2004 Infinity G35x with a used ECM installed to fix codes P1122 and P1126 (Electronic Throttle Control faults). The used ECM needs the keys programmed for immobilizer codes P1610 and P1611. After programming we find another issue with the MAF sensor.
Here is the closest scan tool to the model I used in this video.

You are right on this diagnostic approach. We are in a flat rate environment. If you have a ECU in hand that would be the path to least resistance. When I have a full log of cars often after spending the initial hour of diag. I move on to the “gravy train” after the workload is behind me my mind is clear and I can focus on the problem child. Even I don’t get it done that day I can marinade over it after hours and come up with a diagnostic strategy for the following day.

It was fun. A bit of your experience came through when after the immobilizer was reset and it didn't run, that you realized it had to be something else. I've never seen (other than in your book) an air filter that bad. I'm not even in the business and I get aggravated at people who don't service their vehicles. Nice video Paul.

ANOTHER SCANNERDANNER VIDEO MADE JUST FOR ME. Thanks Danner, turns out my intermittent timing issue was loose plugs (literally torqued them from maybe 9lbs to 23lbs and issue went away) not being able to ground properly. Fixed that and now chasing random stumble issues (likely related to a coil that was damaged from the plugs) and I'm getting immobilizer codes now. I LOVE OWNING A 2002 NISSAN ITS SO MUCH FUN

Man, I need to get my hands on more Nissans! I saw them so rarely that they still feel foreign to me; makes it difficult to "talk" to them like I do so many other cars. Your son does an amazing job as cameraman! He seems really eager to learn; that's a trait that stands out these days! Never stop learning, Caleb! You'll always be a step ahead in the world. :)

hi Paul video's like your's helped me to change my profession from locksmith to flipping car's for a living thank you so much, now i have a curved one for yea.... my wife's car is a v6 1999 accord i got it a year + ago, was driving fine for a year 6 mouths ago started to shut down mid driving at random, about 2 mouths ago it was doing so often we stopped using it, now it won't start at all, will crank, no start, engine is getting gas from pump, all plugs showing spark, (i haven't tested the spark timing) the only error showing is a p0420 and i don't think this is the problem. main relay was replaced, ignition switch was replaced, mas air flow sensor was replaced, none solved this problem, i had 4 other mechanic's look at it to try to find this problem before it has died completely. i am thinking some kind of electrical problem. my wife is ready to junk it, but i think i can fix it. please, please, please help me, and tell me what you think, so i can tell my wife i told you so, and make her car "happy", happy again... so she could be happy, thank you for all the video's

Just wanted to give a heads up you should write the vin from the vehicle into the used pcm. Not that big of a deal unless you have a state inspection station that compares the vin from the tags to the pcm mode 9 data then it may be flagged for potential emission bypass. Great content as always!

Is it possible that the software in the replacement PCM not be emissions compliant for that vehicle? Could that be detected during normal emissions testing?
@ednewell1847
@ednewell1847 5 лет назад
@@fascistpedant758 It is possible that the used pcm calibration is not correct for the vehicle, However I would expect it to code for a specific emission concern. As far as state emission testing goes I would assume that a basic OBD plug in station would not check for the calibration but a dynamometer / tail pipe tester may fail for gross polluter

These Nissan’s often require throttle system resets, also done with the scan tool. May have fixed the original issue without the ECM swap. Issues can be caused simply by unplugging the throttle unit, or sometimes having battery disconnected too long.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 5 лет назад
if you remember in the video, I had the new (used) module installed, then I re-installed the original computer and it definitely still had those issues with the ETC system. So a battery disconnect and or ETC unplug it test, would not have worked here, but thank you for the tip! EDIT! Sorry, I misread your suggestion. I did not see a specific throttle reset other than the two I showed.
@gettingitdone1
@gettingitdone1 5 лет назад
I know we’ve had some that we couldn’t reset with the Autel tool, but our auto electrician could with their tool (not sure which one they have). Probably not the issue you’re having, but a good place to start for those watching.

I have a 2009 G37x giving me that same ABS code and I haven't figured out what it means. We also just completed a head gasket job on it and I am also getting codes saying high voltage to the TPS and APP sensor and we can't figure out if it is a short or open in the wire harness or the ECM going bad. We have tried Infiniti's tech guides diagnosis procedure for those codes but it has literally gotten us nowhere. Do you have any idea how we can go about properly diagnosing the issue with this car? We are at our wits end with it.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 4 года назад
circuit high codes are generally from an open signal circuit, but because you have multiple sensors setting these codes, you need to look at the sensor ground circuit. I bet you have high volts on the sensor ground and it is because you left a main computer ground off or lose when you did the head gaskets.

