I test drove a 76 and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I just got rid of my 2020 troopy to get a 76. Glad I waited for the new models because it’s certainly enough power for me. I don’t tow. I think a lot of people will be surprised about how well they drive, I certainly was.

I agree, my opinion before driving it was way different to now, I know you dont have the beautiful rumble, but with the dpf model, you really couldn't get that sound without a dpf delete, against the sound the earlier ones could get..

As a 70 series owner here in Oz there's a uniqie character landcruisers have, there old school and robust. Everyone notices the v8 thong slap as they shift through a country town. You jump inside and welcomed by its 90s era simplicity. I feel the auto 4cyl with its now modern features has just made it like every other car these days....

I hear you, the rumble in my pre dpf 79 was so good, heads turned wherever I went, the dpf model has less of a note, obviously trying to stay legal and not doing a delete, and yes now the 2.8.... Im showing my age now!

@@wayne7805 Wheel track, front axle is wider than the rear, so if you drive in sand or mud the vehicle wobbles side to side, also not great for towing, can wobble and puts excess pressure on rear tires and wheels. Friend of mind just lost a rear wheel at 110kph while towing for this very reason.

I think the only thing I will miss is the V8 grumble with an after market exhaust, a sound of a VDJ exhasut will always turn my head

I hear you and I had that in my pre dpf one, but the white one keeping the dpf in, the rumble is halved.... I can always tell the difference in sounds between the 2..

Love your work. Would be great to see some heavy towing tests. We have rescued a few people off road with Prados towing big trailers who run out of grunt. But as you pointed out this is a slight different motor and if you can turn all the traction aids off it might negate that. Also would be keen to see how much it drinks on a long trip loaded up. But if the block is 100kg lighter that’s an extra 100l of fuel you can carry.

I used to tow my 3.5t + boat with my old factory 79 series 2013 mod.. And it struggled uphill big time. I had to put it in low range to drag the boat out of the ramp.. My 200 series is no problem at all.. Toyota are really stupid and think they haven't thought this through very well at all, they should have put the 300 series 6cyl TT, in it and layed everything to rest.

I love the V6 but it's still unproven. The 2.8 has been around for nearly 10 years now. Yes, there was some DPF issues initially but since then, it's been a good motor. They want the 70 to maintain that rugged reliable feel. Don't underestimate how many of these will end up on mine sites. Mine sites don't need a TT v6

great review mate. Just take something in consideration. Portaled v8s are slow if left the engine std. I know we don't want rocketships but not sure how the 4cyl will cope with the loss. It is 20% loss on the v8s when portals are fitted.

An additional 20% loss of power? Won't the portal have an additional reduction gear? So the vehicle is more highly geared.

Agree. The bonnet and grille, and even the headlights look shit. I was trying to work out what it now resembles, and it's the Mahindra. Not a good look.

Why didn't Toyota go straight to the 550 Nm 1GD motor from the Hilux GR-S? I am guessing the drivetrain (diffs, transfer case, etc) wasn't designed for this much torque.

Torque at low speed is worse than 500Nm setting, LC70 is not GR sport, it's a pure work hourse.

Will have 285s on for next episode, the V8s feel it dont you worry about that, on a stock motor anyway, but I plan to go offroad on the 285s see what the auto is like, plus will have fuel consumption numbers...

Seeing the rpm’s rising up to 4k while accelerating to 70km/h doesn’t sit well with me… I still reckon a 6cylinder would have been the smarter choice, especially fully loaded and towing a trailer…

Most likely the same Aisin that serves D-Max, MU-X, BT-50, Prado, Fortuner, Hilux, etc. I suspect Mitsubishi as well. A very reliable, proven unit. Much better than that iffy manual box that whines louder than some here 😂

Honestly it drives nicer than the white one, still untouched though the white donk.. As far as your point as what it has to offer, the solid front axle, while it flexes like a burnt bit of toast, its a starting point for a "true" off-roader, the front locker and transfer case shifter high low range stick, these are the sort of things {for me} are the "goodies" no other vehicle off the shelf has to offer in a dual cab..

Hilux engine in Landcruiser will be to underpowered. Some Toyota dealerships have no morals. I know of some that get new stock in , put 100 kms on them then put them in their second hand car lot for over $100 000 to $120 000 depending on what model. Dogs. Toyota can keep their new garbage. I’ll keep my 2002 Landcruiser.

Landcruiser was sold from Day 1 til today, with a lazy 4-pot Mercedes-Benz OM314 Unimog engine. It went places, albeit not fast. If you need a rocket, support NASA or Musk.

Like Ford vs Holden, they're only convincing themselves. Overpriced garbage and the after sales service from Toyota is disgraceful unless you're a content provider that shows the world how bad toyota really is. For instance a new 300 comes with 1 key but don't lose it its 18 months wait for the 2nd one and don't lose the first because toyota will not prioritise you getting back on the road. Where's the +100k value? I still can't see it.
