I have a new frontier and it gets over 20mpg. I traded in a 2021 Ranger xlt and it never got more than 19mpg. I really enjoy the steering its not loose and all over the road like most of Fords trucks. This truck also is way more comfortable than a Tacoma for a long road trips.
@@kentadamson6992 lol I only get 20.7 in my ranger n yea it does be all over the road . Still love it though but ima trade it in for a silverado or f150
@@piratepete2022 i love the titan but i ended up with a f150 and i like it because my fiance can easily drivd it she said all the other trucks were uncomfortable
I have watched your review about four times. Mainly because you’re the only one who shows the SV trim. I own an old 4wd Toyota that will remain my off road crawler. I’m not gonna drop 44 grand on a new truck and then drive it through the brush, rocks, and woods. For me, The SV trim with the upgrade premium package makes the most sense. Great review.
This is perfect for frontier buyers. It’s new but still simple. That will go along way. Yea there’s parts from last gen and not as fancy but Nissan doesn’t need it to be. The truck will sell its self.
Excellent review, Alex! Having owned 2 Frontiers and a Tacoma in the past, I would definitely choose this over the Tacoma. In fact, I hated my Tacoma. It was uncomfortable, drove like sh*t and the chassis vibrations drove me nuts. I got rid of it after just a year. However, I have always enjoyed my Frontiers as the reliable, capable, durable, affordable trucks that they are. That said, I definitely wouldn't say this new Frontier still offers the same value as before. I purchased a well equipped 2016 Pro4X for $34k while the new Pro4X starts at $38k with no options, so when compared to the competition that previous value is almost gone. Also, there are quite a few annoyances in this new truck... no telescoping steering wheel, lots of hard plastic, dumb location for offroad controls (down by left knee), pricey option packages, it's not really all new, etc. That said, I'll probably still buy a Pro4X next year because it is now the best overall midsize truck available, in my opinion. I just wish Nisan had gone a bit further to truly modernize this truck, especially considering how long they waited to do a redesign. Who knows when the next one will be...
The Pro-X is a replacement for the Desert Runner model the previous gen had. Tacoma sells more 2wd TRD Offroads than 4wd ones. Most people only want (and need) the offroad look.
Exactly, not sure why Alex said was weird, that is the model i would want, maybe he is not familiar with the prospect buyers. I don't need the off road capabilities
And you are the only one who thinks the the pro x is weird, is actually brilliant, i want the pro 4 x looks but i don't need 4 wheel drive so i don't want to pay more for that, sorry Alex it does makes sense for a lot of people
Not the only one, a lot of people think the same. I think it's super weird. Plus if you're just going for looks/status symbol , I'm sure the pro4x sticker on the bed would suit you well
I really love the frontier I have two of them a 2002 supercharged and a 2003 with heaters and double muffler and everything new I mean everything beautiful truck 🛻 and very reliable indeed 🙏🇺🇸🇮🇹🇮🇪🇩🇴🌻🌞💜
I agree with your assessment. If I decide to go with a mid-size pickup (daily drivability and size) over half-ton truck (better tow capability), the Nissan Frontier would be on my Top 3 list. I am a Ridgeline fan. I also learned to drive on a 1968 Jeep J-10 full-sized Gladiator pickup truck, so I am intrigued with the Gladiator. The Frontier seems to split the difference between the Ridgeline and the Gladiator. Solid!
I owned the previous Gen-Frontier and I'm amazed how many interior bits I see carried over. For being redesigned, there's a lot of 'parts bin' bits they reused.
Yeah Nissan hasn't changed their switches in a long time. The window switches, switches on the steering wheel, etc. go all the way back to the 2007 Infiniti G37. So they've certainly gotten their worth out of them.
@@Ward413 The interior layout is very similar, beyond just the switches. The knee detent, area that rises up to meet the dash, the "oh-shit" handles - all the same.
Yup . Alot of parts bin use from.a truck that was 16 years old. Nissan cutting corners as usual. That cheap Ass 4wd switch is crap. That switch is 16 years old . And the d Fact they didn't update the frame means tons of cost cutting . But they have the balls to charge 40,000 for this thing
Finally! Been waiting for your full review video of this truck for awhile since your teaser preview video a couple months ago. Always enjoy your thorough reviews.
Alex, just curious if you'd like to answer, how come you never reviewed the second gen Frontier with the 4.0 liter? Did you feel it no longer competed because of age? Or too many reviews from others already? I always wanted to know your opinion on it.
