As soon as Perkins brought race into the equation, especially in today’s racial climate, there was no way Jokic was going to be allowed to win MVP. He could have averaged 50/40/90 and he still wouldn’t be allowed to win. Especially three straight. If Larry Bird played today there is no way he would be allowed to have three straight MVP’s.
Honestly Bontemps' strawpoll did way more damage than Perkins. Everyone knows that KP is a braindead moron who can't get out basic sentences much less articulate real points. Giving him credit of influencing of all voters is nonsense. He is a nobody. The big issue is that EVERY SINGLE OUTLET was trashing Jokic after he was the frontrunner in the straw poll. The media was relentless and it clearly got to Jokic. Jokic stopped playing to get himself out the spotlight. This was not about a race baiting %&*^*^ in Perkins, but a larger problem with the mainstream media.

The most disgusting thing is that Embiid had 73 first place votes, while Jokić only had 15 and Giannis had 12. This is the biggest robbery in the history of the NBA. I cannot believe Embiid actually got handed the award because he cried about it so much while having inferior stats in nearly every category and a worse record than both Jokić and Giannis. And the dude has a former MVP on his team! They play better without him! It’s unbelievable.

They’ve got either skill, awards or rings on him. You can say maybe by skill, I would still disagree, but greatness is a measure of everything. And Embiid is not top 10. He might retire in that echelon, but maybe not. Only time will tell.
Jokic having the better stats does not tell the whole story until you incorporate them with winning and context. Jokic clearly proves he is the real MVP of the league and the better player.

Oh, I didn't know there were official MVP criteria. I've been trying to figure out the standard since the awards seem to be inconsistent. For example, I thought the award went to the best player on the best team. But Jokic didn't fit that criteria the last two seasons, and neither did Embiid this season. Then I thought it could be about stats since Jokic had great stats the last two seasons, but when I looked back, I saw that a lot of players who had the best stats didn't win the MVP award, like LeBron, Kobe, and MJ in years past. But you're telling me there is a standard MVP criteria. Great. That will help me figure out this whole MVP thing. Can you please tell me what the MVP criteria is?

Jokic if he really wanted to win would also play the last few games of the season to reach the triple double average and win more games. Defensively, Embiid is above but offensively and how Jokic passes the ball is way beyond Embiid. Even if Jokic did not win, Giannis should have been ahead of Embiid but the media kept on riding Embiid.
It was a make-up but Embiid was arguably deserving either of the previous 2 years. It was just bad luck that Joker is literally getting better every year but you can only deny someone who's a top 3 player so many years in a row before you create problems.
I think the problem with MVP is a clear definition of what it means to be "valuable". If you are looking at pure individual numbers, then sure, Embiid is a worthy recipient. If by "value" you mean, how they impact the team/do they make the team better/can their contribution be replaced? I think Jokic is the clear winner. Put it another way... If an MVP candidate was to go down with a long term injury, which team would be most negatively effected? My money would be on Jokic and the Nuggets, he facilitates and runs that team.
If you ask me -- it should be the best player of the best team(regular season).. but then there would be no voting, no arguments, quarrels, etc. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This aged incredibly well as Jokic played amazing to close his serie against the suns and embiid played horribly to lose his. The fact that some people still think Embiid is the better player is laughable.
You don't get to cherry pick. Embiid scored 50 points on Jokic. Jokic can't defend period. Slow feet and he's got to push off to rebound because he can't jump. Look at his progress each year by year and compare it to Embiids progress . Those results are what's laughable to even attempt to compare the two. Embiid was always the better player with no questions, and hands down!!
The defensive difference isn't miles apart like people want you to believe, there is a difference between being a rim protector and just being a defender as a whole. Jokic ranks #12 in the league in defensive, which is just 5 spots behind Embiid and only a 1point difference. Last year Jokic even ranked ahead of both Embiid and Giannis.

Nikola Jokić is an underrated defender, yes he does play matador defense, but he will direct his team where the opponents may set their offense or will just intercept the pass like a mushroom... Sad that the MVP race is a popularity/political contest instead of a merit contest. Who won last year has 0 weight on who should win this year or the next.
I think it's really weird that they announce award winners during the playoffs. Talk about a distraction. Either do it right at the conclusion of the season, or wait until the playoffs are over.

Consider when Embiid feigned injury to suck the Jokic rematch in Denver just so he could maintain his leas in the MVP race. What MVP would out an individual accolade over a team win against a potential finals opponent? It’s fine, Jokic didn’t want all the noise, but Embiid is NOT about his team.
The MVP award is going to be socialized. If you want an equilateral debate. I'm excited for that. But for now politics really does precede everything. If someone is going to win 3 years in a row. Figuratively speaking he has to win Most Improved Player, too in order to compensate for the fact that politics come first and its not a perfect meritocracy.

Jokic is better than Steph on offense. Jokic is on the level of Larry Bird in that sense. Two greatest offensive players to ever play the game. Zero flaws on that end of the floor for either of those two men.
I love Jokic and respect his game, but Steph is the best shooter in the history of basketball and very smart offensive player that has singlehandedly created GSW titles. Without him GSW was as bad as Nuggets were without Jokic. I do not know what Larry Bird was doing that good, but I think he was not even close to level of changing the game the way Steph and Nikola are doing.

