The concept is based on comprehensible input, that is to say a language that is intelligible but just a little more advanced than the student's current ability to understand it. Through this video, you will improve both your listening and speaking skills in Occitan.

I'm British and My girlfriend is from Occitanie in France, we met in Paris where I learnt French, but then I discovered her region and Occitan really captivated me. I love your videos, keep it up. I am from Germany and have been trying to learn Occitan from the Assimil books out of linguistic curiosity and so far had the impression that it's in a situation similar to Low German in Germany, mostly in disuse and spoken by old people in rural areas. But here you are, young and fluent and not ashamed to speak it. Would you care to tell a little about the current situation of the language, where and by whom it is spoken nowadays and a little of your personal history with it? I would not be surprised if, again alike Low German, there is a renaissance movement among young people with Occitan...Thank you for the great videos!

Hi Richard and thank you for your message! I don't know the situation of Low German in Germany but according to what you say I think it is exactly the same as the Occitan's. It's actually no longer a communicative language among the youngest generations but it remains a strong marker of identity and affection so it is still alive as a second (and intimate) language. Moreover, some elder people in rural areas still use it at home so many young Occitan speakers hear the language even if it is not their native one. By the way I am preparing an FAQ video where I will talk about this more in details :)

Hello, I am catalan and I am learning Occitan through Assimil. In the method they offer the languedocien dialect, since they consider it as the most conservative and central variant. There is a phonetical difference I have appreciated respect to your pronunciation. According to Assimil, in languedocien, when there is a word that is finished by “s” and that it is followed by another word whose first consonant is neither “p”, “t” or “k”, this "s" is pronounced “i”, for instance, de qué fas dins la vida? (de ke fai din la bido?). Is this correct? Regards and thanks for your job.

Hi Oriol and thank you for your message. It's perfectly correct indeed. But as usual it depends on where you are in Languedoc. In most Lengadocian dialects this phenomenon happens with the article. For example, if you go near Montpellier you will hear "las vilas" pronounced [laj bilɔs] and not [las bilɔs] as I do. But if you go to Quercy, the change will be even more obvious since it will also affect nouns. Thus "las vilas" will become [laj bilɔj]. And it’s not the only difference you could hear between some local inherited Lengadocian and the way I speak. As a very concrete example with the letter A, you can hear that I make a clear distinction between the [a] sound when it is at the beginning or at the middle of a word (like in “can” or “galapastre”) and the [ɔ] sound when it is in final position or placed into a compound word (like in “parapluèja”). In fact this distinction doesn't necessarily occur depending on where you are. So when I say "las fedas son plan bèlas" [las fedɔs sun pla bɛlɔs] some speakers would say [lɔj fedɔj sun plɔ bɛlɔj] instead. There could also be changes between the vocabulary I use and the one you could hear if you have the chance to know some Occitan speakers. For instance I distinguish “cossí” (how) from “coma” (like) as well as “quora” (interrogative “when”) from “quand” (assertive “when”) which is not always done. This is because my videos are shot in standard Lengadocian. So you have to keep in mind that the rules I'm following are specific to this variety and might be seen as "incorrect" according to the local context. Here is why my lessons must be considered as tiny keys designed for those who want to take their first steps in Lenga d’Òc. And just as the domain of òc goes far beyond the sole Lengadocian, my courses do not claim to be neither a review of all the existing dialectal possibilities nor the only "good" and "authentic" way of speaking Lengadocian. Because it’s not :)

As far as I know, dialectization can happen for many reasons, but the main one is because of a lack of an institution that can standardize the language, which is often the case for regional languages. It can be seen as a wealth, but for a beginner, it is important to stick to a certain variety. So, I share your idea of offering these videos for a certain subdialect. I will follow them taking into account this pronunciation difference. I saw your video that shows a discussion with an Italian, French and a Catalan speaker, it would be great to do something similar with different Occitan speakers from different regions in order to see the degree of intercomprehension among them and the basic differences among dialects. Is the Nissart or Niçard more similiar to Ligurian or Occitan? The Niçard has the plural with the vowel change right? or it adds the S?

