Hunter Olsen she was getting good pop IMO off the ground. Sometimes she wasn’t fully getting into position to hit her backhand, and You can see when she moved her feet and got those shoulders and hips turned into the shot, she had good power. Definitely has talent.

Seems like more of the younger generation of women are learning how to play with spin. Andreescu might just be the first in a whole new style of play to hit the women's pro ranks soon.

I figured out that “wrist lag” is just a product of turning your body and using your whole arm, if you try to focus of wrist lag, you aren’t helping yourself in any way.

@@euroclyde How do you think tennis and specifically the forehand grip will evolve? Do you see it keeping a majority semi-western grip or is there enough incentive to use a more extreme grip despite the obvious risk of injury?

@@michaelvonhaven105 That's a good question. I think it's a comfort and personal preference at this point. The stroke has changed & become much looser and more whippy. A player has to have at least a semi-western grip to be able to use this technique. It seems the more extreme western the grip moves, the more a player gets topspin. That's good, but it comes at the price of hitting through the court faster. So, again, I think it's kind of the preference of the player and the type of game they have. That said, maybe the grip they use in early in their training drives the type of game they end up focusing on and training to play; i.e., a more severe western grip player with extra topspin might be more an all-or-nothing forehand kind of hitter like Sock, Johnson, or Ferrer as opposed to a more semi-western, more comfortable with all shots from all places like Djokovic.

Exhaling at contact (not just grunting or making some random noise) gives more power, and every player does this - but you don't hear most players because it doesn't require making an obnoxious sound. The exaggerated sounds is done to distract opponents. It's proven every time they make a tough hit at some random shot *with just as must power* and forget to do the scream.

I disagree. Audible exhaling for me especially helps with rhythm, focus and of course helps to remind yourself to breath deeply on a stressful physical point. She’s prepping for a match here so she definitely should be using her match tactics and form.

iRacer3 I’ll disagree with your disagree. I’m not discounting all of the things you mentioned but it’s psychological. This ridiculous moaning/grunting is something amateurs see pros do and emulate, that’s it. There are plenty of other sports that require hand eye coordination, significant body movement rotation, rhythm and yet tennis is the only sport where this exists. Do you hear LPGA players moan on any golf shot? You do not.

NTRP is 40 years old. UTR is 2 years old. NTRP Beginner is 1.0, World class is 7.0. But there a difference in gender of course. A 3.5 NTRP man is the same as a 4.2 NTRP woman and the same as a UTR 5. In UTR, Federer is 16.25. Serena Williams is UTR 13. Great college men are UTR 13. Good sectional boys 16’s are UTR 9-11. Supposedly UTR doesn’t take gender into consideration but junior girls are rated too high. I’m a NTRP 5.0 man, and a UTR 9, and I see 14-year old girls rated UTR 9’s but I would beat them easily. UTR is still awesome though. It’s fun to compare everyone. All of us tournament players are obsessed with improving our UTR’s!

Simondo81 100% yes. She’s prepping for a match and breathing techniques (the exhales during a full swing) are critical in very physically demanding sports. Audible breathing not only helps you oxygenate your body but helps with rhythm as well. You ever heard a pro boxer hitting a bag? The breathing exhale hissing sound you hear them make is not for show there either.

iRacer3 I disagree. Plenty of players (and many great ones at that, Justine Henin and Steffi Graf for example) never made such a noise when practising or indeed playing important matches. How is it different for players who grunt? Let’s face it, they hear and see players like Azarenka, Halep and now the upcoming players such as Sabalenka (really great game which I enjoy but the noises put me off) and they copy.
