"Overcoming negative emotions" was the theme of the entire Pandaria expansion. The "Sha"s are manifestations of negative emotions, and they were prime figures as bosses for players to fight.

Well, it's a huge compliment to say this is a complex story. It's really that Mists of Pandaria was peak writing for World of Warcraft, Shadowlands is introducing some good ideas but with the same age old WoW problem of just pasting it on top of a character that has absolutely no real reason to do/want it. If the writers had been honest from the start of the MMO, undead never would have joined either faction they would simply have been a 3rd faction or enemies as Sylvanas has absolutely no reason to actually join a faction, neither of which would want her anyways, undead are evil, period, the very basis of the idea of undeath is corruption of the final stage of life. I'm not saying maybe some undead have a mind maybe some wouldn't be entirely evil and might work with a faction, but they would never be part of one nor lead one there's no logic to any of the decisions that have brought us to Shadowlands but that's my 2 cents as ya I just don't agree with the fundamental idea of the horde inclusion of undead.

This was a good story pick for you, good for a reaction. In Pandaria, the Sha, are physical manifestations of negative emotions. Doubt, despair, anger, etc. If these emotions "boil over", they can literally come alive and kill you. For all those 10,000 years since the Legion invaded, Pandaria was hidden from the world. Only a myth and never discovered until after the Legion invaded and failed a second time. Fun Fact from the game: Pandaren are the only race that can choose either side, Alliance or Horde.

A lot of people didn't like the Asian aesthetic. But thinking back it had some of my favourite raid bosses since Ulduar and it was the first Expansion that really managed to put a lot of great storytelling into the game and didn't just keep it in the Books. Cata tried that, and was very succesfull in some of the reworked zones, but imo compleatly failed doing that in the endgame content. While every patch in MoP just brought great new story events and quests to the game. And even changed some old world zones to reflect the current events.

One of my favorites! Really touching tale. Unfortunately, Shaohao missed the seventh and greatest 'Sha' burden- Pride. Until the expansion, that is.

Loved, loved, loved re-watching this with your reactions. When Mists of Pandaria (MoP) was announced, there was a loud backlash from a portion of the players arguing that this was making the game more geared towards kids ("Kung Fu Panda in my game? No, thanks!"). The Pandaren were introduced to the Warcraft games before Kung Fu Panda came out, but even then they were treated by many players as a joke race. I think this connotation of Pandas = Childish prevented many from simply enjoying a different type of story.