He made 3pt accepted as winning strategy and that has killed traditional center position. At this point the most influential players in history of the game are Jordan and Steph as the game has changed through them playing it in better way.

The level of skill and athleticism is levels bellow today. Progress in sport overall was immense. NBA was half amateur league compared to today's league. US population(player pool) is 50% larger today than it was in 1980 and world population is double than it was at that time and now better fed, taller and stronger. Basketball is 20 times more popular and knowledge and experience is much better. Half of NBA is foreign born and we have to be delusional to compare todays league to 80's and 70's. I would bet a billion $ that average team in league today would tear into peaces 80's Celtics and Lakers as well as 90's Bulls. And no these old teams would not play harder and would be drowned by 3 pointers.

You can tell that the voting for MVP is bs as it is when they give people like Perkins a vote. The dude was literally a joke in the NBA himself when he played with is 6ppg average lol. Best way to have a fair vote for the MVP is to get 100 random people across the country that do not follow hoops. List the top 5 players (no names attached) and then their stats below the assigned names (ie player 1, player 2 etc) no name, no race, no team, no previous playoff experience, no outside media influence etc.. strictly a blind vote based off the overall stats. Next year, a new selection of voters.

It is not about flashy blocks, dunks and shooting using half of your teams possessions to be high blocker and scorer. When Embiid is not hogging 76ers'spossesions and other 76ers players get opportunities they play better and win more.

The problem is that if player is using a lot of possessions of his team and achieve effect that is measurable(let's say 33pts per game), that is good. In order to really evaluate that effect, you need control arm and that is games when that player is not playing. If Embiid is using possessions that his teammates could use equally well or better, that will make him neutral to negative effect player. Joel Embiid was simply negative value for 76ers in the season when he was awarded "Valuable" title. It does not make sense and that is that. I would not want that kind of player on my team.

I have a very simple formula that would guarantee the correct player gets MVP every year: Win Shares multiplied by team wins. League leader is MVP. that simple. I won't go over all the past MVPs, but using this formula: Jokic would be the runaway winner the past 3 seasons. Nowitzki would've won both seasons Nash won. Jordan would've won over Magic for 2 of his 3 MVPs (although one was really close). Bird was the deserving winner all 3 years he won. George Gervin would've won instead of Bill Walton (who only played 58 games that year). Frazier would win over Reed in 1970. and Wilt would have at least a couple more MVPs. If you threw PER and VORP into the mix it would be even more accurate, but I wanted to keep it simple and straightforward. Wins + contribution to those wins (ie Win Shares) = MVP. something I think everyone would agree on.
Shaq should hve won those seasons. The MVP should mean MVP. Should not have much to do with team success oother than punishing stat padders and empty calorie players on bad teams.

I agree Shaq was in decline by 03 and especially 04, but for those years, only Garnett or Grady is another good option for it. So Nash was 05, 06... okay, maybe that is Dirk. Dirk or KG, probably, I'll check the numbers later. I also don't think David Thompson was an MVP caliber player. Walton was.

For some reason I assumed the Spurs were a bad team so I didn't even look at Gervin, but they actually had 52 wins. that gives Thompson a score of 610 and Gervin 624 (weak year for MVP, Bird's MVP seasons were just under 1000). Walton probably was the MVP when he actually played, but he only played 58 games. and Kareem only played 62. I'd be interested to know what Portland's win-loss record was with and without Walton. That may have been what swayed voters (that's what swayed voters for Nash. when he would miss games the Suns were terrible)
You can't use a formula for something subjective and team wins is only 1 factor. The reality is the numbers aren't that hard to understand, they just CHOSE not to because the Black racists didn't want a White boi winning a 3rd MVP in "their game". Jokic rested at the end of the season having locked up the number 1 seed in the West. He may have handed Embiid the MVP at that point, but the Nuggets have their eyes on the bigger prize, and that rest is already paying dividends. Joel "Street Clothes" Embiid has his trophy but Jokic is dominating the Playoffs.
Jokic was on his way to a 3rd straight mvp until Big Perk said, he was leading because he was white. Big Perk helped Embiid get a sympathetic mvp award
Id say Embid v Jokic was close in the regular season so I get why Joel won it cuz its for the reg season, but it was close and I also had Joker as MVP. The playoffs proved he should have won it, but its a reg season award and Embid was there in the reg season.
Jokic regular season stats were still more impressive. I understand they couldn’t keep giving him the award, but to suggest embiid had a better reg season is just not true.
Embiid is the worst mvp in sports history only reason he was given it was because he whined and cried about it for 3 seasons when in that time he has missed half of his games for whatever reason flops and chokes at the biggest moments. Precisely what an mvp doesn’t do…..
some constructive critique; comes from a good place: try a change in your voice/pronunciation as your content is really good. the pulling of certain words distracts from your enjoyable commentary. with this slite change, you would get more recognition, I imagine.
I agree with you for the most part but Embiid not leading in scoring in the 1st round was because he was getting doubled and tripled team on every possession. If he takes up a shot while being doubled or tripled, that's just a bad shot and the right thing to do is pass the ball. You can't just look at stats and say that he "underperformed".
I'll say what I think, Embiid's MVP was a pity award ahead of the rules change... He's never gonna play the 65 games needed for future nomination...
