The beginning reminds me of a line from a 50's educational film for girls: "Too many young girls are flattered by the attention of older boys, and don't realize until too late that these boys, who cannot compete in their own age group, are often not well adjusted and will demand too much in a relationship with a younger girl."

So.... this episode suggests that 1) the judicial system is soooo important that it's better to let a rapist (most likely) off the hook than to let him be killed BUT 2) It's ok to kill people who only want to avenge the little girl they love, even by means of scolding or setting them on fire and watching them burn to death with a stupid smile on your face ME = CONFUSED
@MrBottlecapBill
@MrBottlecapBill 5 лет назад
No the lesson is that when you take justice into your own hands, rather than letting impartial judges do it, lots of bad things happen and innocent people end up paying the price! Revenge is wrong as often as it's right. That's a stupid system that's never worked in the history of humanity. It leads to corruption, fewds, wars and instability. Sheesh this is the most obvious life lesson anyone can ever know. "Hey I don't like this guy.....he's doing a better job than me. I'll get my sister to say he raped her so I can kill him. It's all legal!"

That gets into even tougher territory, "justice" is a much more vague concept, it's more like saying "this is evil" or something, what is defined as evil jumps around drastically. Look at honor killings for example, in some social groups it's seen as perfectly acceptable, they would see someone committing such an act as a victim seeking divine "justice" on the evil person who besmirched their honor. Law though, it's the best we can do as a society to enforcing that society's opinion on justice

Okay, so we have here a work of fiction, not as well written as it could have been. Rapist, if taken before the law would likely have been acquitted. Rape victim begs daddy to end the killing, only to take up a gun herself and kill the rapist. Father of the rapist heads to hospital where he likely will survive and face no charges. Rape victim will likely face no charges. Both immortals live to fight another day. And poor Richie once again is portrayed as a joke. The immortals are a law unto themselves with their own "code" or rules. As I say could have been written far better.
@quach8quach907
@quach8quach907 Год назад
No you cannot write it better. And neither can I. Here's the tragedy. We cannot predict what we will do. Our heads say one thing, but our guts say another. That is the tragedy of ourselves. The daughter tells her father to stop. He won't. Duncan tells the father to stop. He won't. Now the daughter is going to kill. She's going against what she said. Her father tells her to stop, because he KNOWS, he KNOWS once blood is on your hands, you can never wash it away. But she won't stop and goes ahead with it. That's the tragedy. We cannot stop other people, and we cannot stop ourselves.

+Phelan, when I first saw the episode, I did not recognize Anthony Head at first. It was this time that I realized that he was from Buffy after I looked him up.

@@jamesaritchie1 These were supposed to be experienced soldiers who had fought on 3 continents, yet none of them even bothered to clear a room properly.

Im actually glad you commented. I can't belive its been two years since I watched this. First I do agree sometimes those with means can get off, however this is France not the U.S, different legal system. They are a bit more harsh and I dont see him getting off the hook. Second, I think you fail to grasp this tenant of Bushido. Duncan isnt giving honor or respect to the son, but to his Dad. Like I said he is a guest in his friends home, as such when attacked Ducan is compelled to defend it.

Actually the storyline is a bit weak and not very credible (even in the context of its own universe). Duncan is no fool and even though he has his own honour codex he knows that he doesnt live in 18th centuries Japan. Thats why he also refers to the justice system and courts when talking with the girls father. Some episodes are just weaker then others, speaking in terms of reason and logic of character depiction. It still was nice on the level of action and suspense never the less. If they had depicted the father of the girl as a less reasonable person and more like going on a blinde rampage letting Duncan really no other option, it would've made more sense. They had this element in the story but didnt developed it enough.
