November Trout Trifecta: Revisiting the Pequabuck

Back in Autumn of 2020, I left my fly rod at home and instead brought along my spinning gear to Connecticut's Pequabuck River. The goal for that episode was to catch a trout on spinners, something I'd incidentally never done in my life despite trout fishing for nearly two decades.
Watch that vid here if you missed it: • Fly Fisherman Uses Inl...
Long story short, I succeeded. But during that outing, I spent some time discussing my thoughts on how much more successful I may have been if I had my fly gear instead. So roughly a year later, in November 2021, I decided to fish the exact same stretch of water with the fly rod to compare and contrast my success and experiences.
Hope you folks enjoy, and thanks for watching!

That's a exceptionally clear day for the Pequabuck. I fished that since before it was stocked. It's a true success story on river recovery!! That river used to change colors daily from greens to silvers and pure black at times 30+ years ago. OZ Gedney was a electrical casting company that made outlet boxes and other electrical stuff but they'd dump their chemicals and silica cast leftovers in the river. The original study trout found their way into the Pequabuck by coming down from Wolcott's Jacklyn rod and gun club pond when they rebuilt the dam . Back then my buddy and I never saw anyone else fishing it for the first few years we fished it !! You wouldn't believe the responses we would get from other locals that would see us fishing it. They'd always assume we weren't from the area cause nobody from Bristol would've dared fished it back then remembering how bad it was. You weren't far from areas we used to catch 3 and 4 pounders out of there. Funny thing is we rarely fushed it from the side you were fishing from cause if the sun casting our shadows on the water. Great to see it is doing so well cause I haven't fished it in several years now cause pressure got so ridiculous from spin fisherman and just some really bad characters we'd run into. Make sure your car is locked up when fishing there thats about all I'll say negatively about my hometown . However theres also some great locals and really good food to be found in Bristol if ya know where to go !! My buddy and I pretty much stick to the Farmington and Housatonic river now. But do miss the ease of fishing a river of that size, and the hit and run pool fishing it allows ! It's one of those smaller rivers you can work in its entirety in a day just about. Everyone fishes it from Rt.229 and Rt.72 upwards missing out all of that water you were fishing. But like I said most people fish it from Memorial Blvd. and upriver through Rockwell park. Theres also some awesome little holes to fish above the park and in the West end of Bristol but that's where you really need to lock up and even watch your back too unfortunately. But once up into Rockwell park that chills out some. Theres a section underground in the west end that must hold some lunker just cause nobody can access the culvert it runs through for a quarter mile or so !! I'd gladly hook up on the river with you to show you some of those hidden gem pools that are on it I know of ! Just reach out to me on the comments and set up a meeting spot CtAngler ?

Thanks for watching! I don’t post new vids nearly as frequently as I think the ol’ YT algorithm would like; for me, a vid every two or three weeks is about as speedy as I get. But in the meantime, def check out the archive. I’ve got over 70 videos from all over the state.

Yet another quality video. Really love the clear , crisp and colorful footage. And , of course the beautiful trout! Really cool looking Tiger Trout also! Especially the second one . Gorgeous mottling pattern on it. Great fighters indeed! I ve never had the opportunity to cross paths with one before. So , this was really cool! And. Thanks for the usual tips and tricks that you give to us also. You make really fun and educational videos. Somehow , keep it going well into this cold winter please! Lol! Tightlines!

Thanks for watching and for the kind words! I’ve now bumped into those stocked tigers on four different rivers ever since they started stocking them again a few years ago. You’re bound to bump into one sooner or later if you hit some of the stocker streams. I tell folks that even if they may not like fishing for stockers much, it’s basically the only way to nab a tiger that doesn’t take a couple decades of playing the odds waiting for a wild one.

So glad to see you fly fishing in that spot after using spinning gear there last time

Yeah, I thought this was a neat opportunity to revisit the stream with my preferred gear. And it worked out so damn well. I actually fly fished this very section of the river yet again in December with a friend… fished the hell of it and didn’t bring a single fish to the net. It can be a finicky stream, at times.

Great video! Fished that 1st stretch last month with no luck. Last spring post stocking, I landed a bunch up just below the bridge. It's a nice little urban stream. Stay warm, before we know it we'll be abound in late winter stocking!!

Nice to see those Tiger Trout. How do you like your Lamson Liquid Reel. I just ordered a Lamson Liquid 3+ for a Redington Classic Trout 7'6" 3 wt. rod to fish small streams.
@ConnecticutAngler
@ConnecticutAngler 2 года назад
I really like the Liquid on my 5wt. So much so, in fact, that when I lost my 3wt setup late last year (left it on top of my vehicle after leaving a spot), I paired the new TFO 3wt with a Liquid, as well. Both have served me well. One thing that surprised me is how light the Liquid is… it almost sort of gives the false impression at first that it may be fragile. But in practice, it’s actually plenty durable. Good functionality and great value.

Another great video! If you keep up this kind of quality filming and deliver on a consist basis through the years, I can easily see you hitting a million subscribers in due time. With that said, I agree with you completely about stocked trout. I love fishing for them just as much as I love fishing for wild trout.

Hey thanks so much for the kind words! My upload schedule has always been sort of sparse by YT standards: I’m at around one vid every couple weeks, on average. Not sure how the YT algorithm feels about that. But I enjoy making and sharing the vids for folks that enjoy watching them, so whether or not view counts keep climbing, I’m happy to keep working on them.

I have been fishing this portion a lot recently and 2 days ago I caught a tiger that I almost mistaken for a brown because of his less defined marking in the same pool. I wonder if it was the same fish! He was pissed off lol

What are your thoughts on going out angling this January? I'm itching to get out there but fear it's too cold. But as they say, you miss 100% of shots you don't take.
@ConnecticutAngler
@ConnecticutAngler 2 года назад
I was out there on a little wild trout stream just a tad over a week ago and did very well. And I’ll certainly be out there more this January. I would say: go for it! But temper your expectations. During winter, I sometimes leave skunked from streams that I KNOW have plenty of trout. It’s just tough some days and it’s a grind, in general. But you’ll invariably have outings that make up for all the struggle. And once spring comes, you’ll be sharp and the fish will feel like they come soooo easy.
