Well that was fun. The gun was missing parts and the mystery tuning kit wasn't what I'd hoped for.
At least now the trigger is working properly though, which is nice.

No need to replace the spring Nick. Simply add a couple of slip washers ,you could do one at the front and one or two at rear this will also help with the felt recoil as a lot of it could be twisting or rather untwisting of the spring. The dieseling you experience is down to the grease you have used my friend. Molybdenum Disulphide paste is the Daddy when it comes to lubing airgun pistons Only a very light coat is needed at top and bottom of piston front and back of spring and on the washers or top hat and spring guide bearing surfaces. and a very light coat on the spring itself and I mean light. You may find that a steel top hat will help with the harsh firing you are experiencing also. But try the washers on the spring first with the Delrin set you have fitted. I know you mentioned Not Paying for a third party Tuning Kit but the likes of Tin Bum and Welsh Willy and Venom tuning kits would have put you right onto the sub 12fpe with properly finished ends to the provided springs and the cocking would be very smooth and light to boot. Great vids and good approach love them, all the best.

Hello Graham, thank you for your comment much appreciated 👍🏻. Basically yes, I messed up and should have bought a proper kit. I'm always looking for opportunities to help my subscribers save money, on this occasion it was a false economy. I'm in discussions with Arc tuning about a V-Mach kit for my HW98, reckon I will go that route with the HW95K eventually. I do have one other spring leftover from another project that I'm going to try, it is surplus to requirements so nothing to lose. Just got to get the enthusiasm back (and the time) to work on it.

I couldn't believe it, why on earth was that screw missing? 🙄 I can only assume it was removed to lighten the trigger by the same "individual" that fitted that square section spring... Oh well, it got there in the end. Very good rifle now.

What a journey, Nick. Sorry to see that this has become such a difficult project for you. Really hope that when it’s finished you will have the gun you were hoping for. Having an enthusiast local to me who’s keen to work on my rifles has been an absolute blessing and here in NZ it’s a lot easier to not have to worry about being sub 12ft/lb. my HW95 is now putting out 13.5 ft/lb (up from 11.5) with the TBT kit fitted. That’s probably the best I can hope for. it’s still as accurate as before but makes a nice “thunk” sound when it fires. A lot nicer than my factory HW77k that makes a “snap” at 16ft/lb Looking forward to the next instalment of this series! Cheers Walter

I feel your pain on this one buddy, my wife bought me a 95k. 177 cal and it wouldn't group for shit. It's been a 3 year slog but last night I sorted it. Over the years I've re crowned it, added weight to the barrel, weight to the stock, tbt kits, different springs, you name I've done it. I'm glad I persisted as I was thinking the other day that I'd just give it away as I knew know one would want to buy an over tinkered inaccurate gun, but now it shoots like my wildcat and hw100, easy 10 shot groups @ 25 meters under a 5p. Persistence is key

Thank you for the encouragement, much appreciated. I was going to get the HW95 out today and work on it. Then my wife wanted me to help her with some gardening. What was the issue with yours please? I have the feeling this one will still give me trouble so forewarned is forearmed.
@cjnev9618
@cjnev9618 Год назад
The whole issue was inconsistent grouping, I must have tried AT LEAST 15 types of pellet in various head sizes with minimal success, I knew the 177 cal was more prone to hold sensitivity and a greater muzzle flip but in the reviews I'd seen it didn't seem to be a much of an issue. So after doing everything I could to help via Internet research and basically giving up, last night I thought I'd just give it one more go. So I took it all apart, cleaned the piston, cylinder and spring then gave it a light lubing with a mix of molly grease and car motor oil ( the one for cars with over 100k on the clock), a light smear on the piston, spring, delrin guide and top hat. ( nothing inside the cylinder as that will cause dieseling). I found that over greasing will cause velocity changes with temperature, sticky in winter and looser in summer. When I prep the spring I heat and compress the ends rather than cut them unless really essential because the gun won't latch when cocking, de berr and polish the ends. The result was like night and day, the rifle now shoots many different pellets but favouring jsb exacts with 4.51 or 4.53 head size. I Believe it was the moly / motor oil mix that made the difference, moly alone seemed to stiff and klagy and caused inconsistent movement in the piston travel. I do wish i had the 22 cal as I know they are more forgiving with regards to hold sensitivity and less muzzle flip due to the light spring spring energy. I've had a tx 200 with the Tony leech light weight piston and a hw97 and I can honestly my hw 95k can now out perform them both.😂 Oh and I have swapped the weihrauch silencer for a hugger belita and that has also helped. 👍
@nickvending9688
@nickvending9688 Год назад
Must confess I really don't like the grey moly grease that comes with "tuning" kits, I've found it always goes sticky no matter what the temperature. That's why I changed to standard wheel bearing grease but I like the idea of motor oil mixed with the grease. Glad you got the rifle sorted and that it is performing well. I'm really hoping to get some time over Easter to get my HW95 sorted, it is getting me down.