@veradrost9654
@veradrost9654 3 года назад
To be fair, the pandaren *ARE* very childish and even Blizzard treated them as a joke race. They're bouncy, fluffy and painfully cute, have memey kazoo music and have a silly, animated way of speaking. Their quests were all jokes and memes. None of them were the fierce, courageous bears that you see in these animations. Not to mention that ninjas have been a theme in children's shows and stories for decades now, because they're 'cool' and 'edgy'. It was a perfect storm. If you look closer, Pandaria's story is actually very mature, but there was a weird childish filter over it. Even these animated backstories about Emperor Shaohao feel like an old Chinese myth dumbed down and made cuter for children, filtering out any real violence or dark themes. They still are extremely hard to include in the WoW universe because of their art direction. There's nothing wrong with bears (or pandas) being a playable race. Their art direction was simply too childish for many. I like the Pandaren. I don't really care for them in WoW. The Tauren never received this kind of backlash, and for good reason, but in the end they are literally just walking cows. What's the difference? Art direction.
@darkmyro
@darkmyro 3 года назад
@@veradrost9654 tuaren are kinda treated very silly in wow also. What I think helps them more than art direction is two things. Precedent and timing. Minotaurs are a classic fantasy trope and that's what the tuaren basically are. You have The pandaren who've have been in warcraft since its RTS days. Lore wise chen stormstout is a hero and helped found orgrimmar. Most players aren't familiar with any of that though. I find it funny that Mop is now a very beloved expansion maybe even now one of the most popular. Despite how negative a reaction people had to it. Time has completely changed peoples opinion cause we've had, far worse expansions far more serious expansions(looking at you wod) They were a highly demanded race in wow too. That being said, Pandaren don't really have that history in fiction because they're a purely Warcraft invention. I also feel like the movie kung fu panda colored people's perception of the whole race. If the pandaren had come out say in the burning crusade like orginally planned, then they probably would have been viewed better. So because they waited so long, people who were unfamiliar with the pandaren saw it as a cash grab at the Chinese market that had grown more popular and a jokey appeal to kids because of a popular children's movie with similar aesthetic. I completely disagree with you about art direction for the most part. Warcraft has always been a silly game full of silly references. The pandaren are less silly than say the gnomes for instance.(I'd even argue the gnomes are less fleshed out then the pandaren and there been in the game since launch). Pandora is definitely a more colorful expansion color wise and has very Asian inspired esthetics, but it's no more sillier than most expansions.
@fightingfaerie
@fightingfaerie 3 года назад
@@veradrost9654 I have to agree that Blizzard was a bit hypocritical with MoP. They wanted people to take it seriously as an expansion and not a joke, but they continued to treat the Pandaren as jokes. I mean their "language" is just Nom nom nom. It still kinda pisses me off, especially as a role-player. Playing a Pandaren you can't speak in your native tongue to other Pandaren because what other people see is so immersion breaking. Every single other race has actual made up languages, or at least an algorithm for them.

I think the storyLine was regarded as fine by the community. It was the overarching theme, that was So different to what came before (and after), that put some people off. It'a also sort of weird with the current Blizzard vs/with China these days. This seemed to be an obvious invitation even back then to the Chinese, and now is looked on in a suspicious kind of way. The content, gameplay and such are regarded well in retrospective though.

mother always said to us "all the answers you seek, are inside you" as the emperor is finding knowledge in his home, his land, his culture, his people. you too have the answers inside of you, a therapist task is not to give you answers, but to help you find them inside you. as we say in my country "you must know where you come from, to know where you're going" look at you first, to find your doubts and fears first, then find the answers inside of you as well. just as Shao Hao did. n.n

It does make sense why we keep on fighting each other, even after we heard the lessions of pandaria. Sylvanas says it in the Battle for Azeroth intro Cinematic: "We have forgotten, was makes us strong." She means the fighting against each other. Only because there is basically a constant war going on, we were able to beat the many threats and foes that came to azeroth and will come in the future.
@gerardlacroix6015
@gerardlacroix6015 3 года назад
These are pretty philosophical questions. One could ask what is really strenght, or is conflict the only option ? After all, that's more or less the moral of this story. Shaohao choose to not fight, but rather deflect. Because we, too, are burdened, we brought most of Azeroth's calamities upon ourselves, and because we did, we do not have; now, the luxury of reflecting on our mistakes... Which, in turn, makes us repeat them. Sylvanas has a very practical way of thinking. She thinks the univers is determined, and thus people have nothing else than the illusion of free will, and a path unknowingly destined, and that only sheer strenght will help her break through fate to gain freedom by force. But it's not what she means by "We have forgotten what makes us strong", because conflict, to her eyes, are meaningless in the grand scheme of things. Battling again and again to one day die, either at the end of the opposite faction or any other "threats" Azeroth faces, have no real difference against dying of old age anyway... And in the end, everyone ends up in the same place. She has; which is quite logical given her life/unlife and what she went throug; as well as her condition of undead, a pretty nihilistic view of how the existence is working. Nothing matters, as fate is already rigged against you, making you go the way you're intended to go.
@Ferdawoon
@Ferdawoon 3 года назад
When you play through MoP and visit the Mantid, they say that they swarm the Wall once every hundred years (or something like that) to weed out the weaker bloodlines and keep the strong. The Pandarens echo it in a similar way I think, or if it is one of the Celestials that mention it: That just as the Mantid attack to return with only their strong, as will the Pandaren. And the same thought occured to Wrathion during the epxpansion where he wanted Horde and Alliance to fight so that the winning team would be strong enough to fight off the Legion.

