On this episode of Stay Tuned, Tony and the boys hop in the truck and head to Spanish Harlem in NYC to rescue a 1973 Buick Electra 225 that has been sitting in a parking garage for 15 years. Packed with 455 cubic inches of Buick V8 power, topped with a ton of 90’s speed parts, this boat was built to be the “fastest Buick in New York.” With nothing but some hand tools, a few small parts, and a lot of carb cleaner, they set out to get this car running and driving. Will they get it fired off? Will it make the drive home? Most importantly, will it do killer burnouts?

This is a hilarious episode that reminds me of my father-in-law’s ‘73 Duece and a Quarter. What a beast! 455 c.i. engine would make the car just squat down before it would blast off down the road. Had “brocade” nylon interior which couldn’t be destroyed, electric/power everything - more than a match for any full size car back in the day, certainly a match for comparable Cadillac of the era. We t boned a Pontiac Catalina wagon full of teenagers who cut across the front of us and creased every panel from front to back - all it did was loosen the rubber strip on the front bumper. Car went over 400,000 before the rust finally finished it off. What a great vehicle - thanks for the memories!

Wow... 3 across the back seat of a Land Yacht brings back some reeeeally old memories. Juniors in high school in Coopersburg PA, a buddy had a New Yorker with a 440 in it. We worked at a shop at the time, put a carb and cam in that thing and it was surprising what it would do. Slow as hell by modern standards, but fun back in the day!

Circa 1987, My first car was a '72 Buick Electra 2 door, same brown interior but gold exterior. I never had Nitrous, but yep those tires would FRY at will. That 455 was super reliable, but prone to overheating and prolonged top speeds (burying the 120mph speedo all the time). Fast -- top speed, sure. Quick -- I would get my a$$ handed to me by friends in 5.0's. Still, any roadtrip or cruising (yes, it was still a thing in the late 80's) was in my electra. Once, we went on a ski trip -- 8 people total in that car. We'd offroad it, cruise it, etc. In the end, I drove that car thru HS and college, plus a few years after. 7 years total. I got it with 110,000 miles. In the end, she had 320,000 miles. Floors were plywood due to rust. Trunk gone. Water leaked from the rusty roof due to vinyl top. Yet it still started and ran. Love them electras!

You guys were so lucky to have a sea of cheap cars like that available to you in good running condition. My first car when I was 17 in 2001 was a 1992 Crown Vic LX 4.6L 2V with 87k for $1800, it was the cheapest to buy and insure V8 RWD modern EFI car that I could find. I really wanted a 1994-1996 Impala SS or even a Caprice or Roadmaster with at least a 350 but, they were still way too expensive and hard to find then. The 4.6 was actually quicker than a 305 or 4.3L V8 GM car and got better fuel economy so, it was the choice. I owned 6 Panthers through the years before I was old enough to insure and could afford a Mustang GT, I had 3 of those('05, '10, '11), A '13 Caprice PPV, a '16 Chevrolet SS sedan and I still have an '04 GTO 6spd that I have to put an engine into...

Glad you clarified that the engine was a 455, not a 454. I was screaming at the screen, but somewhat curious about how or why 454 was adapted into an Olds. I've spent some time with both and they are torque monsters. My 455(s) was in a jet boat and would squirt a heavy 20-foot hull down the lake pretty swiftly ~ 60 mph on a good day. The 454 was in a 1974 Chevy box-type ambulance that would hit 110 mph with a tailwind. Long live the GM big blocks and may God bless the billions of dinosaurs they consumed!

It also completely clouded the starting area in white tire smoke. The Monaco had compression. Facts.
