Has anyone ever told you to cut down on salt in your diet, but you are desperate to have something on your table to sprinkle on your food? Or maybe you want something to add to your cooking that adds a similar brightness that salt does.
Today I am going to test out five different kinds of salt substitutes that could replace the salt on your table, but do they taste good and are they better than salt? That is what I am going to find out by taste testing:
- Mrs. Dash Table Blend
- Morton's Salt Substitute
- No Salt Sodium Free Salt Alternative
- Benson's Table Tasty
- Spiceology Everything Bagel

Working as a kidney doctor, I found that my patients were often unaware of just how important diet and lifestyle were and how often they felt unsupported by generic advice to “eat healthy”.
The home cook in me hated hearing this, so I set out to find a better way. I began to combine my medical training and love of food, making videos of simple recipes that were based on science and packed with flavor. Instead of just saying “eat healthy” to my patients, I could give them the resources they needed to make a real difference in their health.
Kidney doctor, passionate home cook, and RU-vid sensation Dr Blake Shusterman empowers people to proactively manage their health by stepping into the kitchen. The author of several cookbooks with over 100,000 RU-vid subscribers, The Cooking Doc® believes anyone, at any age can transform their health with small changes that make a big difference. Based on science and packed with flavor, Dr. Blake’s simple recipes have inspired home cooks everywhere to change their diet, retrain their taste buds, and transform their health.

If you are watching this video, then you really want to reduce your sodium intake. I've loved salt most of my life. I prefer salty over sweet. Here is my take on the Morton's Salt Substitute and the No Salt products. Think of your palette as a muscle. The more you exercise it, the stronger it gets. When you first begin to use these two products, you will taste the difference between them and salt. However....after you have used these products exclusively for say 3 weeks, kept sodium out of your diet completely, you will no longer be able to tell the difference between them and real salt. You simply need to stick with them for a period of time exclusively in the total absence of salt. Think of it like exercising your taste buds. As to the difference, the Morton's is more powdery and the No Salt is closer to the consistency of table salt. I prefer the No Salt on just about everything over the Morton's, with the exception of food where you need a more powdery "salt" like popcorn. I hope this has helped you.

I quit using salt quite a while ago, years. At first I missed the salt in food but now many foods taste salty to me as they are, some foods actually taste too salty especially cottage cheese because it actually has a lot of salt in it so I eat it rarely. I love V8 juice and when I first switch to low sodium it tasted funny but now it actually tastes salty, and I could actually go for something that has even less salt. So it's true that the longer you go without using salt the easier it gets to not need salt.

Thanks. Good info. I’ve been using the benson salt replacement for awhile. It does a pretty good job. Depending on what I’m cooking, I will use that along with just a pinch of salt so it allows me to cut back on the salt in a huge way. Most of the time I just use it by itself. My taste buds have definitely changed as far as salt is concerned. If I pick up a corn chip the heavy salt taste is just nasty and bitter. Can’t even eat it. Thank you for what you do. You’ve been my biggest source of information and encouragement. I have your book and am ready to read more about allowing more real plant food into my diet. Keep up the good work!

Just stumbled across this channel because I’m looking for anything that will help me on an extremely low sodium diet that I was put on. i’m not only on a 1500 mg sodium diet, but also on a low fat, low cholesterol, diabetic diet, so all of that combined doesn’t leave me very much food choices and I’m ready to pull my hair out! At times I’m so hungry I could eat my shoe! Low sodium diet was difficult enough but with all these other lifestyles I have to follow now I really need some help!😩🤦‍♀️😊. I found low sodium products on Amazon which have helped, so for anybody out there herb ox put out no sodium beef and chicken bullion powder which really helps out if you put it in your ground chicken breast or ground lean beef, but I haven’t found a salt substitute yet that doesn’t leave a metallic taste. Also Amazon carries Haines sodium free baking powder which has been a lifesaver for biscuits, pancakes, and other baking goods, also EN ER GE sodium free baking soda is available on Amazon. Just some tips for my fellow low sodium travelers!

I am a salt lover but have had to cut out salt due to kidney disease. I agree Mrs. Dash is not a good replacement, the only one I like is the Southwestern flavor. Not being able to add salt sucks. There are very few seasonings that are good replacements for salt if you are one that likes flavor.