Actually it’s not an easy question since Nissart shares a lot of common points with both of them. And since I'm not a linguist I can only give you my personal opinion as a speaker. To give an answer I would say that Nissart is grammatically closer to “Standard Occitan” (based on Lengadocian) but with a pronunciation that is clearly familiar to the Gallo-Italic languages. For instance : - We kept the original Latin proparoxytones in Nissart. Just like in: “música” / “làgrema” / “pàgina” with an emphasis on the antepenultimate syllable and not on the penultimate as in Standard Occitan. - A lot of word spelling with an “ò” in Standard Occitan are actually pronounced with a diphtong in Nissart. You can hear it in words such as “puòrta” (door) / “buòn” (good) or “buòsc” (forest). - Our final “a” is always an [a] sound and never becomes an [ɔ] sound like in Standard Occitan. So basically even if the word “school” (escòla) is written the same, it is pronounced [es.kɔ.la] in Nissart and not [escɔlɔ]. - We often add a supporting [e] sound after certain consonants such as C, T or H, which gives a really Gallo-Italic tone to Nissart sometimes. We typically pronounce the word “nissart” as [ni.sar.te] and not [ni.sar] as in Standard Occitan. - And as you said, Nissart expresses some plural with a final "i". But apart from some really tiny exceptions it is a specificity of our plural feminine adjectives. For instance, the sentence “the flowers are beautiful” would be “Las flors son bèlas” in Standard Occitan but “Li flors son bèli” in Nissart. - And the final "s" are only written in classic spelling norm (the one I use) at the end of every plural nouns and masculine adjectives. But they are never pronounced. Ex. “The men are tired” is translated “Lu òmes son fatigats” but pronounced [ly ɔme suⁿ fatigate].

I'm from Venetia and to me it seems that overall it sounds more like Occitan then Ligurian, but unfortunately I don't know Western Ligurian.

Yes, and it's exactly like in French. We use the 2nd person plural. Ex. You say = Vos disètz. And just as in Spanish the pronoun is optional :)

Me diretz que s'ausís sovent e de mès en mès la fòrma pronominala de sonar, "Aquò se sona un arnés" mas cal sapier que sus les 9 diccionaris (en comptant les 3 istorics) referençats pel Congrès Permanent de la Lenga Occitana un sol (le de Laus) balha aquel usatge en ajustant tanlèu qu'es un sinonim de s'apelar. A se demandar se "se sonar" dèuria pas s'apelar una ipercorreccion ?

Enfin rencontri qualqu'un sus Internet que ditz "le" coma ieu !! (Soi de Lavaur, al limit de la zòna ont dison "lo") Nosaus tanben disèm sonar sonque pel bestial, mas en cors d'occitan es gaireben la primièra causa qu'aprenèm : "me soni Camila, e tu cossí te sonas ?" Çaquelà plan d'autors (demèst lesquals Bodon) l'utilizan dins les dialògs alara es benlèu una question d'usatge local. Ieu me.derenga pas de b'apondre a mo- vocabulari, es totjorn una riquesa de mai !

Est-ce que l'occitan ça se parle encore? Dans la vie de tous les jours? Ou est-ce qu'il y a encore seulement quelques anciens qui le parlent? Par exemple à Barcelone le catalan se parle encore beaucoup, c'est comparable?

Bonjour Sébastien. Oui l'occitan se parle encore mais ce n'est malheureusement pas du tout comparable à la situation du catalan en Espagne. Les derniers locuteurs à l'avoir entendu parlé quotidiennement sont aujourd'hui assez âgés (ce sont nos grands-parents pour la plupart donc aux alentours de 70 à 90 ans). Toutefois, il n'a pas complètement disparu mais disons qu'il s'utilise aujourd'hui davantage comme une langue seconde et intime que comme une langue à forte valeur communicationnelle. Si on ne sait pas où chercher, on peut vivre toute sa vie dans le sud de la France sans jamais entendre parler (de) la langue d'òc

Adieu ! Si es plan corrècte, notadament en Gascon, mas puèi que pòdi pas abordar totes los biaises de dire dins una vidèo pels debutants me'n teni aquí al lengadocian normalizat. Mas plan segur que i a fòrça possibilitats mai que son aitant corrèctas dins la lenga parlada

Oui et non. C'est un mot très récent dans toute les langues, donc en gros, on prend le nom de la plateforme et on y accole une terminaison cohérente avec la langue. "eur" en français, "aire" en occitan.

Et si ! Mais j'essaie d'avoir l'accent le plus "académique" possible que ce soit en languedocien (comme ici) ou en nissart (dans ma vie de tous les jours).
