+Blag Owensonn actually its 1000 years if you count from the "end" and if you count where it started youd have to count from roughly 8000+ years ago. Actually Asatru is strong since 1910 in germany and austria and since 1970 in USA, Iceland etc.
This was interesting: From about 8:00 they describe how Loki's daughter is sent into an underground place called Hel that's full of torture. (sounds vaguely familiar?) Interestingly, the Norse Hel is freezing cold, not scolding hot like the Christian Hell. Wonder if the peoples of the middle East, with their hot mid-day sun, could better identify with a hot hell as punishment, while the peoples of Scandinavia could better understand a freezing Hel as punishment because of their fierce winters.
+Kjell Williams yes and no. Hel in norse mythology is a very very diverse place. it has beautiful paradise like areas, it has quite "usual" places like taverns, it has cold places, hot places, torture places, caves etc. Hel is much more.
actually he made that up, its not what it is, there is no such thing as torment in norse mythology. stop making things up also paganism is alot older than christanity so if someone stole it was the christians enough talk.
I like Norse over Greek mythology. The gods are actually heroic because they can and will be killed in Ragnarok. It's too bad we lost most of it after Christianity spread to the Nordic lands.
Corrections i had to make: 1. Mjöllnir is not destroyer, its more crusher, pulverizer, smiter. 2. Even Thor cant wield Mjölnir unless he wields his gauntlets of power and belt of strength. Actually Widar and Mani are stronger than Thor. 3. Thor is not invincible. he was defeated in the Sagas and will be defeated by Yormungandr in the end. 4. Bilskinir actually means more like "flashing light" - which could be lightning of course. 5. Widar and Magni are stronger than Thor. 6. Tyr was actually more the god of oaths than war, a role more taken by odin later on, but of valor and strength 7. Loki is no god of evil or chaos. He is a god of luck, cleverness, cunning and mischief. 8. Loki did a hell lot of good things,. Without Loki Asgard wouldnt even exist....the gods wouldnt have the their artefacts like without Loki no Mjollnir. Know another son of Loki? Sleipnir, Odins horse... 9. Odin actually likes Hel...he didnt ban her to Helheim either and she is respected by the gods
+Orkar Isber (Estar) Yormungandr also died when he was fighting Thor And I have a question isn't gungir Odin lance/spear stronger beacuse it is said Gungnir never misses a single hit? Loki is not the god of cleverness hes the god of mischief and tricks
Super Laser and cleverness and some other things ;) dont forget without Loki therw opuld be no Mjollnir, no magic sword for Freyr, no ship for the gods, no Asgard even, no Sleipnir etc.
***** I cant see a connection between the names Loki "Air" and Lucifer "Carrier of Light" also Loki is derived from proto germanic and Lucifer from Latin. Also i cant see that much of a connection between Lucifer and Loki as personalities. Lucifer did not want to obey to humans, Loki loved humans, Lucifer started a revolt in heaven creating hell, Loki actually lives in Asgard "heaven" and is best friends with quite some there. While Lucifer is definitely evil and of malign intent, Loki is really more of a nuissiance that doesnt know when to stop rather than being black hearted and while Lucifer rules the christian underworld, Loki is inprisoned there for killing someone. And while we dont know what drove Lucifer to wanting gods place we do know that the inprisonment of Lokis kids for really no reason as they did nothing bad, is kinda an excuse for him being angry with odin
***** actually he doesnt. besides we dont even know if Ragnarok was part of our ancestors beliefs or if it was created by Snorri Sturlusson in Order to justify his book in the eyes of the church after all he was monk for a part of his life and we dont have any evidence fore Ragnarok or Balder in the rest of all informations we have and Ragnarok would definitkley be important enough to mention it somewhere else than a single book...Also it contradicts some other beliefs like the rebirth theme. Also having an Indoeuropean root is not true - the jewish people belong to a different people than the indoeuropeans was it altaic...and their religion is based on an egyptian theme to begin with which clearly is different. Besides that. you cant compare figures of different indoeuropean religions i mean take Zeus and Odin they have much less in common than they should the only thing they share is being chief deity
That's Fascinating. thanks you for your input! I remember that in Dante's Inferno, the very center of Hell where Satan resided was completely frozen in thick ice. That perhaps would have been more palatable to them.
The Icelandic sagas claim Tyr was Odin's son, but earlier references to Tyr had him as King of Asgard and head of the pantheon. I always felt personally that Tyr was the original ruler of Asgard until Odin gained the knowledge of all things, then Tyr stepped aside to become their war commander. Sort of like when a general will rule until a King comes into his throne.
