Lovely and clear. I have just watched seven videos before yours, and you are the only one who explains how to make sure the sewing holes align. Thanks you for sharing
Amazing work and video. I’m picking up some water buffalo leather today and will work on a pair this weekend. FYI - I’ve made suede mukluks already and have found that it’s very helpful to count the number of stitches around the sole and space the holes on the upper just a tad bit more so that you have the same number of stitches on the sole as on the upper. This eliminates the need for any gathers in the back.
This is so cool. Thank you! Making a pair of ladies Mary Rose shoes using your patterning technique. Still deciding between a leather or wool upper. I’m quite comfortable working with wool, but new to working with leather. The some will definitely be leather though!
i am so happy i found this video. that stitching method is amazing! i have some leather laying around and i just decided today i wanted to make a bunch of shoes out of it all. i have an awl already, i just need some artificial sinew, a needle and that stitch wheel. i have a tandy leather near me so, i know i can get all of those things easily. i'm not so sure about the crepe rubber soles? but i am good at googling, i'll figure it out. =^-^=
I know a lot of you have been asking about he patterns. Well I made them my self by using extant photo references. I'll try to work with the same person that made the shoe video to make a quick video on pattern making. I'm using duct tape paper or plastic bags and a magic marker to wrap around the foot and draw the cut lines and large paper bags to transfer the patterns to. follow link for pattern "facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10203405616680168.1073741827.1204612561&type=3" If you use a thin leather you cant do a flesh stich, you would then have to stich it like you would any clothing material on a sewing machine.
I know this is an older video but it's the best I've found so far. You did a great job on this and the pattern making video. If you don't mind me asking, how much leather and what weight did you use? I'm looking to make a pair of boots that are similar in construction and I was thinking of 4-5oz for the upper and 9-10 oz for the sole. I'm also planning on making pattens to match. I need the boots first though.
that was water buffalo and about 1/4 in thick because it is so thing i use the flesh stitch. the oz you listed should work but be sure to get leather with as little stretch as possible
Beautiful shoes. Looks very difficult. Did you paste two layers of leather (as a sandwich) or is it a single piece? Because the stitch, the nedle goes right in the middle of the edge of the leather. Thanks for sharing.
Excellent video. This was very informative. I'm not sure that I understood what type of leather you used? It seems pretty thick yet very flexible. I use 2 mm cow leather which is considerably stiffer. I would like to do flesh on flesh stitches but 2 mm seems to be too thin and anything over that becomes too inflexible.
Dear Ortar, what do you use for the sole? I mean what do you glue to the bottom of completed shoes? I have been struggling with finding the right way to create a decent sole. What material do you use for the sole? Thanks!
About how many hours does it take to make a pair of these shoes? I'm trying to figure out if I have the time to make them or if I should just cough up the cash to buy a pair...
I am new to the world of leather so I want to make a "practice" pair of these with cheaper material before I get into this project. What kind of materials would you suggest for a cheap practice version of this. I want to simulate the leather work as best I can.
+C XeeDaw not sure if you got an answer, but, one way is to use less expensive leather options. Look up Brettun Village leather shop (located in Maine) and check out their clearance options. You can get some decent sized "scraps" relatively cheaply. (not dirt cheap...just "good for leather" cheap.) An even cheaper option is the $20 sides from Springfield leather available on Amazon. Plenty of leather. Expect their to be some "gotcha" - like pattern or color. But, good for experience. Good luck!
I now made myself a pair of shoes after your instructions, i am really very pleased with the result, but the sole is very slippery, is there any ting i can do about that?
Thanks for your great video. It really helped me understand the flush stitch. The shoe is absolutely beautiful. I tried to find you on facebook but couldn't, Could you link me? Also I would love to know where you got your pattern?
Where did you get the leather to make the shoes? Also what different types of leather were used? If you got the leather online can you provide links, please? Nice video!
wish you would have finished the dang boot til the very end i mean your said cross the thread here and go all around the toe to the back of the heal and start the other thread and meet it along the back or start another thread i dont know you lost me at the crossing back over part cross where and how i have never in my life thought about even making a boot til i decided to make a movie based off a D&D adventure my friends and i went on and i thought it just be fun funny and cool to mimic the quest/adventure where we can see it visually what we did at a table top in our minds then i started thinking about outfits and since there is no such thing as a outfit store that lets you buy mid-evil shoes and cloths of any realistic quality i found myself wanting. and found myself here on this very video with a half way explained shoe NOT GOOD ENOUGH BUB! need more lol i need you to do the video til its at its finish product with where you get the material can you change out the bottoms making them more grip like new age shoes or if they only have the one sole or what?? need more info please thank you!
sabastian71113 I TELL YOU WHAT. Use plastidip. It will adhere to the leather, and layering the plastidip woth sand will give you a durable, grippy surface that can be easily repaired.
I'd say about a quarter-inch, the same as the spacing between the holes for the thread, or thereabout, if you look at 12:26. The tunnel skives I've used don't generally have a marker on how far the skive is extended, so that's probably what he shot for, if it did end up being just a smidge longer.
I posted the patter to my face book page because I'm unable to post PDF's here "facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10203405616680168.1073741827.1204612561&type=3"

Octar lj Sorry. I'm from Sweden so I can't do that. But maybe there's a good Web page explaining flesh stitch? I've google but haven't found any that resembles what you did.
