Wellllll, this hit me a LOT harder than I was expecting. Take care of yourselves, everyone. Take care.
*maybe check back afterwords for this bit.
I know I still have it pretty good. Many more people are having a worse time in life than me. My reaction here isn't a call for pity or help, it is a moment captured. It is stress revealed to an unknowing host.
Thank you,
Mear

A grown man infront of his computer, listening to Nightwish covering Pink Floyd, leaves the room cuz he need to take a breather from all the emotion they put in a COVER SONG, is one of the most beautiful and touching things i have seen and felt in a very long time. Great reaction, Ryan. Wishing you a well recovery with your arm, you'll be shredding again in no time!

🙄 there's no need to "correct" people. Nightwish covered the song... as a tribute to Pink Floyd.

I'm usually quiet, but I'm here always, Ryan. You resonate with this song in a way I didn't saw before, because your personal stress moment. But that tension you felt was always there in this performance, you just pointed it. It's good that you brought this to light, because now you can deal with it on a conscious level. It is better that way, to identify the problem consciously, because your decisions will be conscious then. Their music really has the quality to bring to light something of us all, it is so deep.

This is why we listen Nightwish, emotion what they can bring to us... All kind of. Another song where Emppu give a straight face solo is Dead boys poem. And it really make you feel sad when you see Emppu like that, usually he is smiling.

While it's nice to watch Emppu smiling and goofing around and having fun, I actually like to see him serious, too. It gives him more depth. ❤️

✨Sure Emppu is not happy. This is the final concert with Tarja..she dont know, but the rest of the band does know that they will fire her just after the concert. With that knowledge, there is some moments at this concert where you almost can "feel" there frustration. If you search for "Nightwish - open letter" you can read the letter they gave her - and also find her answer. Powerfull reading!✨ Very very fine reaction Ryan!

Yan, I've read it...yeesh. I was never in a band that meant anything to anyone but us, and the bass player decided here wasn't going to play certainareas of northern Indiana. So I could hire another bass player to cover those shows, or replace him. His house was where we practiced, and he had the contacts. But I told him he was done. We had one more show after that, he intentionally fucked up a couple songs, we made it through, he split afterwords. I don't have the immensity of the feeling, but I understand it a bit.
@Idefixu

Playing, singing songs with Tarja knowing what was about to go down after the concert must have stirred emotions in each of the guys. But performing a song without Tarja, and the concrete realization: Ok guys, it's the 4 of us after tonight, this is what is left of Nightwish, we are Nightwish from now on, if there is going to be Nightwish anymore.

You are the first reactor I watched who noticed the nod Tuomas gave to Emppu. It shows how much you feel for them. Imo they made this song better than the original. Often from miserable feelings the most beautiful songs were/are created and that stirs emotions. I thank you for this reaction Ryan and I hope you have a have a speedy recovery so that you an do which you like most...making music. Take care!

That was by far the best and most empathetic reaction I've ever seen for this song. It just makes a big difference if you react to such a song with a certain previous knowledge and love for this band. For me, it's also simply the best cover of a legend that ever existed. So good that it depends on the original by lengths. That it is the band feels really bad can be seen alone in Emmpu. No matter how sad a song is, he always laughs. No one had fun that evening. If you now include the lyrics of the song, even if that's probably too far-fetched, it's 2x as hard again. I also think Marco puts a lot of frustration into his performance here. The cover is just like a sledgehammer punch. Come through well!! 🤘✌️

Use us to vent Man! CRYING is Good! Keep the tears flowing. We will catch your fall. We are here for you! In this situation it's always a good thing to think about how thankful we shall be for having our loved ones alive. And that we can see the end of our misseries in the horizon. The fact that we found a vaccin in such a short time, compared to how it used to be. That's also a thing to be thankful for. You are not living in a place without clean water available. There are no bombs falling at you. You don't live in Yemen (just an example) . You don't live in in a dictatorship. You are not inprisoned. You are not alone! Hope this helped a little to get a perspective on life. Much Love to you Ryan!

