THE BOAT: Scow Bow Mini-Cruiser. 14’ long (4.25M,) with a 6’ beam (1.8M,) and a draft of 2’6” (0.77M.) She features twin keels and a Ljungström rig. Every design decision is made to keep her simple, strong, and watertight.
In this episode I begin to install the deck over the starboard coaming. It gets epoxied in place and the forward and aft ends get completely fiberglassed on. I also add some unthickened epoxy to the rope padeye in the deck-locker hatch cover, further saturating the rope that was installed last night. The edges of the hatch hole and hatch cover get a coating of epoxy brushed on.

Hats off to you for making daily episodes. I really look forward to the weekly ones so daily ones are a real treat. I know it’s not sustainable though and no one would blame you for going back to weekly episodes.

Its no mystery, You reap what You sow. Your boat is well thought out, practical, well built, and I personally would love to sail it, may not return 😅. Keep up the good work, I cannot wait to see You splash it...cheers

I’ve enjoyed your mini-episodes. I was afraid they would be like those annoying 10-15 second shorts UTube has been pushing, but your minis actually have content

I love the daily episodes but if it is easier on you I’m sure no one would mind 2 or 3 episodes a week and a bit longer. Maybe 6-8 minutes? What ever you do, see you next episode. 😀⛵️

Great little episode ... keep them coming. About that rope padeye ... I know that the design is to be sailed from the inside of the boat, but having coamings with hatch access implies that you may be out on deck occasionally (hence the need for access to the deck locker). Why epoxy coat it? Wouldn't it be easier to leave it soft and pliable? Seems like it might get in the way sticking up like that or create a trip hazard when boarding and loading up. Just a thought ... considering access to board the boat will be limited to the rear deck from port or starboard since the buoyancy arch will limit access from the rear.
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 5 месяцев назад
The rope padeye points down into the locker. It's to keep me from losing the hatch cover overboard. A rope goes from that padeye to another one in the locker.
@robertscholz4486
@robertscholz4486 5 месяцев назад
Oh, I see. I thought that you were going to have the padeye on the top of the lid as you mentioned that it was for lashing it to the boat so it would not be lost overboard in the previous episode. I thought that you meant externally lashing it to the coaming ... so i guess that you will not be able to access the storage from above deck directly then, without first releasing the padeye from below deck.@@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 5 месяцев назад
I showed the padeye I installed inside the locker for it. The hatch cover leash will be long enough I can remove the hatch cover and place it to the side to access things, but short enough that it can't leave the boat! 4 latches will secure the hatch lid in place, but you'll see all that soon in upcoming videos.

Nice progress. I also enjoy the short, daily episodes. Perhaps this is a challenge to capture more purposeful, short video segments and do less post production in the editing process.

I hope to get the boat in the water in the 2nd half of this year, then some testing to get ready to go into the sunset.

Will you have some sort of bowl below the stainless steel tube in the boat to catch any water? Although its small and the mainsheet will be a tight fit, I can imagine watch coming in especially when you haul in the main in wet weather.
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 5 месяцев назад
It's true. I don't really know the answer yet. It would be cool if there was some kind of bowl or something under that area with a drain piped to the deck locker drain's tubing. That way it could drip and not ever get onto the cabin sole.

Are you using MC foam core boards for the main construction? I have asked in the past what type of foam you are using that is epoxy stable, and all you responded with was that I would have to just look around. Everything I am finding is insulating foam board that will melt even if just using regular glue let alone epoxy, or I find sheets 30 inches by 40 inches for around $130 a sheet. You mentioned that you chose Foam core board over marine grade plywood mainly for the cost and weight, and as I am planning a prototype 20ftx7ft sailing vessel of my own design I had gaged the cost to be a few grand in materials, this was before covid, now it would cost more than a new car to build my sailboat out of lumber.
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 5 месяцев назад
I use 3/8" structural PVC foam core. If you search for that you can easily find suppliers and their costs. And yes it's expensive.

No problem. I got lucky and the job morphed into work from home post-pandemic so that's why this is possible. I could still do it if I had to go to an office but things would move way slower than their already slow pace 😉.