Its very nice to read about old gods of Scandinavia. Russia as much as other slavic countries also had old gods like :Svarog, Yarilo, Hors, Lelya, Veles and others. Fortunately, partly information saved (even after christianity was destroying it so forcely all over these countries) To know real history and culture of our roots is a very important thing, that is the way to know who we are and where we came from. In September we were celebrating "new year" in an old style, by using old calendar , its just came year 7524, while hebrews were celebrating the year 5775, by the way. So many thousands of years of our history was stolen...right now is just 2015 year officially ..heh))
Odin the wandering deity One of Odins names was "far traveled guest"... This is very interesting. Odin also known as Vodan was by Romans identified as Mercury, who was the patron god of financial gain, commerce, eloquence (and thus poetry), messages, communication (including divination), travelers, boundaries, luck, trickery and thieves; he is also the guide of souls to the underworld. In some dialects of South Slavic languages word "od" or "hod" means walk. "odi" or "hodi" means walks and "oditi" or "hoditi" means you walk, walking. The expression "odi on" or "hodi on" means he walks, he who walks. Also in South Slavic languages word "vodi, voda" means leads. "vodi on, voda on" means he leads, "voda nas, vodi nas" means leads us, leader... This corresponds perfectly with the description of Odin as wanderer and leader.... Is this just a coincidence? This opens up a big can of worms....:) You can read more here: oldeuropeanculture.blogspot.ie/2015/02/odin-wandering-deity.html
Ulysses the courier well sad ^^ Still if you are interested in vikings, the norse mythology, lifestyle, history etc it may be worth a look. If not, well, then have fun =)
Wounded I hung on a wind-swept gallows For nine long nights, Pierced by a spear, pledged to Odhinn, Offered, myself to myself The wisest know not from whence spring The roots of that ancient rood They gave me no bread, They gave me no mead, I looked down; with a loud cry I took up runes; from that tree I fell.
Sounds like Vidar got the short end of the stick, being as his whole job till Ragnarök is just to make a danged ole boot. Might as well call him Baldrick.
Hi, Where did the norse gods usually meet and what is the meeting called? This question I got for homework from school and I can't find the answer. Hope you can help me. Best Regards Aya.
The "Ancient" Africans was divided into several smaller tribes covering most parts of Africa, Most of these tribes had their own "unique" gods. The Norse mythology have its origin in the Indo-European gods, When the Indo-Europeans arrived and mixed culture with the native people of Scandinavia (The pre-Germanic people of I1 haplogroup) it gave rise to Norse mythology. The people of the old faith are known as "Vanir" and the newcomers as Aesir, As described in the sagas.
TO B SOAMES: THOR IS PRONOUNCED TOR, THE H LIKE IN BEETHOVEN IS SILENT. ALSO, YOU GAVE A GERMAN PRONUNCIATION TO HEIMDAHL. IT IS HAMEDAHL, LIKE IT 'S NOT LIFE ERICKSON, BUT LAFE ECRICKSON. SOMEONE ELSE ALSO GOT YOUR '"TIRE" PRONUNCIATION, IT IS LIKE TEAR IN ENGLISH. WISH I HAD ENJOYED MORE!
"And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." (Matthew 25:30) seems like outer space way out in deep space where it's dark and super cold and burning from starlight at the same time.
i love the fact that the gods feel so...real! the gods are no all loving and perfect with never ending power they have bad qualities, good and bad parts of their persons. thy have quarrels and arguments they have enemies and even a time limit. they can be killed and weakened and do no roll under one hand but the collective adventures of expedience of the greatest and worst. ne
Marvel: Hmm, we should make a comic about a Norse god! Which to choose - Thor, with his mighty hammer that calls lightning? Or Vidar, with his mighty boot made of leather scraps? Hmmmmmmm....
There are discrepancies in this chapter. Thor's hammer (Mjölnir ) is decsribed as crusher or grinder. You omitted his iron gloves, Járngreipr, which we learn in the Prose Edda, Thor needs to wield Mjölnir ("He cannot be without these when he grips the hammer's shaft"). Vidar slays the Fenrir after he has killed Odinn at Ragnarok. Hel lives in a hall called Eljudner and she is to house and feed those that are sent to her. The idea of Hell being a place of torture is a christian invention to intimidate it's believers into obeying the church.
Wait a minute.... In part 1 or 2 you said that it was an Eagle flapping his wings that created the waves and the tides, now you are claiming it is a snake twisting under the water....
Well, if I recall correctly, the Eagle was only sad to create strong gusts of winds that would go across the world. The serpent creates the winds and the tides, they aren't the same thing.
Though, to be fair, not much is known about Loki's motives or character. In fact he is the most researched asgardian god of all and still we haven't come to a definite conclusion about him.
anyone notice the similarity between Hodur of Norse and Hodor of Game of Thrones? i googled it and theres a theory that Hodor is Baldur, kinda interesting
Loke (Loki) wasn't evil. He was a personification chaos and disorder and fire. The killing of Balder is actually essential for the survival of humans according to the myth because if Balder had not been killed *before* Ragnarök he would not have survived that conflict. But because he was safe in Hela's domain Balder was guaranteed to survive this catastrophe and would emerge alive again after the "Twilight of the gods".