Midwest Division of the Nightwish Army, Great Lakes Battalion checking-in from The Straits of Mackinac/ Mackinac Island, Lake Huron USA I was a guitar player for 26yrs, played as my sole profession for 16. Then in 2009, I was a passenger in a 50mph rollover accident when our vehicle hit black ice on the highway. I suffered a severe spinal cord injury and instantly became paralyzed the shoulders down. I have shoulders, biceps, and can weakly bend my wrists...but no fingers. The one constant thing that always helped me through the tough times in life had disappeared forever. Stay strong...these words helped me, I hope they help you. Out of the night that covers me, Black as the pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul. In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed. Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the Horror of the shade, And yet the menace of the years Finds, and shall find me, unafraid. It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul

This is still one of my absolute favorites from Nightwish - and it's also the perfect example of what covers should be: they added their own spin on the song, made it "theirs", and communicated a boatload of emotions through it. And Marko's vocals continue to be sadly underappreciated, the guy seriously deserves a place in the spotlight. (I'm still hoping for a cooperation project between him and Hansi Kursch!) And as a migraine sufferer, I can only say: nope, adrenaline doesn't kick in and those two hours on stage had to be excruciating. I sang in a choir and while I was able to perform during migraine (one has to love muscle memory...), I was barely coherent afterwards. Watching Jukka is just painful.

14:52 When Marko ended that held note, with what you said just a couple of minutes before... he is usually the most stoic of the band, the one that often was the one to appear in interviews and on documentaries revealing bad news about the band and such, and you can see when he does that last "OH!," that stoicness cracks for just a moment and he lets out so much emotion in that note. That is, in a very twisted sense, why this concert is often regarded as one of the best performances Nightwish ever did until Wacken 2013. This is because for each band member, they are so good at their respective instruments and songs that they could probably do it while asleep, but music is also their therapy, their release. So they put in 150% instead of their usual 130% into this concert, and it shows. Every song slapped, every solo was on point, every drum hit was crisp and perfectly on time, all the guitar solos were tinged in that epic shred that a solo should be. Wacken 2013 was one of their other bests, but because of the opposite reaction. They had just gone through ANOTHER singer departure, but they found a new singer that fit in perfectly, could sing old and new songs, brought her own touch to things, and, in my opinion, after a long period of denying things, finally healed fully and got back to business.

I am glad I saw your reaction 👍 And as you said, we are many that have experienced the impact Nightwish does on us. And Maybe that's why we love their music so much.. It forces us to reflect deeper - you know you are stressed right now, and therefore thinking irrational - you family doesn't love you because you can play music or be handy - it's your person, personality and role as a father and husband they love - but you already knows that - and to be honest - of course you feel sorry for yourself, it's not fair to be degraded for a month or two - it gives you stress to think of. But be honest to yourself - it doesn't change their love to you - it's yourself that have those thoughts. Music does affect humans - and it starts a row of different thoughts - you need to recharge your mental batteries while you are on 25%. I myself goes to the Nature, and find the inspirational thoughts there - I don't know how you recharge - but just do it - alone or/and with your family. Find the power and be creative again - make plans that are durable right now - gives you success - your mind is the strongest healer you will ever meet - it just needs some new input, to deal with the current circumstances. Nightwish just started your reflections on life - you are out of balance and therefore easy to affect - but it is all in your mind - your personality doesn't change because your right hand needs rest. That should not be able to stop you from anything!! And yes I really liked your reaction, because you are honest - and human - and musically, you really knows you stuff👍🤘🤘💪 Greetings from Nightwish Army Denmark 🇩🇰 - and go and buy your wife some roses 😉

Hey Ryan, this band affects everyone on an emotional level more than any band I can think of at the moment. I have watched this video many times and I can imagine that this being the night that they fired Tarja, they probably wanted to do a song without her during her costume change. I think they were proving to themselves that they could perform without their original lead vocalist. Also they probably felt guilty about it, so lots of stress which manifests physically in the body. Take care.

This performance seemed like it was a painful one for the band. But, being the absolute professionals they are, they did what they always do, and put on a stellar show. But as you yourself said - it's not just the song, but it's the culmination of so much crap going on in all of their heads I think, during this one. Basically, the whole situation fucking sucks. And you can see it on their faces. Jukka is an absolute champion, I have no idea how he played that show with a migraine. I can barely even tolerate static ceiling lights when I have one. We should all be glad that there was still a Nightwish to show joy and enthusiasm after this. It sounds cheesy (sue me), but the way I think about it when I see this show is that they went through all this pain to be able to bring us joy in the future. ❤

Extra special emotionally, as Tarja was backstage, not knowing what was to come. That look from Tuomas as the camera focusses to Marco. Then later, Tuomas nodding to Emppu. "The grass was greener" Moving on to pastures new? "The light was brighter" "With friends around me" (my version) Argh! written as "surrounded". These guys are absolutely amazing, you were ready to wipe away a tear... Your sweet dog checking on you. Yes, everybody gets stressed, especially with this pandemic, affecting everyone mentally, particularly if you are gregarious. Hang on Ryan, get rid of some of that stress, hiking, biking, running? Or resting in peaceful countryside. You are doing great, in spite of not being able to do what you want to. In a Northern England virus hot spot, ethnically not believing in vaccination, people have had enough, decided to have a big suicidal street party, I hope they survive, but a few of them and their elderly relatives won't.

