Awesome car and puts a smile on my face everytime I drive my GT-R. The game has moved on and doesnt matter if others catch up. What Nissan has done is fantastic and inpiring. Well done Carlos....
@supercarkid He couldn't change up, it's a safety default until the ESP is happy the car has sufficient traction it won't allow the gear change. Hence the delay in change after he'd pulled the paddle.
i like reviews that give you real tests that you can expect when buying one not what a professional can do. Like hp rating i like what it makes at the wheels not at the crank.
Although I did love this review, what's with British car reviewers & Datsuns? Datsun 1600 - a rally classic that had better lines than a Ford Escort Datsun 240Z - a beautiful curvy, long nosed classic that didn't fill up the whole lane & both of which are still racing today!
i wasn't around when Nissan was called Datsun, But all i remember from Nissan are those Skylines, silvia's, and devil Z's that would dominate most DTM back in the day. Inline 6 + turbo baby!!!!!
I've owned BMW M3s and Porsche and just got a Nissan GT-R. The GT-R is King Godzilla of the performance car segment right mow at 30% less the cost. Even better it has great driver communication dynamics. A new top bar is now set. The consumer will win when the next king is determined if the whole market segment is not outlawed by the green movement.
The Autocar reviewer says the company that makes the GT-R used to be called DATSUN. This is incorrect. DATSUN was a temporary foreign market brand for the company that always has been carrying the name NISSAN. It is similar to LEXUS from TOYOTA or ACURA from HONDA. However, growing up in Norway, the first Nissan made car I saw was the DATSUN SUNNY (early 1960s), the first Toyota was a TOYOTA CROWN (normally sold only in Japan) and the first Honda was a HONDA CIVIC...
@imking7 Actually it IS a skyline for all intents and purposes. Only reason it isn't called that is because Nissan's marketing dept in Japan felt that now that the "Skyline GTR" was becoming more expensive, they didn't want it confused w/ the normal Skyline (aka Infiniti G37). But it IS the successor to the Skyline obviously!
The R35 is only called GT-R. The Skyline name has been dropped from this car, and it has been developed as a separate car model from the current Skyline series (which is still on sale here in Japan). Differently from the Skyline, which remains Japan-only, the new GT-R model is to be marketed world-wide :) Greetings from TOKYO
@TargetRender Remember he was on the rev limiter in 1st gear for half a second before he shifted into 2nd gear, and he was with a camera man that probably weight 90kg or more. Without the camera man and late shifting, a stock 09 gtr will do 0-100mph in 8 sec flat.
@EdwardSinclair Not exactly. With a fire retardant head cover, helmet on, and rpm climbing so fast I need a triple color shift light. And in the heat of the race sometimes still hit rev limiter.
oh yah, great video. The host is the man! I love how he beats the snot out of HIS OWN M3! I think he needs to upgrade his brakes to some brembos/apracing/stoptechs :)
Really? That surprises me. I've known 4 people over the years who have had Porsches and they all loved them and never had a bad word to say regarding quality or reliability. These include a Boxster, 968 CS, 993 Carrera, 996 Carrera, 996 Carrera 4S and 997 Turbo. I know the guy who owned the C4S and the Turbo the best and he's only just sold the Turbo (which was his everyday car) because his children are now too big to fit in the back. He put over 65k miles on it in under 3 years with ease.
Im a bmw fan but i have to accept, this GTR is simply the best in its league. It is not about luxury, not about ultimate interior but it is pure purpose build for ultimate performance.
thats for a skilled driver that is use to the car. Remember that he said he had one chance, and i guess he havent tried the car for weeks, like the car manufactor-testers do...
The key phrase is "with no effort." When it comes down to it, enthusiasts like us buy cars like this because we want to enjoy driving. If, for you, that means going around a track a few tenths quicker than someone else then that's fine. For me though, it's more about involvement than outright speed, and for that reason I'd have the Porsche.
I guess you didn't bother to check the official website of the Nissan GTR? Where does it say it's a Skyline? And it says that the R35 is only a successor of the name Skyline because of the GTR badge. If a Altima got the R35 platform and the GTR badge would that mean it's a Skyline? No.
@the26thhour Because in the UK Datsun was mainly known for their truly nasty small hatchbacks etc. Very few people bought the Datsuns that were actually quite good due to the image of the bad ones.
Us and only us, drivers, will judge about a car being more fun than another not any 0-100 or lap time. These are just aspects. Feeling cannot be measured. Believe i would have tons of fun with a skyline any day if i had the chance. So i dont think im biased against the skyline which i admit it can be faster in track and in str8 line. But i love porcse and u can see it. Always friendly and willing to have a conversation:)
@MerlinofChaos hes a legend! lol it can do 60 in about 3.5 (claimed by nissan) but as he said in part one it was cold and the tires would have been worn. its impossible to get the start perfect everytime too!
GTR is a very fast car. Its an amazing car that looks phenomenal as well. But when ppl say it does 0-60 in 3.5 seconds, its only true to certain extent. Some GTRs have done 0-60 in 3.3 secs, some motoring shows have reported 0-60 time of 3.7, and this one did it in 3.8 secs. So what im saying is that, GTR will do 0-60 in 3.5 secs or faster if all the conditions (traction, road surface, tires, tire tread, electronics, etc) are just perfect. PPL get 3.5 secs outta ur heads cuz its always different
Whats with the guys mentioning the ZR1? You are aware that it has almost 700hp while these all have under 500? Also, ZR1 is only faster around tracks than M3, GT3 and GT-R are faster. People think ZR1 is so fast because it went around Nurburgring in 7:20, but they forget the fact that it did that lap on super-slick track tires (even the chevrolet themselves say it). On non-slick tires it does 7:38, while GT-R does it in 7:24 in semi-wet, while fastest 911 (GT2) does it in 7:18.