Ages before even the Well of Eternity book, there was a godly battle between titans and old gods on the planet. Big boss Titan *literally* ripped one of the lovecraftian-ass Old Gods out of the planet, which created the Well of Eternity. (It's basically a big ol' wound in the planet.) When players were playing through Pandaria, we were playing against these Shas. Doubt, fear, anger, etc. They were lingering echos of the defeated Old God still at play in Pandaria. This animated short ties this together really nicely.

Semi-relevant but hopefully fun lore dump: The Sha are manifestations of negative emotions, but they don't just come from people. Remember how there were four Old Gods on Azeroth that the Titans fought against? The strongest of them, Y'Shaarj (pronounced "Yah-Sha-Raj") was ripped out of the planet directly by the Titans. This caused the wound in the world that was patched up and turned into the Well of Eternity. With his final breath Y'Shaarj cursed the land where his body was flung. This curse is the source of the Sha. Beneath the Vale of Eternal Blossoms at the heart if Pandaria, we found a Titan vault containing the still-beating heart of Y'Shaarj. When Garrosh Hellscream tried to weaponize it, the process nuked the whole Vale and summoned the seventh Sha, which Shaohao never conquered. This was the Sha of Pride. Also, the Mantid, like other insectoid races on Azeroth, were made by the Old Gods. They specifically worshipped Y'Shaarj. When Garrosh took on the Old God's power, they sided with him. Final bit of info: The mists Shaohao created kept anyone from finding Pandaria for thousands of years. It was finally disrupted by the Cataclysm, when Deathwing returned and messed the world up with natural disasters. That's why we were able to find it and go there the following expansion.

This movie narrates what's happening with players during MoP expansion also. All this locations are present and accessible by players. The August Celestials: Red Crane, Black Ox, White Tiger and Jade Serpent can be spoken to. They give players quests and blessings. All the Sha are awake again, and defeating them gives you cool title: the Tranquil Master It requires players to kill all the Shas in Pandaria. Love your videos and reactions! =) To your question at the end: The expansion ends with Horde+Alliance teaming up to defeat the former Horde Warchief (long story :P) and they even have some kind of trial to decide his punishment. At this point all the recent points of contention between the two factions have been cleared, so it felt like they could just negotiate a peace deal and live happily every after. The relation between them is often a bit strange, because on one hand they are supposed to have different moral directions and constantly clash with each other, but on the other they always have to team up to overcome all the world-threatening stuff that keeps coming with every new expansion. Also the devs seem to have a habit of writing all the races as just regular humans in different skins, so you sometimes end up wondering why they are fighting if they all just want the same.

"The monkey king" is based on Sun Wukong, from Journey to the West, one of the great chinese novels. I think wukong himself is based on Hanuman but anyway, the monkey king is usually represented as a carefree happy-go-lucky trickster and since most works of fiction with a monkey king have being inspired by that one it kinda explains why he'd be the one to laugh at being blown away by wind xD

Yeah Emperor Shaohao is not the same character as Chen Stormstout (aka the Pandaren from the MoP cinematic) while both appear as NPCs in Mists of Pandaria they are always separate characters, Chen is as far as we know a normal Pandaren who is just a famous Brewmaster (a type of Pandaren monk) and adventurer but still just a regular mortal, while in the "current" time of WoW Shaohao is effectively a demigod.

quick lore recap.... so if you recall from Hidden Azeroth's complete history video, the Titans found Azeroth infected with Old Gods and tried to fight them. The leader, known as Aman'thul, ripped out one of the old gods, named Y'shaarj, from the center of Azeroth and realized it was a huge mistake because it left a huge crater that almost killed the sleeping titan soul. Y'shaarj was also called the God of Seven Heads, and when he was killed, he cursed the land with his last breath, which became the seven Sha. Think of the seven deadly sins but in WoW lore. Anger, Despair, Doubt, Fear, Hatred, Violence, Pride. They filled the crater that was created with enchanted water to heal the land, which was then called the Well of Eternity, and which fueled the evolution of fauna to Trolls, to Elves.