I'm going to order the Benson's Table Tasty. I stopped eating salt about four days ago. My back went out, and I am overweight. I was reading some articles on experiments with salt and obesity with people and also with rats. The conclusion is that salt, beyond the edema, causes hunger, overeating and obesity. It's not food that makes us fat, it's what's IN the foods. I've noticed that my appetite is definitely lower, but it took my body about three days to get rid of the sodium in my digestive tract. The third day I noticed a big change in less hunger. I have used a couple of TBSP of all-fruit (no sugar) jelly for potatoes, meats, etc. I also use ghee (no salt), which helps a ton. For lunch I just had two boiled chicken thighs with carrots, and allowed for one TBSP of mayo (95 gm sodium). Delicious. I've been able to keep my sodium below 400-500mg. I hope I can eat less and lose weight but without being hungry.

I have found that learning to eat what tastes good to me without salt is the best I can do, long-term for consistency. That really restricts my options for food (seafood, baked sweet or red potatoes, fresh fruits/veg, unsalted nuts, hint of salt wheat thins). But I don’t know what else to do.

The Potassium/ Chloride salt substitute is something you get used to as my husband has high blood pressure. At least the Morton’s LITE Salt does include being iodized. On a cucumber is a bad test, try it on a corn cob boiled, and the Morton’s Salt is quite nice. For popcorn, I put Bragg’s Liquid Aminos which is great in an atomizer spray bottle in making fat-free popcorn quite enjoyable popped in the microwave. We use an Or Ollie Reddenbacher’s popcorn bowl designed to use in the microwave is perfect using just 1/3 Cup of popcorn seeds in their bowl is perfect every time. 1/3 Cup of unpopped popcorn kernels works perfectly even if a microwave in our RV,

Looks to me like you are eating pickled cucumber because the slices look awfully green on the inside. Fresh cucumber slices, on the other hand would look much more pale on the inside and have less bend to them (although the "cucumber" spears you were eating did sound quite crunchy...kind of like refrigerated deli style pickle spears). So all of those sodium free "salt" alternatives were not given a fair shake realistically if you were adding them to pickle slices which are already quite salty. I am in congestive heart failure and I am currently using No Salt and I really enjoy it. However, I will be giving some of the other ones you featured a try. Thank you for your video.

Please be careful in recommending some of these for kidney patients. Some of them use potassium carbonate as a salt replacement, which is very bad for kidney patients as they don't have the ability to filter out phosphorus or potassium. Would you - "The Cooking Doc" - *PLEASE* give me your thoughts on using the product "No Salt" / *STRICTLY* as a "cheat" for increasing potassium levels. I recently went to the ER for a seizure. (50 yrs old - never had a seizure in my life) - The bloodwork they did, they came back stumped with the only explanation being "Your potassium was a little low." Soooo..... I started researching. 4700mg of Potassium is daily recommended value. Great. Awesome. Started looking online for vitamin supplements only to find another Dr. saying I'd have to take 42 tablets *EVERY DAY* to reach 4700mg.... That's a lot of pills. / Scratch that idea. Found a weight lifting guy that straight up said he uses "No Salt" *strictly* for roughly 1/3rd to 1/2 of the daily dose - he gets the rest by eating the correct foods. Sounded promising. I bought some. Now the weight lifting guy / (health nut) / said he straight up "ate" 1 whole teaspoon a day. He'd pour 1 teaspoon of the No Salt onto the teaspoon, put it in his mouth and wash it down with water. It was like medicine to him. That's really close to 1/2 the daily recommended value and in my mind I'm thinking > I can do that. But at what cost?????? ...... there is no miracle pill but the No Salt strictly as a semi-quasi supplement for potassium seems to make sense to me...... but again, at what cost???? 1tsp per day seems reasonable to me. It's better than eating 7 bananas every day. (That's absurd) - Seems like a pretty decent "head start" on getting my daily potassium value but there's gotta be a gotcha in there somewhere. Forget about taste on foods. My question has nothing to do with taste on foods. It's about getting the correct amount of potassium every day and NO SALT seems like a logical alternative for at least 1/2 ...... not all. *PLEASE ADVISE* - Thank you. - Everyone......