My HW35 was taken and put back together again more times than I care to count. Thankfully a little more straight forward than yours. I upgraded the spring as bent, the action wouldn't cock as too long and made the mistake of cutting too much off?! Have you found the piston sleeve to have any beneficial reduction in twang and noise? I've not fitted mine yet?

Hello, thank you for your comment much appreciated 👍🏻. I've put the pieces of the HW95K back in the cupboard while I get the enthusiasm back to work on it. Cutting the spring too short, depressingly familiar. I think I did too much grinding, got carried away trying to smooth the edges. I haven't tried changing the piston sleeve, still running with the standard metal one. Can't help feeling that a non-metallic one would cut out more of the twang.

Hi Nick, have you got any experience with fitting an OX spring to a rifle, together with the Moly grease they supply? Does it take the rifle over the 12ft/lb mark, if so how much? I am asking because I am thinking of applying for a FAC just for air rifles.
@nickvending9688
@nickvending9688 6 месяцев назад
Hello Steve, thanks for your comment. The HW95 in this video came to me fitted with an OX spring and pumped full of the grease. Power was 15ftlb if I remember correctly, however the FPS spread was pretty small and cocking effort wasn't too bad. I didn't check the accuracy. I'm pretty sure the majority of aftermarket springs will take the power over the limit. Personally I wouldn't bother with a FAC rated spring air rifle, I'd go for a FAC rated PCP to make the most of the increased range and power by combining it with the inherent stability of a PCP shot from a bipod or from sticks. Hope that helps, all the best. Nick

The guide & top hat will take your gun over 12flb even with a standard spring, TBT kits are over priced & over rated they will also take your gun over the legal limit with a standard spring plus TBT guides don't fit titan springs. Even the cheap guides on eBay will take your gun over 12ftb. Excellent video by the way. Have taken my air rifles apart many times & it never goes smoothly.

Hello Terry, hope all is well. Glad you enjoyed the video. My old HW95K was running mid 10ftlb, I was expecting this one to be the same after the rebuild with say 1ftlb extra from the top hat and guide so I was surprised. Wish I'd tried leaving it cocked to see if the power came down instead of wasting a spring by cutting it down too much. I've certainly heard mixed reviews on the TBT kits, hence why I wanted to try something different. As a side note my HW98 will be getting a V-Mach kit, it will be interesting to see how that goes.

Good morning mate, I've fitted quite a few TBT guides now & if your standard spring is new it will always take it over the UK limit & you also have to remove the piston sleeve this only relates to HW models. I've never fitted a v.mark kit but they have good reviews.

You are not the first person to make that comment. I agree that the conventional wisdom is to use a different type of grease, the "airgun greases" (for want of a better description) I've tried have all turned sticky after a month or so, power and performance dropped right off. Somehow the bearing grease I use just works. Granted I probably put a bit much in, but the gun is dry compared to how my HW98 came from the factory (and remains the same to this day), Weihrauch having used a similar type of grease, and inspired me to seek alternative lubricants to try. Just one of those things really, making life interesting.