I hate how he keeps referring to the GT-R as a Skyline. This thing is completely different; it shares nothing with the old cars other than the GT-R badge. And yeah, it's not the best looking thing, but people who buy these have my respect, because it means that they really love cars, and see past the facade and understand the engineering underneath.
That is the thing with the Nissan GT-R. There is no denying that it is AMAZING, but when people ask you what you own, and you say Nissan, it just doesn't sound at cool as saying you have a Porsche.
In real practical situations you don't want to be visually checking the rpm, you'd want to play it to the ear, which means you need to know your car engine.
i totally agree with you about the effectiveness of this car. But its not all about speed and track times right?? I mean porcshe gives you the best driving experience ever. So the only thing that is better in skyline is its price. I dont really care about being a faster drag car or it goes around half a second faster than the 911. I only know that getting out of a 911 its sure that you will be with a smile on your face wide up to your ears
ever since it was announced it was called the GT-R and said that the Skyline name was dead so why does such a informed and experienced driver keep calling it a Skyline!?
I dont think you got what i meant to say. If you notice i dont even refer to GTR or skyline or whatever on my message. Let me get it clear for you. All i meant to say is that speed and laptimes is not even an indicator, concerning me at least, that shows how good a car is. Also if you notice i dont even compare the two cars but i say that an objective pros of skyline is its price. Maybe i didnt say it clear but i didnt meant that all the other aspects are better in porsche
Oh, maybe i was too harsh with that one by, but still. Porsche is priced over double than GT-R. I assume. Could only find GT2 price on Porcshe's site here: 333.000 euros. M3 is 117 500 euros GT-R 138.000 euros And i agree about the point why not to have automatic M3 also in the comparison. Or just throw in M6 for comparison: 219.900 euros But still the truth is that GT-R beats same priced cars. (i think)
Do you own a R32, 33 or 34? I can bet you don't. As a R32 owner I can tell you that this car is NOT A skyline, it doesn't even have the name Skyline on the back of the car. It has limits to it's customization. Skylines were meant to be YOUR car the way you wanted it to be, easy to work with, easy to learn with great results. The R35 is horrible to work on.
dud the gtr is not stock the viper and the vette r stock they dont have turbos the gtr is a twin turbo...so i dont know what stock is to u but that the gtr is not..
I would say I would go for the GTR. Just not into the Porsche looks anymore. Plus I like allthe equipment that comes with it. I really think Porsche need to make another supercar that isn't 911 styling.
I just don't feel that these drag races are fair. What I mean is, you have an AWD Automatic, Vs a RR manual vs an FR manual. Apples and Oranges. I'd kill for any of them though.
The gt2 is scary but come on thats what gives driveing fun that's what get's the adrenalin pumping cars that feel all safe and civillized can get boreing sometimes and the gt2 isnt that unusable if your looking for a useable sports car that doess evrything well get 911 turbo or audi r8 u can use those in all kinds of weather th gt2 is raw track focused car thats road legal but is mainly just a race car for th street &come on theirs way more scayer cars than the gt2 like th capart1,tramnota,atom
stop calling it a skyline -> its just called the Nissan GTR. They dropped the skyline name for the gtr after the r34. Now Nissan have the skyline range which is separate from the high performance GTR range.
@Rukus023 GT40 is probably one of the only decent american car which can rival our european cars/japanese performance cars. It seems to be the trend that american car manufacturers focus on adding weight and power, instead of adding lightness and response/handling which european/japanese manufacturers do. Its probably because you guys have far too many straight roads instead of the nice twisty country lanes us europeans and japanese have.
No car is perfect, anybody knows that. The reason I don't own a Porsche is because I can't afford one. The 968 belonged to my uncle so I saw him very frequently and he remains adamant that it's one of the best cars he's owned. The point I'm making is everyone I've mentioned loved their Porsches and have owned several of them. If I bought a car and realised it was crap, I wouldn't sell it, loose money on it and then spend even more on another one; with every reason to believe that was crap too.
And just because I am so hell bent on this issue because it seems EVERYONE thinks to know everything about the GTR badge history, type in Nissan Skyline on Wiki and you won't see a trace of the Nissan GTR on that page. Or hell even go to the official Nissan GTR page and it doesn't even hint to the name Skyline.
Response to Odiggler: sadly..these brit's whom you intelligently spoke on, were the one's who first used the english language that you typed. Though they were a germanic tribe, they were soon after known as anglo-saxon. Just letting ya know pal :)
you can pay out the driver all you want, but the fact of the matter is, the GTR, for the same price, gives you far better performance, with no effort. and thats just in a straight line. one the track, it tears up the porsches ass, hell it will even beat the GT2, which costs way more.
yea....street race for life man...... well...i do like m3; however, if there is a compare betwwen a GTR and M3 , then GTR will win in every single ways.... which one u going to pick then? GR or M3
