NIKE ZOOM FLY 4 REVIEW | Lazarus like comeback or REACT MIDSOLE MISERY? | INITIAL THOUGHTS | EDDBUD
It is here, the super bright and winter ready ZOOM FLY 4 from the swoosh brand that used to make brilliant daily running shoes.
No holds bared here, this shoe is not that good. It's really a new upper on the tough as old boots react unit from 2019. Same outsole. If you liked that then you can be like a pig in mud. Its the same shoe, different upper.
I took it out for a 9 mile or 14.5 km blast with some half marathon pace miles to see what i could see. I saw a firm ride, eclipsed by many other better, cheaper and more forgiving shoes released since then.
Do yourself a favour and buy the rocket x or speed 2, much more exciting and comfortable ride than this one. It is just a tired sequel. Bring on the streakfly.

I really wish I knew what Nike’s plan with “everyday” runners and training/tempo shoes was? Turbo was perfect for Tempo days and even everyday miles, pegs getting heavier and heavier, invincibles are fine but too sloppy, nothing really in the middle anymore.

WOW even I've heard how much the turbo is missed! I'm just a tx bodybuilder that stands & studies midsoles. How could Nike not know? It's like skechers breaking the world with shape ups. Dumb people sued them for not getting toned calves 🤦‍♂️. So now you have to spend 200 on mbt.

I have the original light blue Zoom Fly and still occasionally run in it. My son has the Zoom Fly 3, which I ran a HM in in 2019. I went ok, but probably should have run in my originals. My son did like them, but he is a fair bit bigger than me. He now does his tempo runs in a pair of Pegasus 37s. The upper looks good, but that's about it. If everyone keeps trolling Nike about the Pegasus Turbo, perhaps they may listen. 😁

I have run in my zoom fly 3 for over 500k, and the shoe is durable, snappy for sure, I stopped reaching for it since I got my hands on tempo next%. Last I used it was to do a time trial 5k when tempo's pod burst on me. I did get a PB in my rundown shoes though, but somehow it wasn't a very pleasurable experience. Now I got adios 6 for my speed days based on your reviews, (thanks a lot for that) I seriously don't see myself reaching out for 3s again.

Yes, it’s a shame that they don’t continue the peg turbo line. Many eventually turned to HOKA Mach 4 or Rebel v2. My adventure with the zoomfly series will end at Zoomfly 3. I enjoyed the Zoomfly Flyknit which I still use it sparingly and I think the best shoe in the zoomfly series will be the lightweight Zoomfly SP.

Zoom Fly 1 SP was where it started. Foam used in midsole compressed too quickly, but wonderful running up until that point. After wearing out both pairs of SP's, tried to find a replacement. Tried Hoka Bondi 7, horrible, gave me a bad MCL injury, returned after 2wks use and injury. Tried Pegasus 37, horrible, returned after 1wk. Found the Zoom Fly 3. Perfection. 1st pair still perfect condition after 10 months of use over 1500miles. No words can describe my satisfaction and exact execution of purpose of this shoe that I was looking for so many years in a shoe: no injuries (literally zero after 1500 miles, 10 months!!!) durability (1500miles and going strong, doesnt feel any different from new, how is that even possible?!?!?!?), just for running purpose, one shoe for everything (I run for health and exercise and challenging myself, not for racing or time.). If your purposes of a running shoe, one shoe, aligns with me, the Zoom Fly 3 and 4 is exactly what you are looking for! Looking forward to the 4 probably over a year from now when I actually wear out my second pair of Zoom Fly 3 (still haven't worn out my first pair).

the zoom fly flyknit was my favorite out of the series. didn't enjoy the zoom fly 3 at all so returned them after the 1st run. we need the streakfly to release so I can stop rotating between my super shoes for speed workouts lol

The desire for squish is decidedly a distance runner thing. React is great for sprint and plyometric training. Not all “runners” are distance runners. So these might work better for sprint intervals when you want to stay out of your spikes.

Had to run around 120km to break in the ZF3. After that it was pure magic for me. At 560km they look horrible now but i still enjoy them. I have similar issues with VF N%2 (about 40KM mileage in them). Legs feeling tired during running after 5km mark. Only on asphalt, on track no such issues but i did used them at -4:15 min/km pace which is around my 10K pace. Hope they break in also, if not i will cry for my money :)) or only use them on track.

Dated technology. They could have easily slotted this into a cheaper Tempo Next% option with a ZoomX fore/mid-foot and a React heal. As mentioned, Nike just seem lost on anything besides their top end offerings. Goes back to my feelings of Nike, they take the customers for granted.