Hi Ryan. Please forgive my bad English because I'm Brazilian and I get very confused about the ways to construct sentences. I would like to thank you for your genuine reaction to this beautiful Nightwih version of this Pink Floyd song. I always considered myself a very strong person, but this pandemic screwed me up. I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and from being a super active person I can now barely perform my basic tasks without completely exhausting myself. My doctor said that I needed to find something that I loved dearly to dedicate myself to, besides work and daily tasks, because otherwise my life would be very difficult. I've always suffered from a huge lack of talent, but even so I started to learn to sing and I've noticed a great improvement in my quality of life. The first song I learned was Edema Ruh by Nightwish, which I love so much. My dog, Chewbacca, complains a little because he tends to bark when I sing, but I think he'll still get used to my lack of pitch. I can confirm that Nightwish has saved my life many times in the past and is saving again. I wish you and your entire family all the best in the world and that you recover quickly. I was very touched by your video and I agree with you when you say that as we get older we start looking at things from other perspectives. Greetings from Brazil.

Wow! one of the best reactions to this tribute to Pink Floyd, what happened to you here happens to me (actually quite often...) when listening to some of the Nightwish songs, but nerver to this one until now, when you so clearly explained the situation the band and the bandmates was in at this particular situation, even thou it was no news to me, but the situation.. Thank you! Well music is about feeling (or should be) so... keep up the good work!

Thank you for this emotional reaction. I have many times been thinking, how much good music means to us. Especially when we feel down. All those things you said about these NW guys, in what kind of situation they were during that show playing. It must have been a huge stress, and still they gave all of it. What happened on the following days and weeks, with all of that stress and depressed feelings Tuomas had, he composed great music to save him self. And I think he has saved quite many people with his music. When listening his masterpieces sometimes tears in your eyes, he helps us to go on. Let's keep listening more of NW, it's good for us.

This is a really appropriate song for Nightwish to cover as it deals with the difference between the way we see things in childhood verses as adults. That's a very Tuomas theme. For me Tuomas/Nightwish music has been the best therapy I've ever gotten. P.S. I love the circular screen NW added above them in a nod to Floyd's stage setup that can be seen in the "Pulse" concert.

Nightwish are one of those bands who can only play one way - flat out! They don't leave anything in the dressing rooms. This is possibly my favourite song by this band, even though my head pounds softly in sympathy with Jukka every time I hear it. A problem shared is a problem halved is an old saying, but true. So never worry about sharing here. I suspect most if not all of us have been there in one way or another. If music like this performed like this doesn't touch you in some way, you honestly need to stop listening. You're missing too much for it to be worth your time. Go walk the dog, tend the garden, bake a cake.

I've was suffering deep depression couple of years. Well, I still am but not that deep anynore. During that time we broke up with my wife. We were together over 16 years. Nightwish (or Pink Floyd) isn't the music I get comfort from but talking to people is. Also, watching how you reacted to this and how you talked about it, made me burst into tears. So thank you for your genuine reaction.

You never know where the music of Nightwish will take you, but you have the good sense to be honest, and share with the Nightwish Army. I ain't no psychiatrist, but engaging with not only Nightwish fans, but also your fans, about your emotions will probably help, in some way. As for the song, like you said, no comment needed. Well, almost none....it's epic!

Nothing to be ashamed of and it is good to hear people talk about it. Many of us can't. But it is one of thecstrengths of the NWA that they largely understand this. We're here to listen and if that helps, we've served a purpose.

That was lovely Ryan. Great song. Very weird vibe for the concert as a whole. There are probably signs throughout this concert that the camera picked up of the band's emotion. Tuomas, the master metal storyteller, crafted 3 songs for Dark Passion Play that seem to tell parts of the Tarja story. Bye Bye Beautiful (His farewell to Tarja?) Master Passion Greed (Aimed squarely @ Marcello, Tarja's then husband & agent) The Poet & The Pendulum (His stages of depression) Therapy through music. You said it yourself. Take care and wonderful reaction.