As a business proposition, if I were in charge of any vehicle manufacturer, there is one thing I would do above all else, and that would be to go ALL IN on front seat comfort. Whatever else I had to sacrifice to remain price competitive, I would do it, because I feel that aside from having a good and reliable drivetrain, there is nothing more important than the seat you are going to be spending every hour of ownership sitting on.
I agree. I’m currently in a 2020 Ford Explorer and they are some of the most comfortable seats I’ve been in (in non luxury vehicles). They are firm but soft and hug the body well and at 6 ft tall my legs are supported as is my back with the lumbar support. So many vehicles I have tried I’m comfortable for a half hour or so and then my back starts to hurt. Front seat comfort should be a big priority
My 2021 Ranger Lariat has super comfy front seats, with lots more adjustment. The truck isn't perfect, but the seats sure are good for long road trips.
Ridgeline still best for me and family, my 15 year old is 6ft 3inch and would not fit it back comfortably for or family trips, the reliability is very good since 2010 and our 2017, the ride on and off road to go fishing in northern Ontario is excellent, our fuel economy is decent enough, I love the looks despite negative reviews, we love our Ridgeline even though it's not perfect, but closer than all others
Not in same class as Taco, Ranger or this new Frontier since it's a body on frame. Ridgeline competitors are new Santa Cruz and Maverick. Ridgeline super practical but most agree it's an eye sore. And for most truck buyers not enough testosterone for their needs 🙄
@@James-il3tq small @#$! Compensation for buying big trucks for the people that do not need...I have F150 hybrid, F450, and Tundra which I use for work ...but for normal everyday use I use my 2009, or 2017 Ridgeline and my say the same about you being a eye sore, but I don't judge you for it...I judge you for your character and contributions to humanity.
@@mountainhobo Ridgeline is wide but only 200" long and also body on frame which I'd imagine many would shop with new Maverick and Santa Cruz. All 3 of these good for on road and urban use.
The exterior looks good, though it lacks any real distinction. The main drawback of this truck is that it's a Nissan. I just don't trust the Nissan brand anymore. The reliability, durability, and resale values just haven't been there for the last decade, or so. Toyota is still the best IMO.
The nissan frontiers have always been reliable and have very good resale value. The nissans without CVT have always been reliable. If you're not buying a sentra, versa, or altima, then you're fine.
It's not just CVTs. A friend of mine is a big fan, so of course he bought a Frontier. The automatic grenaded at 40k miles. Granted it was the older gearbox, not the 9sp they use in this one.
There's a lot of truth in that, and their JATCO automatic transmissions are very problematic, and the new Frontier's auto is a JATCO trans. too. The tacoma is also doing poorly with the V6 atkinson being so anemic, and their tranny jumping around to find a gear that's right. ALL Tacoma's are MEXICAN made from now on, please write to toyota.com and complain.
The Pathfinder and Frontier are the best looking Nissan's in the segment. I am so happy Nissan is turning in right direction guess Carlos Ghosn really screwed poor Nissan after his arrest they really went back to quality again.
The New Frontier is nice and a great option to consider for new buyers looking for a midsize truck. I hope it’s enough to push the Toyota to redesign in 24 to some class leading improvements. Too bad the MT was discontinued. It was reliable and solid. Hope the Frontier proves itself in years to come to be a reliable, dependable truck.
Kids kids. Welcome aboard my fellow Airhead! Agreed, Nissan has a lot to prove. They are no threat to Toyota but there is no harm for ALL manufactures to step up their game. I really hope it does well.
In the exclusive dog comfort index this gets a 4 out of 10. The back floor is fairly small and the sub woofer takes up most of the left side. While chihuahuas and Pomeranians will be comfortable, Labrador Retrievers and German Shepherds will fine the back area rather cramped.
A bit further into the future, we learned the Ford Maverick does indeed haul like the Frontier. Often times more so. However, it is held back by tow rating and off-road capability. Surprisingly the Maverick has the option for a standard trailer brake controller. Which should be a legally required for anything that has a tow rating of 3000 lbs or more.
So if you were looking for an urban midsize pickup truck that was comfortable for the occasional long road trip, would you go for the Frontier SV with two wheel drive for $34k or the Ridgeline RTL for $40k? This new entry makes my plan to spend a lot of extra money on the Ridgeline a lot more difficult to justify.
