"It's not really giving me a setting" The setting is a shitty motel parking lot. This is not a joke.

No More Heroes is quite literally a hack and slash as it was originally a wii game where you were swinging the wiimote around, and because the Beam Katana would run out of charge you would charge it just using a repeated up and down motion. Yes, it's 100% intentional. I should add that a lot of the repetitive nature of the songs come from the gameplay, more often than not the bosses like to talk to the protagonist, as well as attack voice lines and whatnot going on, the music tends to be a little straightforward so you can focus on just killing the enemy. The black and white Wii game you were thinking of is MadWorld, which was actually made by Platinum Games, same company that went on to make Nier Automata. Iirc, the controversy wasn't that big of a deal, Germany didn't allow it to be sold and people were upset that family-friendly Nintendo was allowing it to exist on their console. The Wii actually did end up being the last time we got a lot of M rated games though.

A small correction, you don't swing the remote around all the time during combat, you move the remote up and down to determine if the attack is high or low, you swing for the wrestling moves, test of strength and the finishers. But the minigames are another story 😂.

Pleather for Breakfast is the theme for the 2nd Rank assassin, Bad Girl, she made it up the rankings and got jaded with the life that she just drinks and kills her henchmen in gimp suits all day, she dresses in a pink skimpy lolita dress and in the story she's a parallel to the mc, Travis Touchdown, a reflection of what he can become if he continues down the path of becoming the Rank 1 assassin. Always chasing a high whether its from killing, drugs, alcohol or sex the assassin life isnt a happy one and i believe it's this fight specifically that makes Travis leave the assassin association after he becomes #1 so he never turns into any of the messed up people he fought on the way there but ofc you can never leave the past without it coming back to bite you in the ass which leads to the second, third, and the spinoff game

Probably my personal favorite character themes from NMH 1, and it's pretty cool testament of the composer and character designer to get the personalities down of both characters. Would love to see you try the game out actually! It's on the switch now too and it's not too long of a game, it's definitely quirky since it comes from Suda51. Also the game you're talking about around 19:50 is Madworld, definitely remember at the time the talk about it because of it being unabashedly rated M for the Wii.

The No More Heroes games were directed by Goichi Suda, popularly known as "Suda51". Not sure how big of a movie guy you are, but Suda51 is sometimes compared to Quentin Tarantino. Suda51's games are really violent, have over-the-top humour, and have really quirky characters. His games have a really unique tone from a lot of games out there, which draws me to him as someone who enjoys unique experiences in video games.

3:50 "guessing this is a fight or something" my friend, that does not do "We Are Finally Cowboys" justice.. it's not just "A" fight...it's *THE* fight. The final battle against the secret boss of the game, another dude wielding a Beam Katana just like you, who is revealed to be your TWIN BROTHER...all this in the motel parking lot of where you live. This fight..I kid you not...takes place just after Henry(the boss and your brother) saves you from a guy who busted in your bathroom to kill you whilst you were taking a shit. Yup...it's THAT type of game.

Jun Fukuda is the other composer for this game and its squeals. He usually works with Masafumi Takada most as an guitarest; he even arranged butter building for smash bros brawl. He compoesd these two song you reacted. He even arranged for your past reaction NMH 2 song Philistine.

The No More Heroes games have so many bangers, and knowing the context for the battles only makes them better. I can't wait to see your reaction to "Season of the Samurai". It's a long one, but I think you would absolutely love it.

No More Heroes is... it's something, man. The premise of the first game goes something like this: The main character is a guy named Travis Touchdown, a dude who decides one day he's going to become the greatest assassin in the world, which of course requires fighting the ten highest ranked assassins in the world. To do this, he essentially buys a lightsaber off of EBay and starts challenging these assassins to duels to the death. Travis Touchdown himself is essentially an obnoxious parody of the kind of tryhard edgelord protagonist that was popular in the mid-2000s, when this first released. He's chauvinistic, lazy, selfish, and kind of a jerk to even the people he considers friends, a hero in only the loosest sense of the word. The game itself is similarly irreverent, with various aspects of its design clearly intended to mock certain popular game design tropes, and sometimes just taking the piss (quite literally, since the save points in the game are bathrooms). I'm not entirely sure I'd recommend playing No More Heroes, since it can be a bit of a slog even for fans of the genre, but it's definitely worth looking up a playthrough to get an idea of just how nuts it can get.

No More Heroes is one of my favorite series of all time. The 2nd games soundtrack gets alot of praise, but the 1st game also has some incredible tracks! You need to listen to more, man! And give the first game a shot if you get the chance!

The context behind Bad girl is that she's kinda like a Harley Queen before the actual Harley. She's a bat wielding psycho, her art shows her happy with her pretty dress and all, but when you actually fight her she's completely wasted and looking like shit. Also the name of the song might be because in one of her attacks she throws BDSM Gimps at you 😂 One personal favorite moment of her was me falling into one of her attacks, where she pretends to be vulnerable and break down crying, and if you attack her during that, she hops onto you and instantly kills you with a brutal beating. She's a fan favorite 👍

I haven't played 3 yet (it's in my backlog) but the first two games are basically boss rush games where the entire focus of the game is the unique, stylish and memorable boss fights. There is some lower stakes gameplay in between the bosses, but the boss fights are *the* reason to play the games really. I understand you're either about to play, or are already playing Furi Jesse, so think along those sort of lines in terms of structure. Travis the main character saves up money and buys a "Beam Katana" (lightsaber) in an online auction, and decides he's going to use it and his wrestling moves to become a professional assassin. He meets a very attractive french woman who introduces him to a league of assassins and tells Travis that if he kills his way up the ranks to become number 1, she'll have sex with him. Travis is a nerdy otaku, so he immediately agrees to this, and that's the plot. There's plenty of bad language, over the top violence and tropes, with some tiny bits of introspection and almost philosophising too from what I can remember. Buy and large, they're very straightforward games. Almost all of the notable music from the franchise are the different boss themes. As far as I know, the titles of the songs don't usually make any sense, but once you play the games for yourself it's easy to identify which fights they're from because you form memories to associate the song with the boss.