@@ScannerDanner sorry for the late reply. Also thank you so much for responding I wasn't expecting it. Normally when I ask anyone questions on here like this they don't respond so I have some serious respect and gratitude for you taking the time to help me with this. I checked over my ground and did find a ground that was a bit coroded that grounds the ECU although it seemed like it was still making contact but I did thoroughly clean it with electrical cleaner and a wire brush. I looked over the rest of the car and everything seems to br grounded in its original place and making contact so I'm not sure what else to check ground wise. I am going to try to start it with the new throttle body tomorrow when it arrives and see what happens. I will let you know what ends up happening. I also ran a self diagnostics check through the Infiniti secret menu that I just learned about yesterday and the ECU says it is fine so I knownthe ECU itself being bad can be ruled out. Really awesome that rhey incorporated tech like that from Airplanes into the thing it helps diagnosis a lot.

I had a throttle actuator burn the drivers in the computer. I had to replace both.

Is it possible that chunks of the filter got into the throttle body and somehow damaged the computer drivers for it?
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 5 лет назад
I do not think so John, this is apparently a known issue for these models (bad drivers for the ETC system) and there was no debris in the throttle body.
@johnaclark1
@johnaclark1 5 лет назад
@@ScannerDanner OK, yeah, I didn't think any debris would necessarily still be there. I just wondered if a piece got stuck, caused high current on the drivers trying to move it, and then later got sucked through. I didn't realize it was a known issue on those, though. Good to know. Thanks!

So the impact of the accident caused a good chunk of filter to loosen up and clogged up the Maf?
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 5 лет назад
Very possible that was the scenario. But it was at other shops and someone told him to change that ECM (which was the fix for those ETC codes), so he had other issues

can you fool it to think its hot then redo the reset again after you've actually warmed it up?
@ScannerDanner

I could have finished it, but I didn't want to run the car anymore and the idle was okay, so I let it go. No, you don't want to alter or fool the engine computer with engine temp readings, because the entire fuel curve and even idle speed is affected by it.

Hey scanner Danner I got a good one for u. How about a 2007 Saturn ION which we swapped the injector, coil, and checked compression it has 170 on #4. That's our problem cylinder #4 misfire. Checked continuity to the ECU no broken wires. Also disconnected the coil when running and has spark. Did check for injector pulse with test log and pulsing
@ScannerDanner

Does it misfire at higher RPM or only at idle?

@@ScannerDanner idle only smoothes out when revved. I think it's the ecu
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 4 года назад
@@evodog2300 It absolutely is not the ECU. It is very common to have a valve related problem do exactly what you are describing. Even with compression testing good (static). You can try doing a running compression test. That may reveal the issue. Also, take a look at a vacuum gauge connected to your intake. See if it is lower than normal and if you have a needle nounce.

Di you ever get an answer as to why he wanted to know if it was new or used? Probably because you may not have to completely reprogram a used computer but definately a new one?

Thanks for the video.... Quick question what led you to take the path of maf sensor and not fuel pressure?
@EHKOS
@EHKOS 5 лет назад
While I'm still learning myself, I would say because the engine would *start* reliably. The way it kept stalling out sounded like it was choking or not getting enough air. Plus the fact that it collapsed when throttle was applied also points to it not having enough air. And if you want to blame laziness, FP is harder to check than unplugging the MAF :p
@sylburnarthurs4398
@sylburnarthurs4398 5 лет назад
@@EHKOS I was thinking about it a little differently..... Usually that behavior would cause me to think of lack of fuel. Of course testing would prove that. Also if the maf sensor {mini passage) was clogged then air would not pass through and the computer would not compensate the necessary amount of fuel to match the air that would be going in through the normal intake duct to the engine giving a lean mixture. So I was wondering if it was just a choice, based on experience, or if there was a specific signal that sent him down that path...

1. Accident in that area 2. air intake tube was split 3. after confirming the split tube wasn't the issue, next easiest step was an unplug it test of the MAF 4. unplugging MAF was WAY easier than connecting a fuel psi gauge 5. the way it would immediately restart, told me fuel pressure was there, if it was a psi issue, we would have absolutely had some extended cranking times 6. it stunk very badly (wrong air/fuel ratio) 7. again, the unplug it test of the MAF is a super easy test to do and I got lucky :-)
@EHKOS
@EHKOS 5 лет назад
@@sylburnarthurs4398 That's an awesome way of thinking about it! Thanks for the perspective explanation! I never even considered that. Although following that logic, it would still be an air issue *somewhere*, but I'll be sure to consider fuel pressure as well next time!