When talking about the bed you said "... at 6 ft tall..." Thank you! I've been watching a LOT of videos about the new micro trucks last few days. I've seen half a dozen people making videos showing the head room and leg room in the back seat but never said if they are 5'4" tall or 6'8"' tall and I wonder just what the legroom they showed means to a person 6'3" tall. I'm enjoying your videos. Please continue to mention your height in reviews like this one. It's a helpful touch like so many of the other things you add in that others leave out. Well done.
Can anyone please tell me if the turning radius has significantly improved? Apparently not, no review has mentioned an improvement. Anyone who is familiar with the out going model would recognize an improvement immediately.
Check thetopher's review which was out couple days ago. He also mentions the bad turning radius and shows it on the POV. Apparently it would be hell for a quick turn !!
The clearest competitor with the Tacoma lol, and they killed it. Amazing. Nissan keeps on being itself. I wonder how bad it’s automatic transmission is going to be…
I understand, but they probably only killed it for the American market. Why offer something that doesn't sell? Canadian and other international market have manual transmissions that a few US buyers want.
@@stevornrichards1380 can confirm here in canada we won't get the manual for the 2022 frontier, for 2021 the manuals we can still get that are unique are the sentra and rogue sport (qashqai)
@@elai3147 you guys get a manual Sentra? That would actually be a cool car. The new Sentra is a great car aside from the CVT. I’d probably buy a manual Sentra over a manual Corolla.
Clever proposition from Nissan. Everything you need, nothing you don’t. Let’s hope they’ll keep it affordable without getting too greedy. If they’re asking for too much, they’ll probably miss out. It’s on my shopping list with the Gladiator and the ZR2. But I wish there was a stick option.
How do you figure? A lot of People budget monthly expenses. If you Need a truck then 13mpg vs 20mpg matters. That’s $540 vs $350 a month in my case. That’s a savings of $190/month or $2200/yr.
Thing is, any new truck model would need to have years and years of hard overlanding experience, expeditions, etc. before claiming it's "coming for the Tacoma," haha.
It's funny to me how these are considered midsized trucks in this current day and age. Dimension wise, my '19 Frontier is almost the same size as my old full-sized '86 Silverado pickup...within an inch or so...
I'm 6'7" and I fit into Tacoma, although it's not super comfy. I had a rental for a week and even slept in the back seat instead of pitching up a tent (a bad idea frankly, but I'm lazy). I remember a couple of gens ago the roof was too low for me, but it's just about possible to drive now.
My friend is 6’5 and fit in his 3rd gen 4Runner. He is used to trucks and I’m used to driving and riding in normal smaller cars. I’m 5’10 and relatively skinny, and I find every 4Runner and Tacoma to be very cramped inside, and I rarely find myself uncomfortable in any vehicle.
It's a beautiful truck. Once the maverick is out I'm definitely going to be cross shopping the frontier and maverick. I know they're different classes but it's a choice of passion with the Nissan vs practicality with the Ford
Not sure if the Ford being more practical. More affordable maybe since it’s not a true truck. But then neither is the frontier, if it’s actual work that you are needing. Both these manufacturers scare me from a long term reliability standpoint
I was thinking the same. The engine knocks ugly. Hopefully they didn't try to use thin oil to save MPG, it just ends up burning and building up carbon.
Redline reviews took it on a media trail and they said keep it in second gear. The engine sounded really bad and the reviewer made that clear. The transmission is a Jatco (Mercedes) transmission, but the engine is naturally aspirated and suffers at higher altitudes.
@@spinmouth4114 oh god I thought you were joking with the transmission being made by JATCO. Just checked out Sofyan’s video and you’re right. When will Nissan learn??? If you watch SavageGeese’s review of the GLC43 AMG with the 9 speed, when he floors it the transmission slipped really bad. It starts at 7:30 in that video.