Keep returning to this reaction... It's my new favourite band (since the latest year) and one of their best performances, and as you clearly point out its one of theirs hardest (most difficult) times, two of them sick and a tough time coming up (the letter...) And STILL they perform as they do here. Amazing! And all the credits to you for doing this reaction the way you did AND posted it. Thank you! You should connect with Amanda Webster here, she is doing a great job in dedramatising the mental health stigma. Keep up the good work (know you did some more reactions).

I like to hunt around for old reactions to some of my favorite songs...stumbled upon you... Friend, that was so genuine and human, I really felt you. But more importantly, you're the only reactor to acknowledge the band's struggles at this Helsinki show. Every performance was so freaking intense...then THIS! This version of High Hopes is brilliant! So I'm hoping your arm is healed up and you're back on track. I went thru repetitive stress injuries in both wrists/hands and it took 5yrs til I could do simple shit again. Also, I use music to help depression...cuz we're all going thru something...sometimes multiple somethings that shake your world. I like to follow the Nightwish philosophy of humanity, empathy and kindness...bc it's free, after all, and one kind word can really help a stranger out. I'm going thru my own stuff, and it's a heavy load. But a week ago I homed a stray cat with a fosterer...and last night she gave birth to 4 perfect kittens. Tears of joy, man.

Thank you Ryan! For a great reaction, for sharing your emotions, for being you! I am sending tons of healing and comforting thoughts, and love, to you and your family. As to the song: last concert of End of an Era, saying goodbye to Tarja, the difficult times the band went though with Tarja and her partner, the stresses they must have felt, which you picked up on, to me this song always felt as a lament, even more so hearing the lyrics. The grass was greener, it was better, in the past, we're saying goodbye to it now, and we do not know where we are going. This song just symbolises the period prior to this last concert, and what awaits them, not knowing what to expect, the uncertainty. The emotional depth of the song, the meaning, and the interpretation and performance by Nightwish gets me every time. And you added significantly to that. Thank you for sharing, love, Wim

Ryan... thanks for letting us in a little bit. It's what makes us human and relatable. High Hopes is a melancholy retrospective on life. The hopes and dreams we have as children and young adults and the realities we experience along the way. I had an event like that a few years ago. I had a health issue that forced me to give up so many of the ideas I had that 'defined' me. I had to resign from the job I spent 30 years pursuing. I had to retire from baseball (that is as personal to me as music and creating is for you) and so many other things that I held as dear. It nearly broke me. I divorced my wife of 25 years. I did some things that I can't undo. I did beg my wife's forgiveness and we remarried. And the event that gave me reason to live... My first grandchild, and the absolute apple of my eye, Lana came in to my life. She probably saved my life. It wasn't until 5 years ago that I began to understand what I had experienced. It may not be the same thing, but grieving, even the temporary loss of those qualities that we define ourselves by is ABSOLUTELY stressful. It makes us ask that eternal question... What is my purpose and have I achieved it? Will this 'interruption' of my path be permanent? What is my purpose NOW? Do I have purpose? Ok, ok, ok....a whole series of questions. I think High Hopes kinda uncorks the emotional component of those questions. Plus, Marko kinda invites that introspection with that COMMANDING performance. In any case, I stumbled upon this article and it gave me a little clarity. If you find it helpful, just pass it along. Thanks again themighty.com/2018/11/grieving-mourning-old-you-chronic-illness/?ChronicIllness_Page&Facebook&fbclid=IwAR0SpCJvITKr9ePHyJhGFku_iFnth-QZEvBinxmGNaeQrrbTwJQJkQIrpys

Wow, man, that's incredible. I've heard so many stories now about people's struggles that I just seem like I was whining about a thing I chose to do. (Not really, I haf too have surgery) but what I'm going through is NOTHING compared to many I've read. Many strong people. Many strong minds.
@josephbishop3590
@josephbishop3590 3 года назад
@@RyanMear ...was not intended to "one up" your struggle. I learned long ago about the futility of comparing my challenges to another's. The parable is as relevant today. "I once lamented having no shoes. Then I met a man with no feet." My comment was to validate your struggle. We all struggle at times. Yours is real. Mine is real. Sarah's is real. Larry's is real. They reaction to the struggle is where we find our strength. (Or not) But it doesn't have to be what defines us. You've made it acceptable to be human, and to struggle. Your reaction to the song and being vulnerable have made it ok for someone to be vulnerable and open up, where they might not before. Thanks
