First time I heard this song, I thought it was about a women being abused and using makeup to cover it up, to conceal the physical and mental trauma. But then I kept on listening, many, many times, then I realized that the message is that people who do all the mainstream things like putting on vast amounts of makeup or drinking or even smoking or whatever its, are just hiding or covering up a lot of underlying issues, whether it be abuse or depression. This song is amazing and Kendrick is such on of the best rappers to ever be in the business, no doubt about it.
+themondoshow Maybe, I just think this because of the part where he says you don't have to be drunk to have fun and its just the way I interpreted it. But I guess it comes down to the fact that everyone interprets things differently (: (and I know the song continues with Keisha's Song)
this song made me stop drinking alcohol. For some reason the line that goes like "You ain't gotta get drunk to have fun" always seemed to stand out whenever I listened to this song so yeah now I'm a sober and won't ever drink alcohol because of it . Actually the whole Section 80 influenced the life I'm leading right now, Hiiipower made me question my beliefs and I'm glad it did because right now I am truly at peace with myself, in a nutshell, s/o to Kendrick Lamar he makes everyday life music indeed
@Floothecloud section80, overly dedicated and GKMC are mote playable in my opinion, I prefer them to tpab. To me tpab is more of a project/collection to be listened as a whole and seriously. Obv u can listen however u want but those 3 seem more easy to jump into at any point and play in company.
The Hook Is Addictive , The Words In The Verse are deep, The Whole Concept of this song fits an illusion never fulfilled in our imaginative current hip hop state of mind, Wouldn't mind hearing this on a mainstream platform, because it deserves it.
Esharido It really is. I initially poo pooed this album and only listened to ADHD because that song is A+ but one day I let the whole album play and damn, this entire album has just as many amazing hits as good kid maad city. Kendrick is amazing.
How can so many people dislike this track? Thought provoking lyrics, smooth track, simple vocals, what's not to like? Maybe it isn't mainstream enough for most, but those looking for more mainstream are usually missing the point of what we used to call.........music.
$timulated Yeah I had a version of section 80 without this track... It is really corny for a kendrick track but it may grow on me. Asides from that theres nothin Kendricks done ive disliked
Suq Madiq The final line of the girl's verse, even though it's cut off, is far from corny. It gave me chills when I first heard it, similar to the end of Sherane.
+blakedanjr Well Section .80 and good kid, m.A.A.d city got a lot of attention from mainstream listeners. To Pimp a Butterfly and untitled. unmastered (Although, both were recorded on the same era) are what really separates the casual (mainstream) and hardcore fans of Kendrick.
I’m at the edge of crying rn... I’m listening in 2021. This song is bringing back so many warm memories my early high school life. This was one of my favorite songs. I graduated last year... 2020.😢😌🥲
This Guy Gives ME Goosebumps with How Deep He Is. He Says "...To Be Continued, 11." Which Means It Continues on Track 11 With "Keisha's Song". .............Wow..............Took me Weeks To Figure That Out.
When i first listened to this track when it came out i thought it was about the insecurity of women which it kinda is but when she said that i had a black eye i was literally speechless
Another reason why Kendrick is one of THE best rappers to ever rap..... y’all know it too, he can even do tracks like this completely different from any other artist out there! 🐐
Pretty sure a lot of dudes don't like this because they have no way to relate to it honestly. This song speaks much more to women. Don't be an ass and say this song is shit, it definitely isn't.
Kendrick has always a message in his songs, I like listening to songs that I really have to listen to, to understand them. And it's songs that you have to listen back to back, to really understand them, maybe read the lyrics, thats the reason I listen to Kendrick, big Props for the song, and the abrupt end was the shit too.
I love the way you, put it on your eyes The roses on your face light up the sky Those lips are colorful, all of the time, time, time And girl that's fine, but I wanna know do you mind? No makeup today-day-day-day-day-day No makeup today-day-day-day-day-day (today) No makeup today-day-day-day-day-day No makeup today And girl that's fine, but I wanna know do you mind-mind-mind-mind? [Kendrick Lamar] I know she bout to ask me how she look I tell her beautiful, and how long it took for you to put it on? It was early in the morn' She resembled a model out of a MAC book Concentrating on the way the eyeliner thickens I stand behind her and try to figure her vision of prettiness, the wittiness of colors on her skin tone Her complexion in a direction I've outgrown Damn girl, why so much? You bout to blow your cover when you cover up Don't you know your imperfections is a wonderful blessing From Heaven is where you got it from I love your smile, you can do it without style From your lips, all the way to your eyebrows It's the beauty in her, but when the makeup occur I don't see it, all I see is a blur [Chorus] [Kendrick Lamar (female)] I know she bout to ask me how she look I tell her beautiful, and how long it took for you to put it on? It was early in the morn' She resembled a model out of a MAC book (Concentrating on the way my) eyeliner thickens (He stand behind me and try to) figure her vision (of prettiness, the wittiness of colors on my skin tone My complexion in a direction) I've outgrown (I feel like it's not enough I can never put on too much makeup Yeah I know) your imperfections (I be constantly stressing From him is where I get it from) They tell me I need to) smile (at least once in a while I hate my lips, my nose, my) eyebrows (It's the beauty in me, but what he don't see is that I had a black eye) [beep] To be continued, eleven "Ladies and gentlemen" And you ain't gotta get drunk to have fun You ain't gotta get drunk to have fun And you ain't gotta get drunk to have fun You ain't gotta get drunk to have fun
My god this song is layered in so many ways. A song that may seem to be about self-beauty, but the one line at 2:46 changes the entire narrative. Such genius
***** Claiming it sounds like Linkin Park implies that it's similar in structure, composition, and or melody. I really don't hear the resemblance. Also I'm pretty sure she was trying to make fun of the song and its meaning by comparing it to Linkin Park...
To all those criticizing this song saying it isn't up to par as some of other Kendrick's works, this song, like most songs on Section.80 sounds best when listened while high. You can literally feel Kendrick "communicating" with your entire mind while you're high and you realize all the deep meanings behind the lyrics, which is simply mind blowing. Try lighting one up and give this song a listen. I guarantee it will change your perspective.
I get what your saying and its true sure i understand what the meaning of the song sober but if you get high you can feel the song and you actually enjoy it and understand it better than if you were sober
A light skin teen. Did you miss the most important part of this song? Most little teen boy bands don't sing about abuse and the struggle to cover and hide it.
+Lindsay Dana Excuse you? Dark skinned women can be and are abused as well. Not sure if I took your comment out of context, but that first line rubbed me the wrong way.
Way out of context the previous comments were a long the lines of a "light skinned teen" writing this song as in Justin beiber, one direction ext. You should find the comment and it will make more senses
i don't have any resentment toward pop bands, i feel like they aren't specifically ignoring the issues that plague society, but they are pretty much locked in to singing about general 'party song' topics due to pressure from record companies and the risk of isolating a margin of their listeners.
room It's also about wanting to make easy-money, in a world where it's becoming increasingly difficult for many. People always point out the vast difference between "mainstream" and "underground" music. Vague but useful terms (that can overlap). There truly is a bit of a difference in quality, usually. Some people care about their art more than plain money and 15-minute fame.
Lol she said domestic violence this song is to show women need to be happy with themselves to stop altering to try and impress the world that there when we see you as beautiful no matter what you look like it's not what you put on its who you are listen to the song
It represents people hiding deep issues with their looks. Depression for example, people smile when they're depressed to hide it. So this just represents that thought in general.