You portray Loki like an evil Satan character... that isn't right. Really, He is beyond "Good" and "Evil", yet has traits of both. This whole thing is Christianized... oh and Hail Loki!
++TricksterLove+ 'Loki might be an aspect of Satan in the symbolic as the purifying fire of Godhead. The three stages of alchemy and the three in one God of alchemical transformation. We see the same with Kalagni in the Kalacharka tantra bringing forth the Adi Buddha with the fire of purification. Rising up from the roots under the realm of hel under the roots great tree of Meru [Loki rules the same hel realm under the roots of the world tree]. And burning the entire world. Out of this chaos the new world is born and the Adi Buddha is born. This is identical to Loki's role in the Ragnork. And the reborn soul that comes from it.' Their has also been an argument that Thoth is Loki (Thoth being one of the seven sons of Satan). Following from the JOS "Thoth is a very high ranking and important Demon. He is one of the 7 sons of Satan. He is the great trickster. He is the most brilliant and intellectual of the Gods. He is very likable, extremely charismatic and friendly. He is the busiest of all of the Demons and it can be difficult to get him to appear..." So honestly the best way to find out is just asking father Satan yourself.
Thelma Lynne I recognise that some people see Satan as good. But some see Satan as bad, so I was just saying that it was like the "evil" version of Him as that is the closest thing you could get to what this video is doing to Loki. I agree that it is mostly Christians and Muslims that say Satan is bad. To me, it gets annoying when there is an evil character that everybody is scared of and scared of going to Hell. I personally don't believe in a Hell. But my beliefs are complex, because technically, I don't believe in Satan (or Loki or any other personalized God). But I still work with Them, because I can, and because it works. rose Very interesting post. I do see Loki as purifying, in a way. Because of His role in Ragnarok, and the Trickster has a way of creating change that CAN be purifying. Although I am not fond of JoS, they do have some interesting things to say. As to asking Satan, my beliefs are that everyone will get a different answer, it's just something that happens *shrugs*. To me, it is more like, looking at all the possibilities that could be. And yes, one possibility is that Loki could be Satan. But for me, I personally like to separate Loki and Satan, it is just something I like to do with all Higher Power, (except for the Roman and Greek Gods). But As I said above, I realize that Satan can be seen as good, a liberator. But I was just referring to what Satan is to a majority of people (mostly Christians and Muslims). As I see Higher Power, including Satan, to be whatever you want Him to be. If you think of Him as bad, He is bad. If you think of Him as good, He is good. That is what I feel about all Higher Power. It comes down to beliefs really. Same with Loki. If you believe He is good or bad, He is just that. But in the context of a Trickster, He is both yet beyond good and evil. That is what most, if not all Tricksters are like. It is a common theme among Them. Here is a little something from Lewis Hyde: "Trickster is at one and the same time creator and destroyer, giver and negator, he who dupes others and who is always duped himself…He knows neither good nor evil yet he is responsible for both. He possesses no values, moral or social…yet through his actions all values come into being." And I think that really suits Loki. But also, if we look at Satan as pure evil, then Loki can't be Satan, because again, He is both, yet beyond good and evil. But if you look at Satan as beyond good and evil, then He becomes a stereotypical Trickster. And that is where there is a difference. Stereotypical Tricksters such as Loki are what is described as above, so to me, personally, it would be either that I see Satan as beyond good and evil, or is evil, or good. But if I think of Satan as purely good, then He is not a stereotypical Trickster, per say, as what you usually find. Just my thoughts on the matter. Here is a good article on The Trickster and Satan: www.espacoacademico.com.br/052/52ekeyes_ing.htm Although, that article describes the differences of Tricksters and Satan, if you believe that Satan as evil. So, it makes me think, what differences do Loki and Satan have, and what do They have in common, if you see Them both as beyond good and evil? A question to think about.
Thelma Lynne Well, I haven't read the bible so I wouldn't know exactly what is said. But I agree with you, that Satan has a bad reputation when God is the one who has committed genocide, not Satan. And it is awful that in the past, there has been many killings in the name of God, and even to this day there are still killings, which shouldn't be happening in this day and age. It's just horrible. And think of the persecution people have to go through because of something an old text says. As to chosen ones, I think that is just stupid.
@manofoss "And I say to you that many will come from east and west, and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. But the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” (Matthew 8:11-12) "Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ For many are called, but few are chosen.” (Matthew 22:13-14)"
Loki was the God of Mischief, Lies and child of Chaos, not Evil. The Gods used him when "noble ways" were noneffective, yet they never considered him one of them. Their rejection and the whole thing with Thor sewing his mouth after he got him Mjolnir started his descent into revenge. Also, Balder was killed so he could come back after Ragnarok, since Helheim would be spared.