Zoom Fly FK was a fan fav and I surely enjoyed it. The 3 is a great looking shoe. I for one love the upper with great fit. However, that midsole made the shoe clunky and hard to get into a good rhythm. I dig the look of the 4 but with same midsole I’m not optimistic.

My ZF3 is still going, and I think it might take me to the end of next marathon training block (in 2022)! Not gonna bother with ZF4 though. I can't help but feel that Nike wanted to appeal to the wider audience with regard to the current models (ZF4 & VF2): Perhaps more ordinary runners who bought the original vaporweave shoes felt they were too narrow and tight for them, and that this new upper has sorted the issue but at the expense of weight saving. In terms of breathability, I don't think it's any better than the vaporweave. Other people reported heel slippage with ZF3 so the extra pad in the heel collar is probably apt this time around as well as the pull tab (ZF3 bugger to take off when locked in because of the booty type fit) and perhaps Nike thought that triathletes might prefer a big heel tab for transition phases - specifically Nike sponsored athletes? I also think that the ZF4 is probably an attractive option for the heavier set runner / racer who likes carbon-plated shoes but seem to destroy them within 100 miles or less of use. Ultimately the ZF will die out as soon as Nike stop developing the Next%. I have seen some weird prototype pics of the new Alphafly on IG. I wonder which direction the Tempo Next% will go? - more stack? extra plates? perhaps something to rival the Prime X...

And maybe that's why they are now my favorite shoe of all time. haha. Well said. I killed my 20 miler. They felt like trainers the first half, but felt like racers the second. Could've ran a Master's marathon PR if I kept going. And i've been injured experimenting with the VaporFly and Speeds.

At the Great Manchester Run I found more people running in Asics trainers today and of course the winner of women's elite 10k race is sponsored by Asics, Nike was also well used, not many wearing Adidas for the time I was on the course which was next to Manchester United stadium

I remember for a 5K race, you said you preferred to wear your dark green original Zoom Fly because of the pop and stability. Would you still wear the original zoom fly 1 if you are going to race in 5 K? If not, which shoe would you wear to a 5 K race?

@@EDDBUD question Edd, maybe you know this... Following up on this comment I started looking around a bit for the Tempo Next% and found a discounted women's shoe in my size. For some shoes, the difference between and men's and women's models is just the colourway. For others, there are differences in width, air pod pressure etc. Do you know whether this is the case for the Tempo Next%?

I got a used pair of the Zoom fly 3's from RERUN here in the uk. £25. I have marathon, 1/2 and 10k pb's in them over the last few months, so i have to say I like them :D (would never pay that full price for them though, lot of other shoes i'd pick first)

Still enjoying my final pair of Zoom Fly 3’s think I’ve commented before I like the bounce :) will prob get ZF 4 but happy to wait until I spot them with a discount. I think you are correct they are deliberately making them a bit heavy to increase the attraction of their £200 range. They could def be lighter.

Zoomfly flyknit was the best iteration of this shoe, I owned 4 pairs(used 1 pair just for casual wear,the Sequoia colorway, because they also looked great). It went downhill after,didn't care for the 3s ,only had 1 pair

Now I have Zoom stuck in my head as an earworm! I think it's time that Nike stick to what they are good at. How can a huge company produce some of the best racing shoes, but then churn out garbage, heavy, daily trainers? The Invincible works well for me as an easy day/recovery shoe and the Next% is my racing choice. But I cannot ever envisage spending my earth credits on a Nike daily trainer. They really have lost the plot in the market.

I compared zoomfly 4 to some RC Elites original today and I felt RCs very light and comfortable, picked a pair up discounted to 100 earth credits. Zoomfly 4 seemed so heavy to me.

When I first ran in the early React shoes, i.e. first generation Legend React it was one of the softest and best energy return midsole foams in the market.....now it gets dissed....

I almost get the impression that Nike doesn’t listen much to the consumers anymore with their products. It seems as if they just think “We are Nike and that is good enough”….it’s a shame because I use to be a huge fan of Nike running shoes l, but now I find myself reach for products by saucony, Hoka and other brands first.

How have Nike got it so wrong? Zoom fly flyknit is one of my favourite shoes of all time…react is such an outdated midsole. Nike are getting left behind, I agree there are so many better options out there at present. I think Nike are taking us runners for mugs, thinking they can put any shoe out and we’ll buy them…🤷🏼‍♂️

Almost turned off the video when you mentioned weight but I'll keep watching for Eddbud. Nike does not offer a lighweight everyday shoe anymore after the Peg turbo 2 (which was perfect IMO)

It’s unfortunate they don’t describe the various different formulations marketed under the “React” umbrella, maybe call it React S, React R, React GTi, etc. so we’d have an better idea of what sort of ride to expect from a shoe.

