THE BOAT: Scow Bow Mini-Cruiser. 14’ long (4.25M,) with a 6’ beam (1.8M,) and a draft of 2’6” (0.77M.) She features twin keels and a Ljungström rig. Every design decision is made to keep her simple, strong, and watertight.
In this episode I build and install a shelf in the cabin. I fiberglass the main bulkhead where it faces the aft deck. I also install a vent box I designed and fiberglassed the pieces for back in episode 50. Until now the vent pieces have just been stored away, waiting for the deck to be attached. I also fiberglass the underside of the starboard large deck panel in preparation for it being installed.

In a previous video i commented that i would made the vent in a way it can be inspected and cleaned. As alternative the very same construction could be done as a separate removable box hung on the wall. I understand you’ll put a net on the intake but dirt could enter in small pieces over time and stick to the inner walls.

the box can be cleaned by the opening on deck or the one in the cabin. How often do you clean your car's or your house's AC vents? It won't need to be done that often.

Great work! Just checking on the drain hole diameter size, if the hole is too small it can get blocked by the surface tension of the water. Generally a minimum 10mm diameter hole should prevent a surface tension blockage.
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 6 месяцев назад
That sounds like something that would be an issue with a closed container, but this will be vented due to the large opening and cowling at the top. Any water should flow freely through the drain.

For future interior add ones: I would do roundovers on the edges of things like your bird box so that if tossed around inside you don’t risk an impact causing a bleeding wound. Especially at head height.

My intention is to give your vent-box some serious consideration for my current project. I really like it and if I can figure out the placement it will have saved me a lot of loot! I love how Dorades look, but I'm going for function over form. I think your design is much better in that respect. Thank you. Its great to see your final decking getting done. Wow! Your progress is really impressive. Mine is not going as well, but it's winter here and thanks to climate change, it can't decide whether to snow or rain most days, and coupled with 8-10 hour work days, there's not much extra time. So I'm boat building by watching others on YT. 😅

@@ocean_capable_small_sailboat I know. I've been watching your channel since the beginning. However, I did change my handle here on YT. I'm considering doing the whole Video-documentarian thing just like you. But the filming and editing bogg me down too much. I'm good at the work, having been a boat builder and boat tech for about 15 years, but I don't have the time for the computer work. If I were already proficient at recording and editing, it may be a different story. Anyway, I can't wait for your next episode. That rear wing/flotation box is gonna be interesting!

@@rebuildingnoseas The videoing and editing skills don't take too long to get down. Important lessons were to light things up really well for the camera and to wear a microphone. Also for power tools I turn the volume way down to 1/10th in the edit. It does take up a lot of time though and I'm not even sure why I do it. There just didn't seem to be anyone else documenting a foam sailboat build and I wanted others to see it happen and to show everyone that a small sailboat can be strong and go anywhere. The money income isn't much of a factor because the money is very low.

@@ocean_capable_small_sailboat Yes, to everything you just wrote. I'm trying to decide whether to use foam or to use Marine ply for my build. Right now I'm still ripping and cutting old core and crapola but my hull is super solid glass. I've wanted one of these boats for years, so I've just got to deal with using better materials than what the manufacturer used back in the 70's. Thank the gods of boat building for epoxy and G-10. By the way, where do you buy your G-10? Amazon?
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 5 месяцев назад
I have a plastics shop nearby and I was lucky, I walked in there at the start of my project and they had a bunch of nice scrap G-10 for sale $2/lb. I bought it in 5mm and 10mm thickness. Wish I had gotten more but after a few months it was gone.

Hi Perry ... love the process. Have you seen the Air-Only Ventilatiors and Dorados ... I came across them watching Waveroaver channel.
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 6 месяцев назад
Yes, but I don't really trust them. If the boat becomes inverted, my vent's cabin opening is above the new waterline, while the deck opening is in the water. In addition my setup should provide more airflow because it will have a large cowl on top catching air and directing it into the system, where the air-only ventilator has none.

if you had a system of hoists holding your boat up when you worked on it you could rotate it any way and work on it from any angle ;)

@@ocean_capable_small_sailboatAre there open beams in the ceiling of the garage? if so can you get webbed straps over the beams? That would give you a way to hang from the ceiling without damaging the property.
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 6 месяцев назад
Sadly no. It's drywall held up by these thin steel straps so I can't even get access to studs behind the walls or ceiling. It was my first time to come across construction like that. Bummer.
@daveamies5031
@daveamies5031 6 месяцев назад
@@ocean_capable_small_sailboatThat's a pain, I guess the best thing to do is build a temporary frame that hods up some temporary beams about 1 cm below the ceiling that you can hang the bot from, luckily you built the boat light so the beams don't have to be so big 👍

Isn’t the drainage in the vent a bit too small? Looks like it could easily be clogged up and I guess it can be hard to clean if the V is filled up with seaweed and other slimy things that can get into there with oversprays.
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 6 месяцев назад
The size is fine for the purpose. You can do some cleaning down in the trap near the drain by accessing through the deck opening, or simply pushing a pipe cleaner into the drain from the aft deck.

Great video, Cpt! As usual 👍. One of the concerns I have in mind while I think about a vent system for my boat, is the possibility of being turtled in a storm and because of the sails and random circumstances that stop the boat from righting, I get stuck like that till the storm passes. With that scenario in mind, I want my vents to allow air in up side down too. I was curious to know your thoughts on this scenario? I know your boat is built to right itself, but on the ocean, nothing is a guarantee. I'm I over thinking it and making it overly complex? I should mention that my aim is to sail up around Alaska, not the normal trade routes.
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 6 месяцев назад
It would take quite a long time to run out of air. I'd shift the focus to making sure your boat is self Righting. You can add a buoyancy arch like mine will have, I'm also going to strap an empty food storage container under the arch to make sure the boat is very resistant to being in the inverted position.
@PixieSV
@PixieSV 6 месяцев назад
@@ocean_capable_small_sailboat thanks!👍 My rear "cabin"/working hole is elevated above the rest of the deck, so it should work similar to your arch. I'm also working on a quick release for the main sheet, so that in case of a knock down the sail can be released to prevent it from filling with water and causing resistance to righting. But I think you're right, and I should just keep it as simple as possible. I do like what Cpt. Yrvind is doing, but my boat isn't shaped the same as his.
