No Stress Trip to the Beach in my Ioniq5 (No Thanks to Electrify America)

In this video, I decided to take a spontaneous day trip to the beach to watch the sunset in my 2022 Hyundai Ioniq5 Limited. Despite what some EV opponents will claim, spontaneous trips in EVs are totally do-able. The car was only charged to about 78% when I left the house, but I still had enough electricity to easily make it to my destination and part of the way back before charging.
The Ioniq5 is a great road trip car. It is very comfortable and drama-free. However, Electrify America and it's on-going reliability issues continue to plague the non-Tesla EV ownership experience, especially in states where EA is the only charging network with greater than 62kW DC fast charging (like Oregon, where I live).
Join me for a (mostly) no-stress trip to the Oregon coast to watch the sunset on an unseasonably nice December day.

Interesting, thanks for sharing. I’m glad that their reach extends beyond just Oregon. Funny that it’s sold as a premium product elsewhere because it’s typically very reasonably priced here. Thanks for watching!

Beautiful footage of the sunset over the water. Tesla's network works very well, showing that its possible to have a reliable, large network. (Obviously Tesla has some advantages, its not apples to apples but I don't think these advantages explain most of the EA reliability problems. For example, maybe the credit card reader problems but not basic power management failures.) EA had a lot of good excuses for its problems at the beginning. But it peaked and now has been declining for over 2 years (in terms of reliability). You can try to blame COVID but Tesla's network seems to be relatively unaffected during the same period of time. At some point you have to point to EA management.

Agreed. The Supercharger network is generally more reliable than EA. It wouldn’t be as much of an issue if we had more high speed CCS charging options, but here in Oregon at least, we just don’t. Tesla owners are lucky that the Supercharger network is generally pretty reliable because it’s the only option for many Tesla owners (without buying an expensive adapter, assuming their specific vehicle supports it). The Supercharger network has the benefit of being designed to work on one make of car. They don’t have to be too concerned about designing for a wide range of compatibility. They aren’t perfect; I’ve come across plenty of broken or de-rated superchargers, but if one individual supercharger is broken, there is usually another one you can move to. EA used to be the same, but now that there are so many other CCS cars on the road and EA has done very little to expand, that often isn’t an option anymore. There are also some pretty reliable CCS networks (outside of Oregon). It can be done, EA just isn’t doing it yet.

So sad to see yet another instance of EA failing. Since this was close to 2 months ago, do you know if things have changed?

My more recent experiences have been a little better. The Albany EA seems to be working now. They’re also replacing the broken hardware at the Springfield location that I’ve complained about in multiple videos. I haven’t been back to the Newport location since this video, so I can’t comment on that. Thanks for watching!

Well actually, the mountains are the coast range but who's keeping track. EVCS is slow and expensive but they have never let me down. I use their level 2 near work when I need to top off.

You are correct on the name of the mountain range. Not sure why I said Cascade range in the video. I guess we’re lucky to have more than one mountain range on the west coast, although we might not feel so lucky when “The Big One” hits. You’re right about EVCS, but aside from a few Pacific Power/ChargePoint locations, they’re one of the only other options for DC fast charging in Oregon. I have another video coming out about this in the next few weeks.
