman on a tour with 15 + guys in a cramped bus with little room for privacy (counting the management team and the crew workers) was painfully exhausting for Tarja. The guys write about this themselves in the Nightwish biblography. Emmpu even jokes how the manager of the guys, Ewo, who we see in the documentary a lot, seemed more concerned about getting on road and throw parties - and we saw enough bottles here for a Greec wedding. An insanely toxic environment for a classically trained singer like Tarja. Her needs was often neglected in terms of security and basic necessities. Marcelo managed to change that for her. Like wise jaana hedemaki wrote above, I just think the guys simply (maybe humbly mistakenly even) failed to just come to terms wit the obvious fact that Tarja is a woman with different needs, some that stems from obvious biological ones. Bear with me on this one. Tarja was like I mentioned once even sexually assaulted on stage by a fan and had been touched inappropriately numerous times before. It pains me to say it, but Marcelo was the hero that night. He wrestled the guy away from Tarja, and was TOLD by the guys to comfort her backstage, while they continued playing. As she was traumatised they even had the nerve to ask her back to perform the rest of the show. That night, Marcelo was more of a "man" than Tuomas and the rest. In addition, Marcelo never once called Tuomas or the others any bad names, or slandered them for their heritage or cultural differences like they did. I am not even scratching the tip of the iceberg here of the things the guys did which any woman who cares about her own agency and dignity should be enough to raise their eyebrowes to the moon. It is not my intent to hurt your feelings or try to ruin your impression of the guys. I have followed your channel since the beginning, I have been quiet mostly, but I have listened during those times you so openly talked about your abuse from men, how you were looked down upon, neglected and discriminated due to your gender, and had their medieval expectations of you. In this regard, you and Tarja have A LOT in common, and the men in your life, hate to say it, a lot in common with the guys of the band. Knowing everything I know about the band, I SITLL LOVE their music, but I stay away from gloryfing their characters. Tuomas looks sad, granted. I think he looks sad because of what he is about to do, which by the time of this documentary, has already been decided unanimously by the guys to fire Tarja prematurely. Tarja is however oblivious, and this goes on for 9 whole months. To be lied for nearly an entire year, no matter how hurt the person carrying out the deed is, is still a fraction of the hurt SHE was exposed to the night after End of an Era. Again. I am not telling you to stop loving Tuomas, Marco and the rest. Infact, Marco has apologized to Tarja in person and even said in an interview that the way they handled her depature was not worth loosing a good friend. As such, Tarja was going to leave by her own accord anyway, they already hade a date sealed, it is the way it was handled that is mind-blowing. Similar to a jealous boyfriend who is hurt that his ex is leaving him for a new guy, and in the process decides to upload nude photos of her to ruin her reputation and shame her. Yes, these are two different situations, but the implication still the same. Something which should have been handled privately was not, at the expense of Tarja.

Educate them! 😎 I have to say it is little painful to read all that....maybe dealing with females or social skills were not the groups strongest points back then.It's finnish men we're talking about here, I can believe that.It may not be even now, not all people are very good with social skills it but I'm so glad that it is far in the past. They all have spouses now and I couldn't imagine for example Tuomas would let that slide if it would happen to his wife Johanna now.Times have changed also....me too movement and all that. It does give a little perspective to the things. It's not going to make me love them less, it's just interesting to know rather than basic her fault-their fault-thing people like to chant. There were no winners in this thing.And Tarja did say she didn't feel good for years but she put up with it because she loved their music or words to that affect.I'm glad Floor is used to being surrounded by men in the business plus she is quite tall, won't be so easy to mess with and I believe she has said she has never had those kind of "problems."

For the decision he made to fire Tarja from the band when they should rather thank Marcelo that instead of being the band's manager, he looked like the Tarja's safety guard.... in the documentary it is observed how he kept her apart from the group ..... I think it was the best decision tuomas made ..... For the good of the band even if the world came to him on

They did play Planet Hell on their 2012/2013 tour. I think only for a few shows when Floor first joined them. This is a Marko heavy vocal song and it allowed Floor more time to learn the set. Maybe?

He speaks Spanish and English, but not Finnish. If you notice the guys wait for Tarja to get away when they tell the joke and then they do it in Finnish. They knew Marcelo couldn't understand them. That was their point, they were basically mocking them behind their back. If not, why wouldn't they have said it to Tarja's face or said it in English. That's why a lot of people find the joke offensive.
Maybe, you could react to Tarja interviewing Floor on one of your Nightwish Sundays livestreams. I think that could be fun. They seem to get along great. Annette seems to be the only one holding a grudge. Everyone else has moved on.

I believe Tarja getting fired was a HUGE loss. Although, they now have the perfect fit with Floor (😁), Tuomas suffered immensely for letting her go (TPATP)....So many people today still hate him (😭) for that. My goal was to bring people together here, and your comment is far from just that. I won’t be removing it, simply because I want you to know that I respect the opinions of others....but there are the rare occasions where I think some are just downright mean. I don’t play when it comes to rudeness on my channel.
