Yeah I could have predicted her answer. 1: She is from SC. Conservatives have spent decades destroying our education system specifically for moments like this. They do not want properly educated people because the Republican party would not exist if we had an educational system that was on par with other developed countries. 2: Nikki Haley knows she can't say anything bad about slavery or the Confederacy etc, because those are HER exact voters. Conservatives loved slavery 200 years ago, and if it were not for the Civil War and then the 13/14/15th amendments that were added afterwards, most of the South would STILL have slavery to this day. Without a doubt. 100%. These people have needed, multiple times throughout history, to be forced to live in the 21st century. If it is voluntary, Conservatives and the Republican party will happily stay in the 1800s.
Apparently, Haley has a history of evading the question, which is probably why he asked her. It would be a weird question otherwise but if she tried to tap dance around this very question in the past, I can see why that guy ask her again in the townhall.

I remember 7 or 8 years ago when I found out who Nikki Haley was she said something along the lines of “South Carolina has had a tough history. We all know that.” It rubbed me the wrong way because to me it felt like she was being dismissive of slavery and Jim Crow. I have never been a fan of Nikki Haley since. Alyssa, Nikki has shown again and again that when it comes to race, she is not on the side of people of color, and that should be disqualifying for anyone - especially for someone who claims to be passionate about liberty and justice for all.
I find it worrying that a GOP politician could not mention the main cause of the Civil War (because some wanted slavery to continue and others did not) because it would anger a number of her supporters. It's like they agreed more with the side that lost and wanted to keep slavery going.
Why would she need to do damage control when she's 100% right? First of all, Haley was right. The civil war was not fought over slavery. The war was fought because the south was trying to secede. Secondly, none of you idiot lefties are gonna vote for her anyways. Third, she's never gonna beat Trump. So what does she need to do damage control for? This is what happens when you support the banning and burning of books and try to also re-write historical facts. Let's all learn from this. HISTORY IS VERY IMPORTANT. There's an adage that goes that "If you do not know your history, you'll get lost in a public gathering" There is a reason why the teaching of history is extremely important for us as people

People keep focusing on conservative politicians. We need to focus on CONSERVATIVE VOTERS. start asking these people "what are you voting FOR?" There is literally no reason to discuss anything with them because the only reason to vote for conservatives in America is because you are okay with bigotry.
You are right in that the quality of politicians we have is due to the electorate we have. But discussing anything with modern conservatives is not very effective, because what they believe is not the consequence of rational thinking but irrational believing. It is no accident that evangelicals, who rely on believing more than thinking, are conservatives. Modern conservatism is a cognitive disorder characterized by three traits: egocentricism, valuing believing over reason, and black and white thinking. This is a cutural phenomenon promoted over decades, and will take dacades to undo, but only if the GOP looses every election to remove the enablers from power.

The Republicans that support Trump would never care about a Civil War comment. This won't change anything. Anyone registered unaffiliated, vote Haley in the primary - she is our best shot against Trump
Alyssa is 100% correct here though. Every Democrat should be praying that Haley wins the Republican nominee. Think of it this way: would you rather a Biden Trump face-off or Biden Haley face-off? Our democracy is safer if Haley clinches the primary. Any unaffiliated voters, register Republican for the primary and vote out Trump via Haley!

She didn't vote for Trump and doesn't endorse Haley. She supports Haley as a way to beat Trump out of the Republican nomination, which actually is pro-LGBTQ since Haley is far less hostile to the LGBTQ community than Trump would be. Ask yourself this: Would you rather a Biden Trump face-off or Biden Haley face-off? The latter is what Alyssa is advocating for, and I sure hope any Democrat is as well (if you can vote in the Republican primary, please vote Haley!)

Haley spews the same stuff that Trump and all of these other republican candidates do. Especially about transgender people, which hits close to home since I am transgender. I just like to call out the hypocrisy with republicans who claim to be “LGBTQ+ allies” but then vote for people who want to hurt us. He then incited an insurrection at the Capitol to try to block attempts at the transition of power. Those are dictatorial actions, no democratic ruler tries to disobey the ruling of the people. Given Biden can barely form coherent sentences and Trump has said infinitely stupider, I think that our foreign policy is safer in the hands of former UN ambassador than the alternatives. That being said, I will still vote Biden - I just also am praying she becomes the Republican nominee

The reason they answered questions, wrong, or give the wrong answers to questions is because they do not know they do not know their audience. You’re all wrong. The basic answer was qbout what freedoms and rights the government allows. In this case the question was whether to allow slavery! Slavery was not President Lincoln’s main concern. The divisive state of the Union was his biggest concern and how to keep the union together.
I thought it was about the Louisiana Purchase. She is correct. Slavery is a given. It was really about MONEY. All Wars are about Money. Slavery is the easy answer, it was all very complicated.

The voter criticized her for not mentioning slavery in her answer. “In the year 2023, it’s astonishing to me that you answer that question without mentioning the word slavery,” the voter said.
He said a video of Haley being asked “essentially” the same question when she was running for governor of South Carolina had prompted him to ask it again now that she’s running for president. Democrats and President Joe Biden’s campaign quickly seized on the moment on social media. Biden posted on X, “It was about slavery,” along with a video of the exchange shared by one of his campaign accounts.
Speaking at a New Hampshire town hall Thursday evening, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie criticized Haley for not mentioning slavery in her initial answer. “She did it because she’s unwilling to offend anyone by telling the truth,” the Republican presidential candidate said, repeating criticism of her previous answers on abortion and Trump. As the former governor of South Carolina - the first state to secede during the Civil War - Haley has had a complicated public posture toward the confederacy. As CNN’s KFile has reported, she once defended states’ rights to secede from the United States, South Carolina’s Confederate History Month and the Confederate flag in a 2010 interview with a local activist group when she was running for governor. The 2015 shooting at a historically Black church in Charleston, South Carolina, spurred Haley, as governor, to call for the removal of the Confederate battle flag from the statehouse grounds where it had been since being removed from the state’s Capitol dome in 2000.
On the one hand, the US Civil War had to do with states’ rights and taxation. On the other, the rights some states were tying to maintain was the right to enslave black people as well as count them as less than a full person so slave owners would see less tax on them, so yeah, slavery was the easy answer Haley missed. I agree with Alyssa that Haley is not a threat to democracy, but she’s also an indictment on American education and doesn’t disprove the dumb American stereotype internationally.
Nothing to do with her education. She was the Governor of South Carolina which was at the heart of the Confederacy and the first state to secede. The slavers of NC said that their number one reason for doing so was because they wanted to maintain slavery. So it’s highly unlikely she didn’t know, and way more likely she was pandering to a racist MAGA base.
Haley said “the civil war is about government and the freedoms of what people could and couldn’t do. “ Why hasn’t the media responded by asking. “ Nikki are you talking about the freedoms of white peoples to own black slaves or are you talking about black peoples having the freedom to live w equality ,dignity and inclusivity with white folk, is this about freedom for gays, minorities ,women, people of color, or is it about freedom of white minority Christian’s to ban books, ban free choice for woman, ban gay rights, trans rights, minorities rights, put immigrants in cages, force Christianity theology in schools and sports and military. Answer Nikki. She’s an immigrant Indian with a black son in law yet she is shaking in her stiletto shoes afraid to death of Trump and his base.