Two of my favorites from this game and this series. For the most part the game is only bosses (there are technically some other elements but they're intentionally monotonous "jobs" that the main character, Travis Touchdown, is trying to get away from by getting into the exciting world of assassin battles). So for the most part the game is 1v1 boss battles against ranked assassins, each with their own strange personality and style that you have to figure out how to counter when you fight them.

For me, the works that immediately come to mind are digimon story: cyber sleuth & its partner game, hacker's memory. Those soundtracks are ridiculously good. The naming convention of his songs seems to be weird on purpose at times. For example, 1 of my favorite songs from digimon story is called Hope ster. (Yes, that space is intentional.) Other songs have names like wandering in a mayohiga & momentary hummingbird. The composer is mainly known for dangaronpa, though, which in places, digimon story has the same "flavor" music wise, if that makes any sense. The theme related to working on cases in cyber sleuth reminds me of some song I forgetting the name of from danganronpa a bit. Also, the battle themes in digimon story are awesome! They perfectly capture the, "you're in a digital world dealing with digital threats that WILL kill you," feelings of the battles.

I randomly started listening to songs from No More Heroes, and one track I really gravitated towards was Rocket Surgeon. I dunno what it is about that one, but it really just hypnotized me and I listened to it non-stop for a week or two But in regards to The Matrix sequels, I remember Reloaded being... okay, and Revolutions not good. I remember watching Reloaded and watching a fight scene at a playground or something and thinking "They did not understand why the fight scenes in the first one were so good" because of all the CG stuff they did. I guess it makes sense because Neo is THE ONE, but I don't care about that if what I'm watching isn't good. And I don't remember being as interested in the philosophical stuff as the first movie.

This has layers, but before everything, the black-white-red Wii game you were talking about is probably MadWorld (in which case I highly suggest to listen to Look Pimpin'). It is not associated with No More Heroes, but it's almost the same level of bloody and bizarre. Now, sticking on NMH1 info (because there's more context and spoilers may not make sense anyway but we would be here all day)... There's an United Assassins Association (UAA) with a ranking system where you kill to climb to the top, including those above you. Travis, the main character, wanted to get into Rank 1; at first for the money, the servitude, the luxury and even s3x, but also for personal reasons. The battle with Henry is, aside from an extra boss, the only fight in the entire game and franchise (aside from Travis Strikes Again as a whole) which is NOT related to the UAA. Paradoxically, this is the most honorable fight in the series, as when they end the battle they reveal the actual plot right there: At a parking lot, two lightsaber warriors at the midst of a battle, with nowhere else to go but forward, until they can finally reach it. The one and only paradise. Hence why "We are finally cowboys". In contrast, Travis' previous journey in the UAA was one heck of a ride. From fake superheroes to babes who have taught him the value of life, Rank 2 is the realization for everything. There's a baseball-like room with putrid meat just below. The air is filled with beer and blood, but you get the feeling there's also an erotic aroma. A conveyor belt brings to the scene many trapped and deranged criminals, tied in a clear BDSM way, only to get killed by you and your opponent. A deranged alcoholic psycho woman, dressed on the clothes of a child who's no more, with a nailed bat that keeps what remains of her identity. She was in this for so long that almost everyone didn't care about her name, including Travis back then. She was just the Bad Girl that everyone loved to see in action. Did you know that pleather is not actual leather, but it's still used as clothing for some erotic costumes and stuff? Well, without getting deeper into that, you could say that she ate "Pleather for Breakfast". Worst thing for Travis: For someone who idolized the UAA and its garden of madness, this was the life of Rank 2. Oh, and they are funnily enough the only two bosses with insta kill "moves" in the franchise. Henry by charging his best attack and putting the blame on you for not stopping it. Bad Girl by faking a cry and batting you to death if you attack her there; something odd since she truly cries and gets vulnerable once in the battle, but she's far too gone to notice it immediatly.

The title Pleather for Breakfast probably has something to do with the fact that when your man Travis rolls up for this fight, he finds the boss, Bad Girl, just casually hanging out in her hideout under the baseball stadium, killing time by smashing in the skulls of some dudes clad in bdsm gear fed into the room on a conveyor belt with a baseball bat. ... Don't ask I enjoy the baseball game touches to her music, that keyboard sound which you'd associate with a homerun celebration, though comparisons to a club work well all things considered. She particularly stands out as an entry to the game because past fights have been with superpowered fighters with high tech weaponry or masters of their respective arts, but then this alcoholic chick with a baseball bat outranks all of them simply fighting with dirty tactics and pure rage filled aggression.

I found the sound effects and voice lines really overpowered a lot of the music in this game. I find, lately, when given the option, it's best to reduce sfx and voice volumes, with voice a bit higher than sfx, and music a bit higher than voice (though interchangeable, depending on how much voice matters). Consequently, the NMH songs that stand out most to me are the tracks that continue to play in between fights, or that play in menus. NMH2's level select music (Surf Santa Destroy) is a go-to favorite of mine, without it even using the main theme's leitmotif much (like SO many other songs in the game). Takada's done music for a ton of other games, but some curious and relevant inclusions in his resume are The Silver Case and The 25th Ward, dark detective(ish)-themed visual novels that are by sheer technicality in the same series as the No More Heroes games (the "Kill the Past" series, which is comprised of various thematically-connected games by Grasshopper Manufacture. It's an interesting deep dive. The Silver Case in particular has some very unique sounds to it.
