NJ Devils TRADE Vitek Vanecek For Kaapo Kähkönen! Devils Get 2 Goalies on Trade Deadline Day!

NJ Devils TRADE Vitek Vanecek to the San Jose Sharks For Goaltender Kaapo Kähkönen! This is the first time I've seen a team get not one, but 2 goalies and the New Jersey Devils Get 2 Goalies on Trade Deadline Day!
This means the Devils will have a tandem of Kähkönen & newly acquired Jake Allen from the Montreal Canadiens to close out the remainder of this season. This gives Nico Daws and Akira Schmid time to develop in the AHL with the Utica Comets and the Devils with a more NHL 1 two punch of goalies to close out this year.
This doesn't mean the Devils won't still look in the offseason to try and acquire Calgary Flames Jakob Markstrom or Boston Bruins Linus Ullmark as those two big name netminders may headline the NHL trade rumors for Goaltenders in the offseason.

I have a strong fondness for Vitek from last season but this was a solid move. I hope Kappo comes in with something to prove for the last games of this season.

Me too, I liked Vanecek and was hoping he'd have a bounce back from the playoffs. I hope Kähkönen comes in with a chip on his shoulder trying to prove to us he's better than his numbers show

Day started rough. Wishing Toffoli and Miller the best. They both did good for this team and deserve to be on a playoff team atm for everything they have done. Definitely would like to see Hatakka and Nolan Foote get another chance in the lineup. It would be amazing to see this team pull a shocker and get into the post-season, but it's going to be a very steep hill to climb. Glad to get Kahkonen and free up some extra cap space for the off-season. There is a part of me that would like to see Vanecek bounce back after doing well last season. Let's see how the remaining games go and build from there.

It did start rough, but yes I want to see Hatakka I really liked the way he played and hope they bring him up but with Desimone there I think he gets a shot next. We have to see Foote at some point this year too, going to be an interesting closeout to the rest of the year especially with 2 new goalies

So refreshing to see some sensible people here. Devils fans all over don’t understand that Fitz isn’t getting “fleeced”. I wouldn’t be surprised if all the picks we acquired plus one of either Kahkonen or Allen get flipped in the off-season for a new, proven starter. These things take time. Just have some patience.

The picks we got will help get something in the offseason. Fitzgerald will either land Markstrom or Ullmark in my opinion and the picks we got will help land them. He said in his presser after the trades that the goal was to have Daws and Schmid develop properly in the AHL and not to rush them like they have been, to have Allen backup and shop for a proven #1 in the summer. Where Kähkönen falls into these plans i dont know but well see. Hes a free agent at years end.

I like this trade..Fitz is hoping to catch lightning in a bottle with one of them. I'm glad he didn't trade away the future for a goalie..

Very happy! To be able to offload Vitek's contract given the season he's had and is still injured is a miracle! Go look at Kähkönen's goals above expected per 60 & compare that to Vitek's. He's a much better option than what we currently had in our stable. Fitzgerald said he's not done. He talked about "Big game hunting" in the offseason.

Mike i thought of you when I saw this trade go down bc you mentioned Kähkönen alot in the comments and how we should get him and we did. Great trade, I know I watched him play alot and his numbers don't justify his play, looked good in games I saw

These are both good moves for setting up the offseason deals. Honestly, I actually feel a lot better now that these moves have been made because it shows an actual direction and focus on what Fitzgerald will be pursuing, rather than being in the dark and not knowing if there will be anything done to address the issues of goaltending and defense. Whatever happens for the rest of this season, at least we know work will be getting done moving forward.

Exactly Walt, those last 2 trades helped give the fans some sense of direction. Viteks gone and Daws and Schmid will be given their time to develop Properly. Allen is the backup and what happens in the offseason will be better than what we had this year, plus throw in a good first round pick for us helps too

I like this goalie trade, frees up Vaneceks last year and gives Kähkönen another look with fresh start. Some games I watched with him he wasn't that bad

I like what they did today.. I give him a B+. Like you said adding a #1 goalie and bulk up and down the lineup is on the summer to do list for Fitz. I have Faith in him.

Me too, I was more upset at giving up a potential 2nd rd for him bc 40 games is attainable, but I agree Kähkönen does have potential but we have to be better on D

Kahkonen is an impending UFA. I doubt he resigns. These are garbage nonsense moves. Fitzgerald gave up on the season and next season all he offers is hope.

Vanecek & Blackwood are the goalie tandem in San Jose, just like they were with the Devils for part of last season. Overall, the trades they made yesterday was meh.

Allen also needs a u.s work visa and only played 5 games in 2024, good move to give him some time. Even at practice on a team with 3 goalies, not getting the same amount of reps

I really put no stock in Kahkonens numbers … he’s been on a AWFUL team, if there’s any way you go from .880 and 3.5 to .910 and 2.6 it’s by getting off that sharks team

I agree, new team could work for him, a change of scenery may be what he needs, but the defense in front of him has to be better. Devils Defense has been bad this year they have to play better

As the main goalie i have to see how he does with us 1st, still young and can become something well have to see but our D has got to play better and more consistent in front of our goalies, im eager to see him & Allen play with us

This was a great move by Fitzgerald. We freed up Viteks 3.4 million next season, thats huge and we got a goalie who might play good with us or might not either way he's a UFA in the offseason.