The thing to know about the World of Warcraft is that the old hatreds are hard to stop... The big baddie from Mists of Pandaria leads us to Warlords of Dreanor (about 32-35 years into the past) and does some timey wimey shenanigans to make and alternate universe...but then that expansion leads us to Legion where we team up again (kind of) to defeat the Burning Legion. Then that expansion leads us to Battle for Azeroth where we just full on fight each other (until we have to join up to fight another big bad), and that leads us to where we are now in Shadowlands...

I believe the “bear in the hat” in the MoP cinematic is Chen Stormstout, a badass fighter, wanderer, and brewmaster who loves developing new brews of beer to make people happy. In other words, great guy. Also he has a niece, LiLi, who’s maybe a teenager and is a badass fighter herself.

Pandaria was such an underappreciated chapter in Warcraft lore because fans felt it was too out of place among the more traditional "elves and dragons" fantasy but in retrospect it's nearly unanimous agreement that it had some of the best writing the franchise has ever had. The players were made to overcome manifestations of their own emotions as well as your typical bad guys and the journey was all the more rewarding because of it.

So there are more cartoons like this for every WoW's expansion forward: Lords of War - for the Warlords of Draenor (WoD); Harbingers - Legion, it may be the best one, imho; Warbringers - for the Battle for Azeroth (BfA), i believe you've already seen them; Afterlives - Shadowlands, the latest one. So these series are created to introduce or re-introduce players or viewers (like in your case) to the main characters of this expansion, there are more story with these characters further into expansion in form of notes, books, dialogue and in-game cinematics. You may want to watch these in-cinematics like here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2jGwNEM1YAQ.html - that one for the legion expansion, So it should look like that: 1) 4-5 short cartoons that introduce you to the main characters: Harbingers ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oatNWSg3FlY.html 2) CGI cinematics - these are "movie-like" cinematics, mainly created for promotion ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eYNCCu0y-Is.html 3) and end it with the in-game cinematics ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2jGwNEM1YAQ.html Best of luck, you're gonna need it

But WARNING If you are planning to watch the rest of the video , As the rest of the video will be a collection of what we call (in-game cut-scenes & in-game dialogues ) & the quality in these type of stuff is not even close to the others you have watched before (The glorious CGI expansions trailers + These Artistic pre-expansions drawings) & the in-game cut-scenes are some times silly/not welldone/boring & can have in between them hours of gamplay that you may have to guess as they serve as an introduction/completion to quest in the game

So reminder, the timeline as far as the games. All "sundering, well of eternity and war of the ancients" is BEFORE world of warcraft. World of warcraft begins with the Firelord, ragnaros, and the Nefarian/onyxia (black dragonflight) plots. The expansions are about The burning crusade, "Illidana return", the lich king, (arthas), cataclysm, (deathwing), pandaria, warlords of draneor, and legion. MANY if not all of these major characters were alive and active prior to their respective expansions, as in, Arthas and illidan may have theyre own wow expansions, but they were heavily part of Warcraft 3. many of their origins were previously introduced. THIS may be relevant to pandaria, and pandaria does have an entire expansion, but the events of shaohao, were happening before the sundering, so this is a super prequel story.