I thought blood brothers were something modern. As children in Sweden me and my friends mixed our blood in the same way. Don't know who's idea it was. But i guess it was passed down oraly seeing this. We cut ourselves in the pawn, shook hands and we were blood brothers. Interesting.
Not sure such thing should be done by kids. Being bloodbrothers are as close as you get to be real brothers. And such oaths shoulden't be taken lightly or done by kids who don't understand the importance of it.
Odin the Wanderer I still don't think forming such oath is for kids. I'll say the opposite, kids dosen't understand the importance of it. I'm a Swede(well skåning) myself, so useing that as an argument won't work.
Torvald Holst Kids are yet not bound to our retarded moral ways, so i disagree with you there. Kids are optimal for such oaths, for they can still see their thoughts. They are not clouded by other people's thoughts and opinions. What we do, reflects upon our teachings and experiences, what kids do is what they want to do.
sadly the case is due to modern hopes.some people want to worship Loki(something that never happened originally).the only explanation of Loki having god blood is that he and Odin are blood brothers.
+Ross Reid I think he was more inspired by a series of plays called: Das Rheingold all created by Richard Wagner and loosely inspired by the Saxon version of Nordic Tales.
Ross Reid Loosely, Odin was a character in the play itself. However, I should correct myself... it was not just Das Rheingold, it was an entire series of plays called: Der Ring des Nibelungen.
Which sources state that vikings attempted to convert monks? By the way, the Bloody Eagle have only been mentioned through sagas, not in history books at any points, even though it is quite nasty!
Well the first crusades (which I assume you mean) weren't a religious conflict they were actually private initiatives from European noblemen to conquer the rich land of the levant and their casius belli was the Roman Emperor Alexios Comnenus meeting with Pope Urban II, stating that he wanted an elite force of Frankish and Teutonic armoured horsemen to help him reclaim land lost from the Romans at the hand of the caliphate and Turk expansion. It's a bit more complicated than you make out.
I can't understand why the discussion happened to end up in whether the name Loke is pronounced in either way in Sweden, Norway or Island. The countries that today in included in Scandinavia all had these gods, and we pronounced the names differently, but were still the same. Somebody seems to believe that Island was THE place where these gods were to be found :) Island didn't have some kind of "patent" :) The discussion of whether ppl in England and America can pronunce the names would be the right kind of discussion. Keep it right there? ;)
+Mikael Kjell well if you look at it that way they are germanic gods with germanic names. The Asatru movement started already in the late 19th century in Austria and got popular in 1910 already - 60 years before iceland followed. technically the US have Asatru worshipped since the 50ies - longer than iceland. And iceland was 20 years earlier then the rest of scandinavia.
theres a lot up for debate here. some say that Woden took pity and gave her the land and title of Hel. Not as a punishment but as a sanctuary. just my two sense. This is also under the belief that Loki is Wodens son.
Frans .Røjkjær Christensen Stepson would mean Odin married Loki's mother. Hollywood is Jewish run, communist Chinese funded, bullcrap. You won't find much truth from that place, they have an obvious bias.
Very little similarities with Scandinavians/Norse mythology and black Africans or as the Vikings called them,Blåmän(Bluemen) because of their extreme dark skincolor that almost made them look blue. The Vikings,When first encountering these blåmän in Northern Africa saw them as evil,The color black in the Viking world was evil and thus attacked them,Chased the Africans into their caves and killed them. "They hunter the blacks, As they hunted the bear, With spear in hand, They entered their cave"
I agree. people shouldn't be killed or abused because of what they believe. The so called "Holy War" was a complete tragedy. thank God that it ended, and that not all Christians are so harmfully closed minded, careless, and naive.
Loki wasn't really evil to begin with in Norse mythology. He didn't achieve that "title" until after Christian influences. At first he was only god of mischief and chaos, and most things bad. But that was also needed got there to be balance between order and chaos. The other gods didn't see him as evil.
@satanicmoongoose Read me again. I said that he only had three children "WITH Angrboda". Loki had Sleipnir with Svadilfari. He also had Vali and Narfi with Sygin.
douchechips All Norse family trees i find say Loki had 3 children with Angrboda: Hel, Fenrir & Jormungand, aswell as 2 with Sigyn: Vali & Narfi. Gerd isnt mentioned in any of them. But then theres a Gerda, daughter of Gymir and Aurboda and wife of Freyr but i dont know if thats the same person? to confusing :(
@Axtitios Well, many believed that when they die they would go to Hel (depending who you were of course) and since the Christian missionaries had to depict the Norse mythology as being "bad" they used the word Hel to describe Satans realm. PR you know.