Gas mileage shouldn’t even be talked about anymore since the entire US auto market has switched to Trucks/SUV … gas prices must not be an issue..everywhere I look I see trucks an big SUV.. IMO
Would always buy a Toyota, BUT the T. Tacoma engine is so Weak in the 4 and 6 cylinder (the new Toyota engine with Atkinson cycle to save gas is terrible)(the old 4.0L engine on the Toyota was better) , I test drove the new Nissan engine 3.8L in the 2020 model with the new 9 speed transmission and it was fast but the truck kept trying to shift gear to save gas and make the drive jerk, hopefully in the 2022 model Nissan gave it a sport or power button to stop the transmission from changing gears all the time to save gas, stop it from jerking, but the truck was way faster than a Toyota Tacoma v6 and powertrain felt better. (question is do I buy a Toyota that will run forever with just oil and fluid changes, or a Nissan that has been going through so many reliability issue and crazy new management but has more power (and I think the Nissan looks better too) )
I'm definitely upgrading to the newer Frontier when they become available. The Ford Maverick just isn't my thing as they just make me feel dirty with their cheapness. I'll take a Pro X any day over a Pro 4X as not all of us need four wheel drive and the extra cost associated with it.
The Maverick looks like a throw away truck after 3 - 4 years. Beware of ALL small engines made high HP by adding a turbo, usually about 60 - 65 thousand miles the engine will blow, and getting an overhaul nowadays means getting more trouble as most can't do it correctly.
@@red8723 Re: small turbo engines - If you actually take care of them, not true. And I'm not talking about visiting your dealership every 5k to 7.5k miles for a cheap or free oil change where they rarely use the correct oil.
Buy the time you do the add on options to the SV model if you want a 6' bed you may as well buy a Ram 1500 for the same money and get better options, full size truck and no Direct Injection engine.
As a diehard Toyota truck owner - The new Frontier is the Tacoma that Toyota should have produced. I hate the current Tacoma. The drive train is a wreck and the seating position is terrible. I towed a 3,500lb trailer twice from AZ to CA in the current Tacoma. The transmission NEVER stopped shifting. Even on a level interstate with cruse control on. On the way back we had no trailer attached and it continued to relentlessly shift. That, and I felt like I was sitting on the floor with my legs straight out. Very uncomfortable. I am super excited about the new Frontier. These trucks have an exceptional reliability track record and the price is right. Looks like Nissan hit a home run on this one.
I want a more hardcore version of the frontier fron the factory. Twin turbo v6 or supercharger with an appearance package will get people's attention real quick!
Bought a 2021 , SV Midnight addition 4x4 for $30,000 last year. Just happened to be near a Nissan dealer the other day and decided to take a look at the new trucks. They had a SV, 4X4 and a SV, 4X2 both with cloth interior. BOY! talk about sticker shock. The 4x4 was $42,450 and the 4x2 was $38,450 Don't think so !!!
Got a 2017 frontier fuel milage sucks but other rear end going at a cost of $6,000 to me truck has not been to bad really. Still think they need more keg room for drivers
It's nice to see Nissan step it up. Tacoma has dominated the segment for years, however now with the Frontier stepping it up and hopefully RAM Dakota coming back in 2024 Toyota will be forced to step it up with the wimpy 278hp V6. Tacoma is very underpowered. RAM Dakota with V8 will dominate the segment.
No telescoping steering wheel. Guess this truck is now off my list. Arthritic neck I have to lean back a bit when I drive. Also haven’t seen a cooled seat option in this truck.
It's insane to not have a telescoping steering column in anything but the cheapest subcompact car. It's inexcusable for it to be missing in this truck.
No rear vents are a deal breaker for me for this vehicle unfortunately. Kids in the back. Real surprised they did not include that, thought that was only a GM thing.
Not really blown away with the mileage and the lack of amenities in the cab. Some console vents and under seat storage options in the rear seat area take away a lot of the shine for me.Orange accents don't make it any better.
Honda Ridgeline still the best swissarmy midsize truck. You can't beat it in terms of it storage and utilitarian. Of course if u r looking to get a traditional body on frame. This Frontier would be the best buy. Unfortunately I can't believe Nissan said, this is what their customers wanted. Storage really limited here and just a basic bed? Nothing innovative other than just a regular bed. Glad they price the pro4x @38k. Hopefully those dealers don't messed them up with some fake markup.
I'm still a little baffled why they would put the new engine and transmission in the old model for just one model year. There was probably a lot of effort that went into modifying the truck to accept the new powertrain.
the powertrain was designed to fit the old chassis which the new chassis is revision of the old.. That's a page if out of Toyota's book they've done that for years
Looks like the passenger seat "desk" is gone :( They used to market these as work vehicles. I own a painting company and do a lot of paperwork on the go.
I am deciding to buy one. My current frontier is blue book is higher than when I bought it new. And with the Feds planning to raise interest rates I wonder if this is the best I can get for my old truck.