outside source; The first stuff from xioahao is basically Chinas vision on the western world mostly and at some points, if u understand their history, its a tragedy. Im moving to china in 3 years bcs i got a very good job offer there, also learning mandarin and cantonese since 1~ year rn, this cinematic explains chinas vision very good with shaohao, at some lines, they even "copied" Mao Zedongs speeches. Those "SHA's" are kinda a manifestion of negative feelings, which are fightable in the game aswell in different ways. Pandaria was isolated for quite a "while" and then gots confrontated with the whole worlds stuff. This serpents "spine wall" is also a tip to Chinas great wall. At first sight of this "cartoon" i thought it would be Chen from Warcraft 3, the first pandaren we saw there in a special mission. To Wow stuff, nah, the legion invaded many times the "world" of azeroth, Argeras and his army wants "our" world soul, called azeroth. At this Point, Noone could stand out of this wars. How long did this panda guys live ? probably as long as the fish girl, when not even longer.

SOME CLARITY on post Pandaria. Little spoilery. The events of Garrosh's war crimes in pandaria, lead to a very thin truce that was more akin to a mexican standoff. THere was an immediate new warcheif chosen, a troll cheif named Voljin. The Alliances king, warned him in person to his face that enough blood had been spilled, but it would end. Only if the horde stopped trying to control and start new wars as garrosh did. So between that and the months where garrosh was held prisoner and put on trial, he managed to find a new way to wage war by going back in time with a "Time dragon" he met in prison and brought an alternate timeline version of his father and the IRON HORDE that never existed in the first place. THe big green monster guy who takes the axe to the forehead didnt die originally. he actually did make them all drink demon blood and turned them into monsters. But because garrosh when back in time and warned his father, they changed a timeline and opened another reality where Draenor wasnt destroyed and this was obviously enough for the truce between aliance and horde to end. There have been a few different "hordes" but the iron horde members are still the enemey even if you play on the horde as a character. you have orcs on the horde, killing orcs on the iron horde.

as for time line and alliance / horde war - after this expansion was "warlords of draenor" - it envolves time travel shenanigans and an alternate history on another planet. so war on azeroth didn't really continue. next was 'legion" - when the burning legion invaded azeroth and all peoples united to fight them off, destroying kil'jaden and imprisoning sargeras. after this was came "battle for azeroth" - in the wake of the legions invasion, azeroth (the world / embryonic titan) was wounded. her "blood" is a new material called azerite, which has miraculous power. fighting started over this material. in the meantime, "eye-brows" started her plan to kill everyone, for what-ever her nefarious end is. Both sides went to all-out, open war. at the end of this story arc, an uneasy peace has been reached. it would seem that in "shadowlands" we are once again away from azeroth. we don't yet know what changes are happening there. we probably won't know what happens on azeroth for another year.

The Sha are the physical manifestations of negative emotion. The six Sha you saw were Doubt, Despair, Fear, Anger, Hatred and Violence. But there is a seventh: Pride, the one vice Shaohao never managed to conquer. But we must also remember that even if these emotions are negative, many are also vital for our health when applied correctly: Doubt, as to never blindly trust. To ensure others remain true through scepticism. Despair, a cry for help when one needs it in a dark time. Fear, to avoid danger and induce survival instinct. Anger, to pursue justice and ensure that evil is not unchallenged. Hatred, I can't see a positive there. Violence, a sometimes necessary evil when others come to harm you unprovoked. And Pride, you may stand tall atop your accomplishments, but be sure to not turn it into vanity or arrogance.

I recently came across your channel, and your whole theme of "non-gamer reacts to [insert game]." I've been playing WoW for a long time, before Mists of Pandaria. You might be surprised by this, but initially, a lot of players were very disappointed with Mists. A "kung-fu panda rip-off," they called it. Understandably... similarities always spark contrived comparisons. The funny thing about this is that Mists, in hindsight, was one of the best expansion packs ever released. The content was fun, the lore was refreshing, and the gameplay was arguably the most balanced it ever was. To this day, many people wish they could go back and play Mists when it was first released, because the game was honestly never better; the best version that modern WoW has ever been.