Uppers are thick and heavy on a lot of Nike shoes and react itself is very heavy. Definitely should’ve kept the turbo line over this line

Only the zoom fly flyknit and the endorphin pro ever caused injuries in 40+ years of running..I really loved the soft squishy cushlon midsole of the zoom fly but just couldn't get it to work for me ..I suspect the drop was the culprit as any high drop shoe annoys my knees..

I think it's not breaking in people need to worry about nowadays more like break out.. foams seem to lose their bounce a bit faster then they did Ps.. Nike showed me gyakusou green shoes for very cheap concidered the original price.. and they still shown but can't buy them somehow... So unfair

Hi mate, I'm guessing as a guy who's never run before I won't notice the difference between shoes that runners such as yourself would. My main concern is longevity of the shoe and and not damaging my knees. I'm a little heavy at 100kg, I'm guessing the weight and firmness of these shoes is probably beneficial for it lasting longer. Do you have any recommendations for long lasting shoes for heavier people. Thanks

The only Nike that I have had success in was the Epic React V1, after that none have been that great. Really wish I had purchased the Turbo 2 when I had the chance. No idea what they are doing. Seems to be all their focus is the race shoe and everything else is an afterthought.

This is not a fair assessment. React has enough energy return when you load it right. This shoe is good for more experienced runners who can load it well and heavier runners. If you are above 85Kg, you will be able to load this shoe at a moderate pace and feel the energy return of the foam and plate. Great shoe going at a great price at the moment.

I hated the zoom fly 3 and 4 at my 5k pace. It does nothing for me. It’s my cash and my opinions. As such a fair assessment.

Not surprised that the shoe is trash. 😂 The 3 was bad already, heavy and clunky with a midsole stiff as a brick and besides the upper, I did not really see any differences in the 4. Thanks for the review, definitely not getting this one.

Discontinued the modern Tempo Next% and launched a heavier ZF4 with the same old react foam? That's called backward engineering. And no Peg Turbo 3 when everyone is asking for it. Nike is not listening to its customers. Thanks for this review, you have nailed the coffin with ZF4 inside!

Unfortunately there are many runners out there that are obsessed with durability. Nike know this. How often do you hear “I’ve got up to 600 miles in these shoes and they are still going well “. No they’re not. The midsole has had it and you will probably get injured. I have the Nike infinity 1 at 450 miles and to be honest they are only good up to 400 miles so I should retire them which is why the react feels better because it’s not as durable.

I have plenty of miles left on my ZFFK since it's my new 5k racer and speed/tempo rotating shoe. I put 200 on my ZF3 for 10k-half PR. Tried VaporFly for marathon and will not do that again. Tried the Speed s but they don't like my body either. So based on that and this review..... Looking for a size 14 ZF3 to debut my December marathon . Or try the zfkk? Always looking for my Lunarglide replacement.

I still enjoy my Epic reacts 2. Below 280g for a size 12 US, responsive cushioning that just keeps going. The bottom is all shredded and ugly, but it’s all cosmetic. Why would they discontinue such a successful line? I certainly won‘t touch the infnity after all the bad reviews…

Did you say the pace range of the shoe was 5.08-4.15 per k or was it for something else. I used to do my tracksessions on the zoom fly 3 and I think I am going to do the same with the 4.

Nike's, product plan seems far to complicated and overlapping. It would be far more cost effective to reduce the line-up with sensible price positioning. The "Nike for you" may be a good option for customers that want to bridge any individual requirements that were not available in the mainstream options.

I still use Zoom fly Flyknit or version 2 that are 260 grams size 9 UK, these are way to heavy, i also have an old Brooks Hyperion at 180 grams that i enjoy the most for short and fast runs for 10-15 km,... the way Up in grams is not for me .

Great looking shoe, but no thank you at that weight. I don't understand Nike these days, apart from their super shoes--Alphafly and Next%--their training shoe lineup is lagging behind others such as New Balance and Saucony. Some of their "top" shoes are literally missing in action here in the States, the Vomero 16 and the Structure.

My go to trainer is the Magic speed and that is a light shoe .i was curious about this shoe but i think its a pass for me after that weight.

@@joshcontreras8821 yeah took a bit to soften up but i tend to like firmish shoes with a slight cush to lessen the impact of a firm ride . For bounce i have the sky for that. I have the invincible run but dont like the ultra soft mid or that sinking/unstable feeling (but im on the heavier side ). What i like about the magic is the weight / and mid geometry (roll) , yes it has a traditional flat shoe feel to it but a more forgiving one .
